Take an Active Part in Your Health Care

May 19, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Many people are reluctant to take up their doctor’s time by asking a lot of questions.  However health providers say taking an active part in your health care can help your doctor to better treat you.  Also since it is easy to forget any questions you may have, experts suggest doing your homework and preparing beforehand.

If you are new to a doctor, you should write down your medical history and bring it to your appointment.  For all of your appointments, bring a list of the medications you are taking including the dosages and strength of the medications as well as all vitamins and herbal supplements.

Also take the time to write down any questions you have for the doctor.  This way you are less likely to forget and can use your time with the doctor more efficiently.  Be sure to share any health concerns you have and remember this is not the time to be embarrassed.   Describe your symptoms clearly and let them know if you are experiencing any side effects from your medications.

If your doctor says something you do not understand, speak up and let them know so they can explain it better.  If they suggest you may have a medical condition you are unfamiliar with, ask them to write down the name. You may want to bring a family member with you to help you remember things and to write down answers to your questions.

Remember it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions.  If you have forgotten something or have further questions, you should call the office and request to speak to a nurse or leave a message for the doctor.  If a new medication or change in the dosage is causing problems, be sure to let the doctor know.

At MorningStar of Boulder, we provide transportation to medical appointments along with an array of other services to ensure your wellbeing and comfort.  Please see our website to learn more the area’s finest senior retirement living.

As one team member explains, “Radiance training is absolutely phenomenal!”  She adds, “I appreciate that MorningStar strives not only to help team members be their best at work, but in their personal lives as well.”

Investing generously in our team efforts to serve well also means paying well for the work done, which is why all employees receive competitive wages.  We also offer healthcare plans that include medical, dental, and vision, and vacation, sick time and holiday pay.  Moreover we try to respect shift preferences and to provide predictable schedules to give team members a healthy work-life balance.

May 16, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar at Jordan is committed to provide the best senior living residences in the area, which is why we work hard to create a 5-star dining experience for our residents. We understand the healing power of “breaking bread together,” and that it provides more than just nutrients but bonds us together as family and friends.  This is one of the reasons our community serves meals restaurant-style in our charming dining room.

Meals at MorningStar are prepared largely from scratch by our Executive Chef and made from the freshest homegrown or locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.  Chef welcomes residents’ feedback and adapts recipes to make sure everyone enjoys our mealtimes.

In addition we are committed to using BrainWise foods, which have been recognized as supporting brain health.  Super Foods include items such as blue and black berries and acai that contain anti-inflammatory properties and mega antioxidants.  Our delicious, nutrient-rich meals may include nuts and seeds, which are not only a great source of protein but are rich in omega-3 and Vitamin E, supplements known for fighting cognitive decline.

Other foods we serve are omega-3 rich fish and healthy, antioxidant treats made with dark chocolate.  We also offer a selection of sugar free, no sugar added, low sodium, vegetarian and low fat choices so our residents can self-manage their diets to meet any restrictions.

In our Reflections Neighborhood for memory care, mealtime is a community gathering place with team members eating right alongside our residents, and family members welcome to join us.  Furthermore, we recognize eating can be difficult for some individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia so we serve lots of finger foods as well as mechanically soft and puréed or thickened liquids.  Most importantly our easy-to-recognize balanced meals taste as good as they look.   Please visit our website to learn more about the many amenities and services offers by MorningStar at Jordan.

MorningStar at Jordan’s Website Offers Lots of Information

May 12, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar at Jordan’s website is loaded with resources and information for families in the Centennial CO area looking for senior living residences.  While we are more than happy to personally answer any questions you may have, we have found it is helpful to provide information on commonly asked questions under our “FAQ” tool bar.

Here you will get a good start on questions such as “What is an assisted living community?” We explain our assisted living community is for seniors 62 years and older who require assistance with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).  Within a residential setting, we offer families peace of mind knowing trained and compassionate care managers are there to help navigate their loved ones’ changing health conditions.  Like many assisted living communities, we offer a secure neighborhood for the memory-impaired (those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia).

Couples will learn that of course, they can move in together, and that we also offer Companion Living, which is where two people of the same sex can share a suite.  In addition we offer respite stays or trial (short-term) stays based on the availability of a fully-furnished suite.

If you are wondering how your monthly fee is determined, our FAQs explains room rates are based on the type of room, location and view as well as the level of services for assisted living residents.  This is determined after an assessment by our Wellness Director.   You will additionally find information regarding our transportation services, ratio of care staff to residents, and answers to many other questions.

Once you take a look at our website (be sure to look through our gallery of pictures), please consider setting up a tour.  It is impossible to truly assess the loving atmosphere of MorningStar at Jordan without a personal visit.

MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan represents the very best in senior living residences with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We are dedicated to providing a true home for residents amidst a beautiful, serene setting by creating a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Hobbies Help Seniors Stay Interested in Life

May 07, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Spending time doing things you enjoy can not only help you to stay more interested in life but may also be good for your health.  Many hobbies are enjoyed at any age and can help to exercise your mind or body (many do both) as well as provide social interactions.

Creative hobbies such as painting, sculpting, photography, scrapbooking, knitting and the performing arts are fun activities for seniors and provide lots of opportunity for socializing.  Another healthy hobby is caring for a pet according to A Place for Mom.  They explain that, “Pets provide a comfort system and actually produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that helps to lower levels of the stress-inducing hormone cortisol and increase the production of the feel-good hormone serotonin.”  Studies have shown that pet ownership may help lower cholesterol, fight depression and help protect against heart conditions.

Stretching exercises and yoga are also popular with seniors as they help improve flexibility and movement and build balance as well as improve blood flow to the brain, heart and circulatory system. Yoga classes are designed for many physical fitness levels such as chair yoga for those unable to get down on the floor.  Joining a walking group is another fun way to exercise and spend time with friendly faces.

At MorningStar at Jordan, we specialize in providing our residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Every day we offer a variety of fun and engaging activities that include things such as exercise and walking groups, games, flower arranging, poetry readings and much more.  Please visit our website to learn more about our loving assisted living home and while you are there, be sure to take a look at “Scenes of Elevated, Celebrated Life.”

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living home in the area.

Why Serving Seniors is So Special!

May 06, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Our company was founded on the idea that seniors are heroes, and if anyone deserves our respect, it is them.  After all they have lived through and faced many of life’s challenges and trials with tenacity and courage.  Over their lifetime, they have witnessed everything from world wars to the world-wide web and through it all have gained a unique perspective and plenty of wisdom.

When we provide the support and care an older person needs, we help them to lead fuller lives and to retain their dignity and independence in the latter stages of life.  Serving seniors is a rewarding career choice as it is something that makes a real difference in their quality of life.  In fact our loving care can help turn a senior’s difficult day into one of laughter and fun.

Working closely with the elderly also provides a more realistic view on what is most important in life.  We even get a new viewpoint at how we should look after ourselves.  Also while you support a senior’s care needs, you become a valued friend and confidant.  This includes the pleasure of hearing fascinating life stories and having them share cherished mementos and photos.

Moreover as seniors go through so much during their lifetime, they have the opportunity to learn many life lessons.  If we make the time to listen, we can learn much from the wisdom they have gained over many years.  However the biggest surprise you might find about serving seniors is it can be fun.  Unlike many of us who are way too busy with day-to-day responsibilities, a senior has the time to be a friend and to share and build new memories.

If you feel called to serve, please consider applying to one of our rewarding assisted living jobs in Denver and the surrounding area.  These are fulfilling careers that allow you to make a difference in the lives of our residents; and as we like to say at MorningStar, if you hang out with heroes, you may just become one yourself!   Please see our website for more.

At MorningStar Senior Living, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  We are committed to a foundation built upon honoring God and valuing all seniors, and are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve seniors.  If you wish to thrive personally and professionally, please visit MorningStar’s Career page for a link to rewarding assisted living jobs in Denver.

History of MorningStar Senior Living

April 30, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan is conveniently located in historic Centennial, in the south-central area of metro Denver, and offers a choice of 55 private assisted living suites on three levels.  In Our Reflections Neighborhood, we have 29 suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

Our community is a part of MorningStar Senior Living, which has over 30 communities currently open or under construction all across the country.  MorningStar began in 2003 when founder, Ken Jaeger had a dream to start a senior housing company that was defined by the human touch. He says, “I wanted to re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”  From this came our guiding principles and three mission statements our company is based on:

·         Honor God in our business practices and relationships — a commitment to strong moral values and ethics

·         Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals — a commitment to creating a community that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence

·         Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well — a commitment to hiring and retaining employees who use creative minds and compassionate hearts to serve residents

To eloquently illustrate our mission, all of our communities have a specially commissioned piece of art hanging in them.  The “Tree of Life embodies and celebrates our Mission and our Name.  We encourage you to visit our website for more information, and while you are there, fill out our online form to set up a tour of our beautiful senior living residences.

Addressing Financial and Medical Care Planning

April 30, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Especially if you are an older adult, you should have a will or trust drawn up as well as a power-of-attorney and an advanced directive.   The difference between a will and a trust is a will is a legal document that goes into effect after the person dies while a trust goes into effect as soon as it is created.  The trustor (the creator of that trust) can name others to be in charge of the trust when she or he becomes incapacitated or dies.

A living will, also known as a Health Care Directive, is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health care if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity.  The person named as the health care authority has the power to make medical decisions and sees to it that the wishes of the person is carried out.

Another legal document many seniors find is a good idea to have is a Durable Power Of Attorney (DPOA).  The document is used if the person (the principal) ever becomes mentally incapacitated and covers both financial and medical decisions.   The attorney-in-fact or agent in effect becomes a legal guardian for the disabled principal.

These types of documents should be drawn up before a person becomes incapacitated.  If someone has a diminished capacity due to Alzheimer’s or another medical condition and needs someone to handle their medical and financial decisions, a person can pursue a legal Guardianship status for them.  Legal guardianship is granted by the courts and typically continues throughout the remainder of the person’s life.  Please refer to your financial consultant or attorney for more information.

MorningStar at RidgeGate offers the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  We create a true home for residents with a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve.  Please schedule a visit to see the finest independent and assisted living Highlands Ranch CO and the surrounding area offers.

What does Assisted Living Offer?

April 25, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

You may be confused about whether assisted living is the best choice for your loved one.  While licensing requirements for assisted living communities vary by state, they generally provide care for individuals who do not require around-the-clock skilled nursing.  The National Center for Assisted Living defines assisted living as “part of a continuum of long term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”

Thus, senior retirement homes offering assisted living are ideal for seniors who are mainly independent but need help with the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) such as dressing, bathing, and other personal care tasks.  They also provide daily meals and 24/7 care and can readily accommodate residents’ changing needs and preferences.  Most offer transportation and housekeeping services, which means senior living communities are perfect for aging in place.

Another thing that many communities provide is wellness programs and activities that engage and support the residents’ intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual needs.  Furthermore, many encourage family members to get involved with the community’s activities and special events.

MorningStar of Boulder is located in the southeast part of Boulder, beautifully situated at the foot of the Rockies. We are convenient to medical facilities, shopping, churches, and restaurants as well as services in Longmont.  Our community offers 48 assisted living suites in addition to our Reflections Neighborhood that has 46 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment. To experience our community up close, contact us to schedule a visit.

MorningStar of Boulder represents the finest in senior retirement homes with our distinct mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we are honored to create a true “home” for residents.  Contact us to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care.

Your monthly fee is based on several things including the level of care you will receive (we have five levels), which was established after your evaluation with our Wellness Director.  Additionally as we offer a variety of apartments including studio, one-bedroom and two bedroom suites, your monthly rental fee is also determined on the square footage and the location and views of your suite.  Other various auxiliary medical and non-medical services are priced a la carte.

Every resident will have an around-the-clock Care Manager and access to a full-time licensed nurse.  We also offer pharmacy services and medication management by Certified Med Care Managers.  Please see our website for the full list of Care Services. We are pleased to make assisted living in Boulder better than ever by providing residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Boulder, “to honor, to serve, to invest”, sets us apart from other assisted living companies. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the best assisted living in Boulder Colorado.

Learn More About Cataract Surgery

April 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye causing blurred or tinted vision, seeing double, impaired night vision, and extra sensitivity to light.  The vision loss from cataracts happens slowly over time and cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses or with corneal refractive surgery such as Lasik.  Cataracts are typically an age-related disease, and according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “cataracts affect more than 24.4 million Americans age 40 and older. By age 75, approximately half of all Americans have cataracts.”

The surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and while cataract surgery may sound scary, most people get excellent results.  During surgery, the affected lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).  The procedure has been improved over the last several years by the use of a high-frequency ultrasound device, which has resulted in faster healing times and less complications.

Before you have the surgery, your ophthalmologist will perform tests on your eye to determine if you have any risk factors as well as what size and type of IOL will give you the best outcome.  You will also have input into the type of IOL you want to get that will depend on your needs and personal preferences.  One type of lens is an advanced presbyopia-correcting IOL that improves your reading vision without interfering with your distance vision.

The actual procedure typically takes about 15 minutes but you will be there for a couple of hours to get prepped and a small recovery period afterward.  Your doctor may have you wear an eye patch for a short time, and you should expect your vision to be distorted for at least a few days.  Other common issues include feeling as if your eye is dry and itchy but you will be advised to not scratch or rub it.   Doctors also recommend if you choose to wear glasses after surgery, you pick lenses with anti-reflective coating or photochromic lenses.

Concerned that an Assisted Living Community is Too Expensive?

April 19, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

When it becomes apparent that your parent or another senior loved one needs more care than they are getting at home, you may worry that senior retirement living at a community that offers assistance with daily activities is just too expensive.  At MorningStar of Boulder, we understand the concern but want families to know we can help direct them to often overlooked sources of funding.

However first, we want you to remember that our assisted living community offers a whole new lifestyle.  Monthly fees will include the necessities and much more including a fully equipped private suite, daily meals, and transportation services.  Additionally each suite includes Cable TV and utilities as well as an emergency call system. We also supply a full range of meaningful wellness programs and fun activities and entertainment.

One of the sources of income we discuss with potential residents and their families includes the generous “Aid & Attendance” Pension issued by the US Department of Veteran Affairs.  The monthly benefit pays for assisted living to qualified veterans, as well as their surviving spouse. We will direct you to a local resource that can help ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.

We also remind seniors to take a look at their Long-term Care insurance policies.  They can help to protect your personal assets by paying for senior care up to the amounts set forth in the policy.  To determine your LTC policy’s coverage, check the Benefits Summary section for specifics on the type of coverage, daily benefit, policy limits and elimination period.  Keep in mind premiums may be tax deductible, and benefits from tax-qualified plans are non-taxable, which makes this option even more attractive.

Another source of funding to help with assisted living costs can be to leverage your life insurance policies.  Many whole life and universal life policies build a cash reserve through interest-earning excess premiums known as the policy’s “cash value”.

Before taking advantage of any of these funding methods, please consult with a financial advisor.  MorningStar of Boulder’s team is ready to answer questions regarding pricing and availability of our beautiful assisted living and memory care community.

MorningStar of Boulder offers the very best in senior retirement living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built upon honoring God,valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself our exceptional community.

We Help Prepare You to Care for Our Most Tender Dementia Residents

April 18, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar Senior Living’s six Denver area communities offer independent and assisted living as well as memory care and are seeking the right individuals to fill a variety of roles.  Our selection process starts by looking for virtues such as kindness and character and for the type of people who will help us create a culture distinguished by benevolence, empowerment and collaboration.  We also are proud to support an environment that encourages team members to explore their special talents.

This is why one of our mission statements is to invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well.  Along with the Radiance training all new employees receive that guides the way we dispense our exceptional service, we also provide training to give team members the tools they need to serve residents suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

This is especially important if you have applied for a position in one of our Reflections Neighborhoods, which houses our memory care residents.  The training is designed to give you a deeper understanding of the disease and will help you interact more effectively with residents. Our program, “Under a Lavender Sky” helps you step into the “purple world” of memory loss, and cross the physical, emotional and relational barriers that separate our most tender residents.  You will learn how to change your communication style, understand the power of touch, and most importantly to embrace joy and hope.

Would you like to contribute to a company with a vision, mission and values that align with your own? As a company of servant-minded, purpose-driven individuals, we are committed to making a difference locally as well as throughout the world.  To learn more about our Denver area jobs, please visit our website for a list of open positions and contact information.  We offer an opportunity to feel passionate about your job and to come to work each day with a purpose.

At MorningStar Senior Living, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  We are committed to a foundation built upon honoring God and valuing all seniors, and are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve seniors.  For a rewarding career, visit MorningStar’s Career page for information on Assisted Living Jobs in Denver.
