Considering Independent Senior Living but Concerned About the Cost?

February 19, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

While a retirement community may sound appealing, many seniors worry that the cost is too high. The truth is, there is a wide range in the cost of independent senior living communities based on things like geographic location, services and amenities that all impact your monthly fee.

Luxury communities in metropolitan areas tend to be priced higher as do those in more desirable neighborhoods. Also, the apartment’s square footage, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, location within the community such as sought-after views or end-units, balconies or private patios can all up the price.

Experts say it is important to consider the value of the services and amenities you receive. In your own home, you may have paid for things like lawn care and landscaping services as well as encountered unexpected home repairs and maintenance upkeep. Utilities and property taxes for a home that may have more space than you need at this stage in your life can be costly.  Additionally, safely aging in place can often require expensive home modifications.

The social aspect of community living is something many seniors say they were surprised by the amount of value it offers. At MorningStar at RidgeGate, we make it easier to connect formally as well as informally with restaurant-style dining, game room, art studio, bistro bars, life enrichment rooms, theaters and a complement of wellness programs and activities. In addition, our grounds feature an expansive interior park with strolling paths, BBQ, fire pits and lawn games.

MorningStar at RidgeGate represents the finest in senior housing. Residents enjoy carefree retirement years with opportunities for new friendships, predictable budgeting and activities amid beautiful surroundings. Our contemporary-style apartments are maintenance free and allow you to spend more time doing what you love best, including being able to travel without worry. In addition, independent living residents have priority access to our assisted living and memory care suites, which gives you the security of knowing extra supportive care is available—if you ever need it. Please contact us for more information about pricing, availably and to schedule a tour.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Knee Pain in Older Adults

January 22, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

As we age, our knees take a beating. We use them to walk, stand and climb stairs, and they are used when we get up from a sitting or lying position. When our knees hurt, everyday tasks are harder to do. Chronic knee pain is often a form of arthritis that occurs when the cushioning cartilage protecting the knee joints starts to wear down. As more cartilage wears away, the space between the bones narrows resulting in bone rubbing against bone.

Knee arthritis is a deteriorating condition, and in addition to pain, can cause deformities such as knock knees or bowlegs. Experts explain there are three forms of arthritis that affect the knee. The first is a degenerative joint disease called osteoarthritis; another is the autoimmune disease known as rheumatoid arthritis; and finally post-traumatic knee arthritis that happens with a history of injury or trauma.

Factors increasing your risk for knee arthritis include the wear and tear that comes from age, being overweight, heredity, gender, and health conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, hemochromatosis (high levels of iron in the blood) and vitamin D deficiency. Treatments vary depending on the type of arthritis, severity of pain, a person’s age and other factors. Non-surgical treatments include injections, walking aids and bracing. Surgical treatments include total and partial knee replacements along with other solutions. If you experience chronic knee pain, talk to your doctor about a personalized plan to address your needs.

At MorningStar at RidgeGate, we offer stylish options for independent living and assisted living with 195 bright suites in spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans (with penthouses as large as 1838 square feet). Women Can Help Maintain Bone Health

December 20, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

Endocrinologist Kendall Moseley, MD, medical director of the Johns Hopkins Metabolic Bone & Osteoporosis Center, says most women do not know anything about their bone health. A recent survey from the National Osteoporosis Foundation backs up that sentiment finding around 94 percent of women do not worry about their skeletons. However, they add they should, as one in five women under 30 already have osteopenia, which is a step above full out osteoporosis. The good news is there are things you can do to protect your frame and avoid the things that are not good for bone health.

Experts say our bones constantly break down and rebuild every 10 years resulting in a new skeleton. The problem lies in the fact that after the age of 30, our bodies start to lose more bone than they make. Women’s estrogen levels also begin to drop around 30, which is another protector of women’s bone health.

An unbalanced diet or severely restricting calories in an effort to stay thin or lose weight can be another cause of low bone density; and too much caffeine, salt and alcohol all interfere with retaining calcium, our primary bone builder. Even some medications deplete calcium and include certain anti-depressants and contraceptives so be sure to ask your doctor about side effects of medications you take. It is important for women to include dairy products or foods like beans and nuts to increase their calcium intake. Protein from plants and lean meats are also good ways to get calcium.

Along with a good diet, exercise is an important element of keeping bones strong. While some exercises are better than others, scientists recommend weight bearing exercises like walking and running as good ways to build strong bones. Strength training exercises may be the ultimate bone builder and include things like pushups and squats or kickboxing.

At MorningStar at RidgeGate, our beautiful community offers 124 suites for independent living, 71 suites for assisted living and 29 suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with memory impairment. To enhance quality of life, residents can take advantage of our many meaningful wellness programs and activities as well as our onsite luxury amenities. Determining the Cause of Intellectual Decline in Older Adults

December 06, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

Experts report that as people age, dementia and depression are both common conditions and may be confused with one another. Additionally, one may lead to the other as depression is linked to a higher risk for dementia, and dementia can cause depression.

The Harvard Medical School explains depression in the elderly can lead to a “phenomenon called pseudodementia—an apparent intellectual decline that stems from a lack of energy or effort.” They say individuals with this problem are often forgetful, move slowly, exhibit low motivation and signs of slowing mental prowess. If a loved one experiences these types of symptoms, their doctor may treat it with the same medications used to treat depression. As the person’s mood improves, they typically begin to function at their previous level.

Professionals share a few ways depression and dementia differ to help families and healthcare providers determine what is going on. One important difference is the time span of the decline.  A person with depression typically shows a faster decline in mental functioning than those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Also, Alzheimer’s disease causes confusion and disorientation as well as problems with short-term memory. Depression causes problems with concentration.

People suffering from depression do not have more than the usual difficulties with writing, speaking and motor skills, and are more aware of any memory problems they are experiencing. People suffering from Alzheimer’s disease seem indifferent to those types of changes. However, to determine the cause of the problem, it is important to make an appointment with the person’s healthcare provider.

Along with independent living and assisted living, MorningStar at RidgeGate provides compassionate, comprehensive care to those with memory impairment.  Residents receive 24-hour care, daily health monitoring, access to a full-time nurse, and participate in wellness programs and services tailored to their special needs.  For trusted senior living in Lone Tree, Colorado, please contact us to learn more.

Downsizing Offers Seniors the Start of a New Adventure

September 20, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

Instead of feeling sad about moving from a home that perhaps is too large or costly for you to care for, think about moving into a smaller apartment or condo as the start of a new adventure.   However, to do it right, you should be organized.  Experts suggest you only take with you the things that bring joy and find ways to get rid of the rest.  If that piece of advice still finds you with way too much stuff, then take a moment to picture how you want your new life to look.  Is it a sleek, minimalist décor or more like a smaller, compact version of your present home?

Some simple solutions to help you decorate your new apartment include bringing with you or buying multi-purpose furniture.  This could include upholstered storage benches or cubes, nesting coffee tables, extension desks, and sized-down sofa and chairs more suited to a compact footprint.  Attractive baskets and storage carts also help to make a small place feel more organized.

If you want to use some of your current furniture, measure it, and then draw up a floor plan of the new place and lay it all out to see how it will fit.  In addition, since your new place is smaller, it will most likely not have as many closets as your old home so go through your clothing and only take the items you truly enjoy wearing.  Give the rest to charity.  Lastly, consider the amenities at your new place.  For example if they have an onsite fitness center, you probably do not need to bring along your own in-home treadmill or stationary bike.

At MorningStar at RidgeGate, our beautiful senior community offers stylish suites that are ready to move into and just require your furnishings and personal items. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, fitness center, art studio, swimming pool, life enrichment rooms and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  If you are looking for independent living or assisted living in Lone Tree, Colorado, we encourage you to contact us or visit our website to learn more.

Exercising Regularly Reduces Your Rate of Bone Loss

August 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

Did you know over half of the women in America are older than 50 and up to a quarter of men will break a bone because of osteoporosis according to the Harvard Medical School. To prevent bones from weakening, the National Institute of Health says exercise is key to keeping bones strong.

If you are taking prescription drugs, you should read the fine print that comes with your medications to see if you are taking any drugs that can lead to bone loss, increase your risk of a fall, and/or increase your risk of breaking a bone. Steroids, blood thinners and thyroid medications as well as drugs used to treat acid reflux, depression and some antibiotics are just a few of the medications known to interfere with bone health.

The Mayo Clinic suggests that to aid in the prevention of bone loss, weight-bearing exercises should be part of your daily activities. Weight-bearing exercises involve your bones supporting your weight. Examples include walking, dancing, low-impact aerobics, elliptical training machines, stair climbing and gardening. Along with slowing down mineral loss, these exercises also provide some protection toward better cardiovascular health.

In addition to weight-bearing exercises, doctors remind older adults to additionally do exercises that focus on balance, strength and flexibility. The NIH recommends for better bone health you should do at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) a week of moderate-intensity exercise OR at least 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity exercise.

A bone density test can help you determine if you are at risk for osteoporosis and/or whether you already have some bone loss. If your test’s result indicates a problem, your healthcare provider may suggest you take osteoporosis medicine to help reduce further bone loss. If you already have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, osteopenia or have other physical limitations, please check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise.

At MorningStar at RidgeGate we offer adults 55+ a carefree lifestyle where they can comfortably and safely age in place.  Our fitness center, swimming pool and exercise classes help keep residents moving. How Does Independent Living Differ From Assisted Living?

June 14, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

Have you been thinking it’s time for a change in your living arrangements and would love a more manageable, relaxed lifestyle?  If you have started looking into senior living options your next question may be “what is the difference between independent living and assisted living, and which one is best suited to my needs?”

Independent living is ideal for active seniors who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle.  While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, wellness programs, day trips and meals.  It is also perfect for those who love the sound of predictable budgeting, community living and built-in companionship.  Care services are not provided but being a resident in an independent community may give you priority for a move into assisted living or memory care if the need should arise.

Assisted living is designed for seniors who need help with everyday activities in order to improve their quality of life and maintain their independence.  Communities will have an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour care.  Generally, a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family.  Other amenities offered by assisted living communities may include a range of activities and wellness programs.

At MorningStar at RidgeGate, you will discover senior living at it’s best.  Our community is designed to enhance the lives of our residents and provide a home where seniors can safely, and comfortably age in place.  Along with inviting common areas both inside and out, we offer a range of amenities and wellness programs to promote a healthy and engaged lifestyle. Our stylish apartments come in a variety of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans, and we are pet friendly. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding independent or assisted living in Lone Tree, Colorado.

Enjoy Healthy Fruits and Vegetables This Summer

June 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

With summer finally here, so is a plentiful selection of fresh, garden grown fruits and vegetables in our supermarkets, farmer markets and produce stands. As dietitians recommend adults eat at least three servings of vegetables a day and two of fruit, summer’s yummy selection makes it easier and tastier to do. The US News & World Report published an article with a review of some of the five healthiest in-season fruits and vegetables to eat at mealtime or for snacks.

The first recommendation is cherries. Across the country you will find a delicious assortment including Bing and Van, and the Rainer, a premium cherry that is a cross between Bing and Van as well as both sweet and tart varieties. A cup of cherries (about 21) has 90 calories, three grams of fiber, and is a good source of potassium and vitamin C. “Cherries are also a great source of anthocyanins, which offer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, cardiovascular and other benefits.” Research has found cherries can improve sleep and help relieve gout.

The next group of some of the season’s favorites is various garden fresh, leafy greens. These include lettuce, arugula, watercress, spinach, kale and romaine. Studies show leafy greens can help lessen the risk of heart disease, macular degeneration, cancer and other conditions. Not only do they taste good but are easy to add to a variety of foods.

Studies find strawberries are another superfood and provide a range of antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium and fiber. They are easy to eat as is or can be added to a variety of dishes.

Not only do summer tomatoes taste better but experts say the tomatoes we buy now are superior to tomatoes we buy during the rest of the year. They are a good source of vitamin C and lycopene, “a potent antioxidant that helps protect your eyesight, provides anti-cancer properties and heart health benefits.” The last food the article mentioned is watermelon, which is typically a requirement at any summertime gathering. Watermelon is a great way to rehydrate as it is 92% water; and like tomatoes, it too contains the beneficial lycopene.

At MorningStar Senior Living at RidgeGate, we believe that diet is the centerpiece of personal wellness. As a resident you will be treated to a variety of seasonal menus featuring the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced whenever possible. We also use ingredients with high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds known to support brain health and aptly named “Super Foods.”  These include items like berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate and greens. For unsurpassed independent or assisted living, Highlands Ranch, CO area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar, a true home with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.

As the Temperatures Rise - Remember to Stay Hydrated

May 22, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

With summer bringing hotter, steamier temperatures, it is a good time to remind everyone, and especially seniors, to protect themselves from dehydration, which happens when our bodies lose more fluid than it takes in. Dr. Samuel Keim, a professor and head of the department of emergency medicine at the University of Arizona, explains one of the reasons adults 70 and older are more at risk for dehydration is “a diminished thirst mechanism and a decreased ability to compensate for high-temperature environments.” He adds this means seniors are less likely to feel thirsty or realize they are becoming dehydrated.

Moreover, many seniors suffer from medical conditions such as respiratory ailments, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease exacerbating the problem. Also, medications like anticholinergics or antihistamines disrupt the body’s natural reflexes and reduce its heat tolerance causing a person to sweat less. Other problematic drugs include diuretic medications that increase the amount of water and salt expelled from the body as urine or beta blockers that interfere with the body’s natural response to becoming dehydrated.

Heat-exhaustion symptoms can include fatigue, thirst, profuse sweating, lightheadedness, cramps, nausea and weakness, and need to be addressed immediately as they can lead to heat stroke, which can be deadly. Treatment includes getting the person out of the heat into a cool location and removing heavy clothing. Spraying the person with water and directing a fan on them also helps. Seek emergency attention if the person is confused or fainting but continue to treat the person until help arrives.

Play Games to Have Fun While Exercising Your Mind

April 24, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

We all know that even as seniors, physical exercise is important to maintaining healthy bodies but medical experts want us to remember that mental exercise is also essential to good brain health.  Luckily there are many fun and entertaining ways to exercise our mind and include an array of games on our tablets or computers as well as ones that only need pen and paper.  Games like Sudoku, mahjong, chess, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and solitaire are enjoyable and challenging ways to improve memory and stimulate the brain.

Moreover, there is good evidence that supports this claim such as the study from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  The research team conducted a long-term study that found seniors who did crosswords four days a week had a 47 percent lower risk of dementia than those who only did them once a week.

Also, while there is the perception that chess is only for those who are very intelligent, it turns out the skills used to play a good game of chess are ones we all should cultivate as they may make us smarter.  Experts say chess encourages “concentration and focus around ‘if then’ thinking, which is useful when making decisions.”  The game forces you to think a few steps ahead and that type of thinking can be especially helpful for older people who are navigating options in life and could use a little help with creative thinking.

The good news is that many of these types of games are free or cost very little and even the Internet offers lots of options.  To play a game of solitaire, you only need a deck of cards but playing on your tablet offers many different varieties of games of which some may be new to you.  Crossword and Sudoku books as well as jigsaw puzzles can be ordered online and are very reasonably priced for the entertainment you get from them.  They also make great gifts for seniors.

At MorningStar at RidgeGate, our goal is to provide the finest senior living in the area, and we provide all the services needed to support and enhance our residents’ physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing. Our beautiful community has a variety of floor plans for both independent living and assisted living. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood offers specialized care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments. Through Lavender Sky, our caregivers thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the “purple world” of dementia as they cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us. By exploring each of our residents’ life stories including their history and preferences, we create an individualized care plan. We also involve and engage family members in how to follow our lead.

As You Age, Maintain Your Independence With Regular Exercise

March 29, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As we grow older, many people begin to slow down. However, we know a lack of exercise and activity can cause reduced muscle strength and flexibility, and lead to health problems that make beginning exercise that much more difficult. In fact, a government study estimated “nearly 80% of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week, with adults 65 and older being the least likely to engage in a regular exercise routine.”

This is why experts recommend older adults make a plan to stay more active and commit to it. Before you begin any new exercise or activity, talk to your doctor as your health challenges may make some physical activities not possible. Guidance from your healthcare providers can help develop a plan most effective in achieving overall conditioning despite any limited endurance.

Areas to focus on include strengthening leg muscles to improve mobility and balance, which is part of maintaining your independence as strong legs support so many basic everyday activities, such as sitting down, standing up, and walking. In addition, safe upper body exercises are important in giving a person the strength to get up from an armchair or carrying and lifting items as part of performing routine household activities. Exercises focusing on maintaining or improving balance are also important in reducing a person’s risk for a fall.

For exceptional independent or assisted living, Highlands Ranch, CO area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at RidgeGate, a true destination for successful aging. As We Age, Our Thinking Process Begins to Slow Down

February 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

Regular Exercise Reduces the Risk of a Fall

January 22, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Not only is physical exercise good for our heart and cognitive health but it can help older adults stay steady on their feet. Studies show regular physical activity can reduce the risk of falls in older adults at a high risk of falling by nearly one third.

Experts explain certain kinds of exercise helps increase muscle mass and bone strength as well as improve balance and coordination, fight off osteoporosis, and reduce the risk for fractures and broken bones. Some of the best exercises are known as weight-bearing, which require a person to carry their weight and work against gravity. Examples include walking, dancing, hiking, climbing stairs, jogging and playing tennis or basketball. Doctors say if you can manage it, increasing your pace during aerobics, jogging and power walking make the exercises even more effective at strengthening bone density.

Resistance exercises also work against gravity and help build muscle mass and improve bone strength. Strength training with weights, weight machines or resistance bands are all examples of exercises that rely on muscle contractions that tug on bones to stimulate them to bulk up. Along the same line, impact exercises such as jumping jacks and walking or running uphill have been shown to improve bone density fairly quickly.

Healthcare providers say to be sure to check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program, especially if you’re taking medications that slow your coordination or throw off your balance. According to the Surgeon General, your optimal goal should be at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days, preferably daily.

For exceptional independent or assisted living, Highlands Ranch, CO area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at RidgeGate. Senior Independent Living Makes it Easy to Make New Friends

January 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports about 14.7 million seniors live alone. We know various causes including chronic and worsening health conditions, hearing loss, no longer driving, mobility issues, loss of a spouse or other loved ones can result in loneliness and isolation for older adults on their own.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Social isolation and loneliness in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States, and puts them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions.” They cite statistics showing social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death, and rivals those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Moreover, studies find social isolation is associated with approximately a 50% increased risk of dementia, a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke. The CDC also warns loneliness is linked to higher risk of depression, suicide and anxiety.

Housing for independent seniors offers older adults a built-in community of people at a similar stage of life as well as a variety of social activities that appeal to many tastes and preferences. The range of amenities and activities make it easy for residents to interact with others and to forge new friendships. Another advantage to 55+ independent living communities is the entire place is designed to accommodate the needs of seniors. This includes apartments with wheelchair accessible doorways, low thresholds, well-lit spaces, handrails, walk-in showers and tubs in bathrooms, and emergency call systems.

Home Safety and Alzheimer’s Disease

December 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

Alzheimer’s disease results in symptoms causing impaired judgement, forgetfulness, and agitation, as well as problems with gait and balance increasing the risk for falls. This is why experts say it is important to take the proper steps to keep a loved one safe if they have Alzheimer’s. They explain the goal of caregivers should be a balancing act between providing an environment that offers as much independence as possible, while at the same time, ensuring the person’s safety and wellbeing.

Recommendations include removing knobs from the stove, and if the person can handle it, install automatic shut-off valves with timer and motion sensors. At a certain stage of the disease, it is not safe for the person to be cooking, and if needed, investigate food delivery services. Additionally, lower the temperature of the water coming from the taps to avoid the person getting scalded from hot water. As confusion is part of Alzheimer’s, experts say store dangerous chemicals and cleaning supplies in a locked area.

To reduce the risk of falls, install grab bars in the bathroom and put non-skid mats in the tub or shower. Stairways should be well-lit and uncluttered as well as hallways and pathways from room to room. Doctors who work with Alzheimer’s patients caution it is important to remember it is a progressive disease, and there may be a time when more restrictive protocols are necessary such as closing off a staircase altogether.

Along with independent and assisted living, Highlands Ranch, CO area MorningStar at RidgeGate offers 29 suites for residents suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
