Learn More About Cataract Surgery

April 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye causing blurred or tinted vision, seeing double, impaired night vision, and extra sensitivity to light.  The vision loss from cataracts happens slowly over time and cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses or with corneal refractive surgery such as Lasik.  Cataracts are typically an age-related disease, and according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “cataracts affect more than 24.4 million Americans age 40 and older. By age 75, approximately half of all Americans have cataracts.”

The surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and while cataract surgery may sound scary, most people get excellent results.  During surgery, the affected lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).  The procedure has been improved over the last several years by the use of a high-frequency ultrasound device, which has resulted in faster healing times and less complications.

Before you have the surgery, your ophthalmologist will perform tests on your eye to determine if you have any risk factors as well as what size and type of IOL will give you the best outcome.  You will also have input into the type of IOL you want to get that will depend on your needs and personal preferences.  One type of lens is an advanced presbyopia-correcting IOL that improves your reading vision without interfering with your distance vision.

The actual procedure typically takes about 15 minutes but you will be there for a couple of hours to get prepped and a small recovery period afterward.  Your doctor may have you wear an eye patch for a short time, and you should expect your vision to be distorted for at least a few days.  Other common issues include feeling as if your eye is dry and itchy but you will be advised to not scratch or rub it.   Doctors also recommend if you choose to wear glasses after surgery, you pick lenses with anti-reflective coating or photochromic lenses.

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living home in the area.

Concerned that an Assisted Living Community is Too Expensive?

April 19, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

When it becomes apparent that your parent or another senior loved one needs more care than they are getting at home, you may worry that senior retirement living at a community that offers assistance with daily activities is just too expensive.  At MorningStar of Boulder, we understand the concern but want families to know we can help direct them to often overlooked sources of funding.

However first, we want you to remember that our assisted living community offers a whole new lifestyle.  Monthly fees will include the necessities and much more including a fully equipped private suite, daily meals, and transportation services.  Additionally each suite includes Cable TV and utilities as well as an emergency call system. We also supply a full range of meaningful wellness programs and fun activities and entertainment.

One of the sources of income we discuss with potential residents and their families includes the generous “Aid & Attendance” Pension issued by the US Department of Veteran Affairs.  The monthly benefit pays for assisted living to qualified veterans, as well as their surviving spouse. We will direct you to a local resource that can help ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.

We also remind seniors to take a look at their Long-term Care insurance policies.  They can help to protect your personal assets by paying for senior care up to the amounts set forth in the policy.  To determine your LTC policy’s coverage, check the Benefits Summary section for specifics on the type of coverage, daily benefit, policy limits and elimination period.  Keep in mind premiums may be tax deductible, and benefits from tax-qualified plans are non-taxable, which makes this option even more attractive.

Another source of funding to help with assisted living costs can be to leverage your life insurance policies.  Many whole life and universal life policies build a cash reserve through interest-earning excess premiums known as the policy’s “cash value”.

Before taking advantage of any of these funding methods, please consult with a financial advisor.  MorningStar of Boulder’s team is ready to answer questions regarding pricing and availability of our beautiful assisted living and memory care community.

MorningStar of Boulder offers the very best in senior retirement living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built upon honoring God,valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself our exceptional community.

We Help Prepare You to Care for Our Most Tender Dementia Residents

April 18, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar Senior Living’s six Denver area communities offer independent and assisted living as well as memory care and are seeking the right individuals to fill a variety of roles.  Our selection process starts by looking for virtues such as kindness and character and for the type of people who will help us create a culture distinguished by benevolence, empowerment and collaboration.  We also are proud to support an environment that encourages team members to explore their special talents.

This is why one of our mission statements is to invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well.  Along with the Radiance training all new employees receive that guides the way we dispense our exceptional service, we also provide training to give team members the tools they need to serve residents suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

This is especially important if you have applied for a position in one of our Reflections Neighborhoods, which houses our memory care residents.  The training is designed to give you a deeper understanding of the disease and will help you interact more effectively with residents. Our program, “Under a Lavender Sky” helps you step into the “purple world” of memory loss, and cross the physical, emotional and relational barriers that separate our most tender residents.  You will learn how to change your communication style, understand the power of touch, and most importantly to embrace joy and hope.

Would you like to contribute to a company with a vision, mission and values that align with your own? What to Ask When Considering an Assisted Living Community

April 13, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

If you are trying to find the best assisted living community for yourself or a loved one, there are a few things you should consider to help guide your decision including scheduling a personal tour of the community.  While many senior living communities’ websites are filled with lots of pictures and information, there is nothing like a firsthand look.

During your tour (or in a follow-up call), be prepared to ask the right questions.  As A Place for Mom recommends, you will want to know about the staff-to-resident ratio and the type of training the staff has and/or receives as an employee.  You will also want to know about the assessment process done prior to the individual moving into the community as this step ensures a person gets the level of care they need for their safety and comfort.  In addition, ask what procedures are in place to stay abreast of any changes in your or your loved one’s health.

Be sure to ask if the community has a nurse on staff and if they are on call 24/7?  You will also want to know how your monthly fee will be determined and the type of apartments available.  Are there additional move-in fees or contractual obligations when you move out, and if there is a waiting list, what is the typical waiting period?

MorningStar at RidgeGate’s goal is to provide the best independent and assisted living Highlands Ranch CO and the surrounding area has to offer, and we feel privileged to provide residents with an unparalleled lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  MorningStar’s website has a dedicated FAQs section that is sure to answer a lot of your questions about MorningStar at RidgeGate.  Or feel free to contact us through email or a phone call.  Furthermore, we strongly encourage anyone interested in our community to set up a tour. We look forward to meeting you.

MorningStar at RidgeGate offers the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  We create a true home for residents with a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve.  Please schedule a visit to see the finest independent and assisted living Highlands Ranch CO and the surrounding area offers.

Touring an Assisted Living Community

April 12, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Just as MorningStar at Jordan encourages anyone interested in our community to schedule a tour, so do most other assisted living communities.   This is because you cannot really get an idea of what a community looks like or feels like without seeing it in person.

In addition to wanting your loved one to be happy in their new assisted living home, your priorities most likely include finding a community that is well run, clean, and within your price range.   Experts recommend your first step should be to do some research over the Internet and on the phone.  Narrowing down your choices includes considering things such as how convenient will it be for the family to visit and is it located close to a pharmacy, medical facilities and shopping.  Furthermore, find out if the community is accepting new residents, and if not, you may want to go on their waiting list.

Senior support networks like Caring.com has a great checklist (it is even printable) of tips to consider for when touring an assisted living community.  To start with, they say you should always listen to your gut instincts.   From the moment you walk through the door, do you get a good feeling?  Regardless of how beautifully decorated, does it feel welcoming and have a home-like atmosphere?  If they offer the service, eat lunch with the residents as it will help to give you a more complete picture of the community.

At MorningStar at Jordan, we encourage families to come and visit as we are proud of each and every aspect of our community.  Not only is our community beautifully decorated and designed for residents’ every comfort and need, but we have a staff that is committed to serving seniors and come to work each day with a smile on their face.  Please visit our website to learn more.

What Does an Assisted Living Community Offer?

March 31, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Many families with elderly parents or loved ones are uncertain just what to expect from an assisted living community.  While each community has its own personality and differs from the type of services and amenities offered, typically “assisted living” is a long-term care option that provides personal care support services such as bathing, dressing, meals, medication management, and transportation.  According to aPlaceforMom.com, assisted living may offer “a more cost effective, residential approach to delivering many of the same services either by employing home health agencies or personal care staff.”

MorningStar at Jordan offers 55 private assisted living suites in a variety of configurations as well as provides residents with a whole host of resort-style amenities and services.  Upon joining our community, the resident and their family meets with our Wellness Director for a thorough assessment of their needs that is used to create a customized care plan.

Furthermore, regardless of the level of care you receive, all residents have an onsite 24/7 Care Manager that is ready to ensure their safety and comfort.  We also offer a licensed nurse onsite 5 days a week and on call 24/7; medication management by certified med care managers; periodic care plan reviews; and scheduled health & wellness evaluations.

As MorningStar defines health and well-being holistically, we are proud to offer a range of services and programs that support the whole person: body, mind and spirit.  We consider wellness to be a joint effort between our Life Enrichment and Wellness programs, which play a critical role in making MorningStar the destination for successful aging.

Please visit our website for more information about the top assisted living home in the Centennial CO area.  In addition to our 55 assisted living suites, we offer 29 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

New & Familiar Faces Have Joined Our Leadership

March 31, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Over the last several months, MorningStar of Boulder has had the honor to welcome some new as well as familiar faces to our leadership team. These loving, dedicated individuals are an important part of our community as they help to inspire and guide our team in delivering exceptional senior retirement living for all of our residents.

We are pleased to welcome back Tracie Roberts who rejoined our team in February as our Executive Director. Tracie has been with MorningStar for over eleven years and each community and position she has served in has been the better for it. Tracie relates how she and her five siblings grew up in a home right next door to her great-grandparents, Raymond and Dorothy. She adds theirs was a “home of comfort and safety…and a place to be spoiled rotten!” Her family also lived close to grandparents, Ed and Ginny, and Tracie acquired her caregiving skill by helping care for Ed through a cancer diagnosis. Now more than a decade later as a senior caregiver has made Tracie feel even more committed to her chosen career and explains, that, “Seniors amaze me. Even on their hardest days, our residents offer endearing hugs and heartfelt thanks.”

Erin Pfarr serves as our Wellness Director and feels that nothing is more rewarding than serving those who are the most deserving. She says seniors give us the wisdom of their years and teach us how to appreciate and celebrate life. Erin was initially drawn to the history and mission of MorningStar and recognized it was the ideal place to serve seniors. And speaking of coincidences, Erin’s grandparents lived on a mountain in Oregon where they had 40 acres they called “Morning Star.”

Rounding out the team is our Director of Community Relations, Jennifer Ptacek. Jennifer was lucky enough to grow up with all four grandparents and they were the first seniors she ever loved. They had a significant impact on her life and contributed to the person she is today. She says seniors have taught her to live each day to the fullest and to take nothing for granted.

Along with our extraordinary leadership, we are blessed to have an entire team that feels privileged to serve seniors. Our community offers both assisted living and memory care and we invite you to visit our website for more information. Caring for the needs of seniors is what MorningStar of Boulder does best.

As one of the nation’s finest assisted living companies, MorningStar of Boulder represents the best in senior living with a distinct mission statement - “to honor, to value, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Do a Spring Tune-up for All Your Health Needs

March 28, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Now that spring is just around the corner, we are all looking forward to milder weather. If you have felt like you have been cooped up this winter, now is time to start thinking about getting out and taking care of your annual health needs.

Remember just as we schedule tune-ups for our automobiles, it is also important to maintain our bodies to keep them running as smoothly as possible.  For example, if it has been more than a year since your last eye exam, you should schedule one now. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends adults 65 years and older have a complete eye exam every year or two to check for age-related eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataract and other eye conditions.

If you feel like you are having difficulty following conversations, especially in a crowd of people, you should have your hearing tested. We encourage you to sign up to attend our monthly Hearing Clinic. In addition don’t forget about your teeth as that can lead to bigger problems, and remember even older adults can still get cavities. It is Never Too Late to Improve the Health of Your Bones

March 26, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

It is estimated that approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and another 44 million Americans have low bone mass, which puts them at an increased risk for osteoporosis. People may be unaware they have the disease until they fall and fracture a bone as osteoporosis does not exhibit any clear signs or symptoms. While the disease affects both men and women, older white and Asian women (especially those post-menopausal) are at the highest risk. Studies show one in every two women and up to one in four men age 50 years or older will break a done due to disease. Furthermore injuries can lead to serious complications and twenty percent of seniors who break a hip die within one year of surgery. Many others require long-term care.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation says it is never too late to take steps to protect our bones and prevent fractures (broken bones), and urge us to take action by adopting health habits that build and protect our bones. One step is to eat a well-balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables as well as calcium and vitamin D. Exercising regularly is another important component and should include weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises. Also avoid smoking and limit alcohol to 2-3 drinks per day.

An early diagnosis can also make a difference as osteoporosis is a disease that can be treated as well as prevented. A safe and painless procedure called a bone mineral density (BMD) test uses a special machine to measure bone density. It tells you the amount of bone mineral you have in a certain area of bone and can be done on different bones in your body such as hip, spine, forearm, etc. In addition common health conditions including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and multiple sclerosis, breast and prostate cancer, and diabetes can increase you chance of getting osteoporosis.

As one of the area’s finest senior retirement homes, MorningStar of Boulder offers the services and programming that support the whole person: body, mind and spirit. Please visit our website to learn more about our loving and compassionate community. Also ask about our limited time offer of $1,000 savings per month (up to six months) for memory care residents.

Oral Care is Important for Seniors

March 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Good oral hygiene is an essential part of maintaining one’s overall health and quality of life.  Even though seniors are living longer, it does not mean that they cannot keep their natural teeth.   Brushing at least twice daily, flossing, and regular visits to your dentist can prevent problems from occurring.

Seniors are at a greater risk for developing periodontal disease which is the inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria or plaque that forms on the teeth.  It is very common and one of the leading causes of tooth loss.  Signs of periodontal disease are bleeding gums, receding gums, bad breath, and shifting or loose teeth.  There is evidence to suggest that periodontal disease is linked to heart disease, stroke, and perhaps increases the complications of diabetes.

Dry mouth is another problem faced by some seniors. It can be caused by over 400 commonly prescribed medications such as those for high blood pressure, heart problems, and depression to name just a few, and also from radiation or chemotherapy treatments.  The danger with dry mouth is that it increases the chance of tooth decay or gum disease.  You need to take extra care that you are drinking plenty of water and stay away from caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, and sugary foods.  There are some over-the-counter medications that can help relieve the symptoms of dry mouth.

If you do have dentures, be sure to take good care of them as they will last longer.  The average life of dentures is five to seven years and it is important to follow good cleaning procedures.  Brush your dentures daily with mild soap or denture paste, and if you are not going to wear them at night, soak them in water or denture cleaning solution (be sure to rinse them thoroughly afterward).

Receding gums caused by periodontal disease or the result of aging can increase the chance of tooth decay occurring at the gum line which causes serious problems to the roots.  Good dental care is the best tool in preventing further damage.  See your dentist at the first sign of any bleeding or pain in your mouth.

MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan represents the very best in senior living residences with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We are dedicated to providing a true home for residents amidst a beautiful, serene setting by creating a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. The A Place for Mom, which is the largest assisted living referral service, offers some tips on their website of what to look for when taking a tour of a senior living community.  One of their suggestions includes “following your nose.”  In other words, does the place smell and look clean and fresh?  Also ask about activities going on in the community.  Do the staff and residents look like they are enjoying themselves?

Additionally, ask about the level of personal care provided as well as about safety and security procedures.  Do not forget to look at the outdoor spaces.  Finally, A Place for Mom suggests that you think about whether you or your loved one would be happy living there, and in the end, trust your instinct and follow your heart.
