Do You Have a Calling to Serve?

April 25, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Are you someone who grew up enjoying a special relationship with a grandparent or another beloved senior?  Many of us are lucky to have had the opportunity to be influenced and guided by senior roles models.  Others of us have had the privilege of forming special bonds as adults while working with or by serving our cherished seniors.

These loving relationships remain in our hearts and minds and leave us with a warm feeling. Listen to one of our Executive Directors describe the joy of serving seniors, “The life lessons seniors have taught me over the years have been priceless, fueling my passion to return service from the heart to those who have made so much possible for us to enjoy today. The first seniors I ever loved were my grandparents, Gladstone and Violet, who inculcated in me the values of integrity, hard work and humility. The MorningStar core values are the core values of life.”

For inspiring stories of the beautiful relationships that spring up between our residents and staff members, please watch our video collection of Live Twice the Story.  These short clips illustrate the bonds that form between our “MorningStar family” and help us recognize we are not just living out our own story.  Rather we see our work at MorningStar as part of a bigger story with a magnified purpose; and recognize our reward is to hear cherished life stories and to learn from wisdom that has been gained through lives well lived.

Presently we seek individuals with a felt calling to serve to fill a variety of open assisted living jobs in Denver’s Arvada, Centennial, Lone Tree, Parker, Wheat Ridge, and Littleton communities.  While our positions require men and women with diverse skills, education and backgrounds, all of our roles pay competitive wages, comprehensive benefits and offer numerous personal rewards! Please know that we are safely hiring new team members during the coronavirus outbreak, and once you are hired, we are taking every precaution to keep you safe at work.

At MorningStar Senior Living, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  We are committed to a foundation built upon honoring God and valuing all seniors, and are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve seniors.  For a rewarding career opportunity, visit MorningStar’s Career page for information on assisted living jobs in Denver, CO.

Improve Your Mental Fitness

April 21, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

More and more research suggests it is just as important for seniors to stay mentally fit as it is to stay physically fit, and may actually help to keep older adults’ brains healthier.  Seniors who engage in meaningful activities also report they feel healthier and happier.

The National Institute on Aging says these types of activities may protect the brain by establishing a cognitive reserve.  They explain “they may help the brain become more adaptable in some mental functions, so it can compensate for age–related brain changes and health conditions that affect the brain.”

One study called the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) Trial, had good results in improving seniors’ mental skills in the areas they were trained in.  The study involved healthy adults age 65 years or older who participated in 10 sessions of memory training, reasoning training, or processing–speed training.  The most surprising result of the study is that ten years later most of the participants’ improvements were still noticeable.

Brain activities can include reading a book, making a puzzle, doing crosswords or playing trivia and other types of challenging games.  Research also suggests that memory improvement is not only accomplished by targeted brain games or memory drills, but can come from undertaking a new skill or hobby.  Learning to play an instrument or a foreign language are also great, brain healthy activities.

Committed to be one of the best assisted living facilities in Centennial, CO, MorningStar at Jordan provides residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Every day we offer a variety of fun and engaging activities that include things such as exercise classes, word games, craft classes, card and board games, spelling bees, and a writing club.  Please visit our website to learn more about our loving community and while you are there, be sure to take a look at “More Scenes of Elevated, Celebrated Life.”

Challenging Activities are Good for Your Brain

April 19, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Several studies indicate life-long learning is good for seniors’ brain health and starting a new hobby or learning a skill late in life can help to boost a person’s memory.  In one study from the University of Texas at Dallas, researchers found that older adults “who took on a new mentally challenging hobby saw a lasting increase in their memory skills.”  They theorize that when seniors mentally challenge themselves with new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to operate a computer, or being taught to quilt, networks within the brain are being strengthened.

Neurologists in another study from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland discovered that a lifelong pursuit of mentally challenging activities may actually help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.  Their findings suggest that older adults who frequently read, played mentally challenging games like chess, or engaged in other intellectually stimulating activities are less likely to have Alzheimer’s, which impacts millions of Americans.

Other research out of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School appear to support these findings.  Their study relied on interviews as well as brain scans of participants, and findings indicate that seniors who have had a higher level of intellectual stimulation throughout the course of their lives, showed a marked delay in the onset of memory-related problems and other Alzheimer’s type symptoms.

At MorningStar, we believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless, and feel it is our privilege to provide seniors an environment where they can be productive and engaged each day.  Our Life Enrichment Team presents creative ways to stay active and enhance health and wellness, stimulate the brain and encourage connection.  Please visit our website to learn more about one of the top assisted living facilities in Boulder.

In the Beginning

April 16, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar Senior Living’s Founder and CEO, Ken Jaeger, first began forming the idea of starting a company from a desire to create senior living that was defined by the human touch.  He says his intention was to “re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”  This simple but profound concept has driven the overwhelming success of our MorningStar brand.  Now sixteen years later, MorningStar continues to add communities across the Western U.S., including MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan in Centennial, CO.

At MorningStar at Jordan, our goal is to create a true home for our residents - one that feels like a family.  To help us achieve this, our dedicated team strives to live up to our unique mission statement, which includes honoring God in all of our business practices and relationships and valuing all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals.  The last part of our mission statement is to invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well, as we know our brand demands committed individuals who will use creative minds and compassionate hearts to serve our residents.

We also aspire to and nurture our core values of Love, Respect, Honesty, Fairness, Goodness, and Kindness to help us build our MorningStar family.  As one resident’s family member described MorningStar: “what makes me happy with how my grandparents lived out their time at MorningStar is the respect, dignity, and help that they got from a great staff.”

We Need Kindness Now More than Ever!

April 12, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

It is important that we all try to give back in whatever way we can to help our neighbors, our communities, our country, and our world to move beyond this terrible pandemic.  One of our best tools is to practice a little kindness both to ourselves and to one another.  At the Denver area MorningStar senior living communities, we seek individuals with Great Hearts to serve in our beautiful communities.

We need people who understand the amazing power that one small act of kindness has to grow and flourish.  For at its core, kindness is about empathy and finding ways to enrich the lives of others, and by doing so, we the giver enjoy the benefits as our spirits are nourished and we focus on those we share it with.

There is even anecdotal evidence that suggests kindness has “profound effects on our own mental & physiological health, helping us to become happier and compassionate towards others.” In addition, experts explain that being kind to others may help boost the immune system, slow down aging, elevate self-esteem and improve blood pressure.

The joy you will find working at one of our assisted living jobs at Denver area’s MorningStar of Arvada in Arvada; MorningStar at Jordan in Centennial; MorningStar of Littleton in Littleton; MorningStar at RidgeGate in Lone Tree; MorningStar of Wheat Ridge in Wheat Ridge; and Parker Senior Living by MorningStar in Parker are limitless.  You will discover a workplace dedicated to building warm, genuine connections with fellow team members and those we serve, our residents.  In fact our loving communities’ goal is to cast a new light on senior living and to be a beacon of decency, good manners and polite conversations.

MorningStar at Jordan Offers Medication Management

April 10, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Many families may be unaware of the extensive care services that assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Jordan offer to residents.  One term that is useful to know is Activities of Daily Living (ADL), which describes the various care services found in an assisted living and memory care facility.  These activities typically include dressing, bathing, eating, toileting, etc.  At MorningStar a resident’s care level is determined after a thorough evaluation with our Wellness Director.

One of the care services we offer is medication management by a Certified Med Care Manager.  The cost for this service is factored into a resident’s level of care and is part of their monthly fee.  Our service includes both the ordering and supervised administration of the medications, and we have two price points based on the number and type of prescriptions involved.

For many elderly people, medication management is a very important service.  Statistics show that “many hospitalizations are due to just a few drugs that should be monitored carefully to prevent problems. Blood thinners (such as warfarin), diabetes medications (such as insulin), seizure medications (such as phenytoin), and opioid analgesics are some examples of these medications.”

Forgetting to take prescribed medications, not taking the right dosage or not finishing prescriptions is common among seniors and can lead to serious medical problems.  Knowing a certified MorningStar medication manager is in charge of your loved one’s medications can provide a family with peace of mind.  Dominick Bailey, a clinical pharmacist specializing in geriatric care reminds his elderly patients that, “Medications only work if you take them.”  He adds, “If they sit on the shelf, they don’t work.”

If you would like to know more about the best assisted living and memory care in Centennial, CO, please visit our website for contact information regarding pricing and availability or to set up a tour.   We are conveniently located on Arapahoe and Jordan Roads, in the south-central area of metro Denver.  With 55 assisted living suites and 29 secure suites devoted to memory care, we offer a range of floorplans including spacious studio and one-and two-bedroom apartments.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Jordan, “to honor, to serve, to invest”, sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself our exceptional assisted living and memory care facility.

Improve Your Balance to Help Prevent Falls

March 29, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

It is important for older adults to take precautions to prevent falls as the resulting injuries tend to be more serious such as a broken hip or head trauma.  However doctors also point out that being sedentary is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is important to keep moving.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that one out of every four Americans aged 65 and older falls every year but say there are things that seniors can do to help prevent a fall.  The trick is to find a way to safely move about while taking into account any balance issues you may experience.

As many adults are less active as they get older, it can exacerbate the physical effects of aging. Experts say, “Failure to engage in even mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”  Other issues that can lead to falls include poor eyesight and taking medications with side-effects such as drowsiness, dizziness and low blood pressure. Chronic health conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis as well as problems with numbness in the feet can also increase the risk of falls.

The good news is there are a variety of easy-to-do exercises that can help seniors improve their balance. Even if you rely on a cane or other assistive devices, balance exercises can improve your mobility.  While many assisted living facilities such as MorningStar of Boulder offer a variety of exercise options, there are also some that can be done throughout the day right at home. One example is to try standing on one foot while close to the kitchen counter.  If you need, keep your hand on the counter for support and as you feel more confident try taking your hand off. Another thing you can do is to try and get up from a chair without using your arms.

MorningStar of Boulder represents the very best in assisted living facilities with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We are dedicated to providing a true home for residents amidst a beautiful, serene setting by creating a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Please contact us to set up a tour to see firsthand our exceptional community.

Study Shows How to Age Well

March 27, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

The longest, most comprehensive study ever done on aging by the Harvard Study of Adult Development has turned up some unexpected results.  The study, which began in the 1930s, examined more than 800 men and women from adolescence into old age. The purpose of the research is to find clues to the participants’ behaviors that translate into happy and healthy longevity.

George Vaillant, MD, director of the Harvard study and senior physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, states that, "I had expected that the longevity of your parents, the quality of your childhood, and your cholesterol levels would be very influential.  So I was very surprised that these particular variables weren't more important than they were."

Another commonly held belief regarding aging well has typically included avoiding stress.  However, the results from the study indicate that stressful events did not predict future health and that some people who have had a lot of stress have aged quite well despite it.  The important thing seems to be how well you deal with the stress.

The Harvard study also found that genetics may not play as big of a role in how well we age as do things such as not smoking or overeating, maintaining a healthy body weight, and developing good coping skills.  Exercising, keeping good social connections, and being a life-long learner are additionally all precursors to a healthy longevity. If fact, the overriding conclusion of the study appears to be that we have more control over our longevity that we may have thought in the past.

Learn More About Assisted Living

March 26, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

If you are new to the concept of assisted living, and are unsure of the difference between other senior living options including independent living, MorningStar at Jordan is here to help.   Not only is our staff happy to answer any questions but our extensive website helps educate potential families on what our community is all about and provides information on our company’s history, vision, and mission.

To start with, assisted living offers various levels of support with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing and other support services including meals, transportation and wellness activities in a residential setting.  Independent living is for seniors who enjoy the benefits offered by community living including predictable budgeting, companionship, and activities; but do not require assistance with personal care.  A nursing home is unlike assisted living as it is designed for people requiring around-the-clock nursing care.

When you visit our website, be sure to check out our FAQs found under our “Family Resources” tab.  We supply answers to many of the questions you probably have as well as a little background regarding the MorningStar Senior Living Company.  You will also find important information on how we determine your loved one’s level of care and reassurances regarding our commitment to regularly re-evaluate care plans to keep up with changing needs.

Moreover, we can help residents find a primary care doctor or specialty health care providers such as Occupational Therapists or Physical Therapists. When needed, we provide transportation to doctor appointments with vehicles that accommodate walkers or wheelchairs.

Our FAQs gives a quick overview of the training our Care Managers receive, which includes an orientation program (and a three-day shadow), Radiance culture training, 8-hour dementia training, and ongoing training in specific care needs.  Our Medication Managers are trained Qualified Medication Administration Persons (QMAP).

This is just a sampling of what you will learn on our website, but we would also love to hear from you personally as well as help you set up a tour.  For those families struggling with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, we are also an experienced, compassionate memory care facility.

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living and memory care facility in the area.

Veteran’s Aid & Attendance Benefit for Assisted Living

March 24, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar of Boulder is pleased to provide families with ideas for additional financial solutions beyond traditional retirement savings and investment income to help pay for assisted living or memory care.  On our website, you will find extensive information on several under-utilized financial benefits and resources including a full explanation of the generous “Aid & Attendance” pension from the US Department of Veteran Affairs.

Aid & Attendance is a monthly benefit payment available to certain wartime veterans and their survivors who qualify for financial need and have a doctor’s order for regular assistance with daily living activities.  To be eligible, the vet must have served for at least 90 days of active duty with at least one of those days spent serving during a period of a foreign war. Furthermore, the vet cannot have been dishonorably discharged.  The benefit does not require the vet to have served overseas, seen combat or retired from the military. Surviving spouses of the vet are also eligible for the Aid & Attendance pension if they were married to the vet at the time of their death and have not remarried.

When we find out that a vet or the family of a vet is interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to local resources that can help to ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.  In every state including Arizona, there is a Department of Military/Veteran Affairs staffed with Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) who will help you complete the 41-page Aid & Attendance application free of charge. The approval process typically takes 3 to 4 months.

Throughout our many MorningStar communities, we are privileged to have veterans from all five branches of military service call us home.  Please visit our website and take a look at our Family Resources information regarding ways to finance assisted living facilities including “Aid & Attendance” pension benefits for Veterans.

Is Your Parent Safe Living Alone?

March 21, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Many older adults cling to the idea of living in their own home and stubbornly refuse to accept the fact that their declining medical conditions may be putting their very safety at risk in their present living situation.  This is when family members need to step in and help make some decisions.

In the best scenario, we typically want to make changes in things as important as our living situation with careful thought, but unfortunately, many older adults do not have such plans in place.  This reluctance to plan ahead means lots of families are unaware of today’s various senior living options, which include assisted living facilities, independent living, skilled nursing facilities, family group homes, memory care, and continuing care communities.

As you sort through the best care options for your parent, start by honestly assessing their medical conditions, their mobility, and care requirements.  In addition, experts say to try and determine what the future holds for your loved one as you do not want to get them settled into a home and quickly realize it is not equipped to provide the care they now need.

One senior living option is assisted living, which is designed to provide your parent help with their ADLs (activities of daily living) in order to allow them to live as independently as possible.  Most assisted living communities have tiered levels of care, which means as your parent’s needs increase the community will be able to address them.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan, located in Centennial CO, we work hard to create a true “home” for our residents.  We define health and well-being holistically and offer services and programming that supports the whole person: body, mind and spirit. Please visit our website for information regarding our various care services and amenities as well as pricing and availability.
