Have You Noticed Signs of Memory Loss in a Loved One?

June 30, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Have you recently noticed some signs of memory loss or confusion in a parent or another loved one?  Are you worried it may be the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia?  We understand this may be a touchy subject to broach with your loved one, which is why experts recommend you do your homework first and learn about the common signs of the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains that Alzheimer’s can cause changes in cognitive abilities, executive function and behavior.  Those afflicted may start having memory problems along with difficulty completing familiar tasks.  They may also become confused as to time and place.  Other problems involve a marked change in their judgement and trouble with language skills and abstract thinking.  Mood swings or changes in personality can also signal Alzheimer’s.  All of these are common signs that can point to Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia but only a specialist can make a diagnosis.  You should ask your parent’s healthcare provider for a recommendation to a neurologist who will perform tests to eliminate other causes for the behavior.

If you are looking for senior living residences in the Denver area, we encourage you to consider MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan.  Along with 55 bright suites for assisted living, we have 29 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Our holistic approach to memory care effectively uses the power of dance, music, art, exercise, aromatherapy and animals to heal and comfort residents.  Please contact us for more information about our compassionate, loving community, we look forward to meeting you and your family.

Is it Time to Consider a Memory Care Community?

June 25, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Caring for a parent or a spouse with Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease is a difficult task.  As the disease progresses, families become concerned about their ability to keep the person well cared for and safe.  For some families, trying to hang on and care for a loved one at home may be creating a situation that is not optimal for the individual or the caregiver.

Experts say there are signals that more care is needed such as is the person eating regularly and have they lost or gained an unusual amount of weight lately.  Do you suspect the person is missing medication doses or may be taking too much medication? Have they fallen recently? Have you found the burners on the stove left on?  Other warning signs may include aggressive behaviors, wondering, or forgetting where they are when they are out of the home. Neurologist Douglas Scharre, MD, director of the Center for Cognitive and Memory Disorders at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explains that “The main reason to move out of a home to assisted living is when there are not enough resources to safely care for the person with dementia at home.”

Another reason for more professional care, and just as important, is caregiver burnout.  Experts explain that you should not feel guilty if caring for your loved one is taking a toll on your own health and wellbeing.  They also suggest the person may be bored at home. Assisted living communities with dedicated memory care have activities geared toward those with dementia, and the person may find comfort in being around those in a similar situation.

If it is time to look at assisted living companies which offer specialized memory care, we suggest MorningStar of Boulder.  Our loving community has 46 secure suites dedicated to those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  We have a deep understanding of the disease and feel it is our calling, and privilege to provide individualized memory care.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Exercise Can Increase Lifespan

June 22, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Exercise Can Increase Lifespan

The World Health Organization (WHO) explains that, “even gentle, regular exercise such as walking or swimming can increase lifespan by around three to five years.”  They say it can also help prevent falls by improving muscle strength and balance as well as reduce the risk of chronic diseases, depression and cognitive decline.

Regular cardiovascular exercise such as walking, cycling or light housework (anything that raises the heart rate) helps to reduce the risk of a stroke or heart attack.  They increase blood flow to the heart and improve your overall health. In addition, many older adults, especially women, are at risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures.  These conditions benefit from weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, climbing stairs, dancing, or step aerobics. The WHO reports that exercise reduces the risk of a hip fracture by as much as 40%.  If you have osteoporosis, doctors advise against putting any sudden or excessive strain on your bones. Please check with your healthcare provider before starting any exercises as they can give you safe ones to do.

The WHO also states that exercise is an effective remedy to improve many chronic health conditions including arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes.  They recommend older adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity each week.” They add that older adults with “poor mobility should perform physical activity to enhance balance and prevent falls on 3 or more days per week.”

A study from the American Geriatrics Society published in the Science Daily, found that exercise training yields the most significant improvements in “functional balance, daily activity, fear of falling, and depression levels.”  Seniors who participated in regular exercise programs were also found to have more confidence and independence.

As one of the top assisted living companies in the nation, MorningStar’s goal is to create communities that are a true “home” for our residents and meet their social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs.  Our beautiful Boulder community offers assisted living and memory care along with a wide range of resort-style amenities and care services (including daily exercise).  Please see our website for more information.

Residents of Senior Living Communities Require Less Hospitalization

June 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

A Place for Mom posted the results of a study from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, which was published in the journal, The Gerontologist.  The study focused on “vulnerable” seniors, who were defined as older adults with moderate or low incomes who lived alone. The purpose of the study was to “understand how the senior living environment can mitigate the effects of multiple chronic conditions on hospitalizations.”

Hospitalization information from participants in the 2002-2012 Health Retirement Study was compared with the results of the question, “Is your home part of a retirement community, senior citizens’ housing or another type of housing that offers services for older adults or someone with a disability?”  Results showed that older adults with multiple chronic conditions in senior living residences were less likely to experience high levels of hospitalization than those who lived alone.  Researchers believe there are positive effects accrued from the various support services available in senior housing environments, which help vulnerable elders to better manage their health conditions.

At MorningStar at Jordan, our primary job is to provide all the services needed to support and enhance our residents’ physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing.  As one of Centennial, Colorado’s top assisted living communities, residents are provided with 24/7 Care Managers, access to licensed nurses, Medication Managers, care plan reviews, scheduled health and wellness evaluations, scheduled physician visits, pharmacy services, transportation to doctor appointments and much more.  In addition, we offer a wide range of wellness programs and activities that are sure to keep you as busy as you like.

Socialization is Important for Seniors

June 20, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

While children are encouraged to socialize, we often forget it is important for all of us, especially older adults, to socialize.  However, as we age, circumstances such as retirement, the death of a spouse, and friends moving away or falling ill can makes it difficult for seniors to maintain healthy social connections.

The National Institute on Aging reported on several studies that appear to suggest a strong correlation between social interactions and the health and well-being of older adults.  The research indicates social isolation and loneliness may have significant adverse effects on the elderly and impact their physical as well as mental health.  Scientists explain that, “Positive indicators of social well-being may be associated with lower levels of interleukin-6 in otherwise healthy people. Interleukin-6 is an inflammatory factor implicated in age-related disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and some forms of cancer.”

The studies suggest that socially isolated older adults have a higher risk of morbidity and mortality.  Loneliness may be a contributing factor for elevated systolic blood pressure as well as put older adults at risk for symptoms of depression.

Researchers believe that strong social connections may help to reduce stress and stave off anxiety and depression.  One study even showed a 70 percent slower decrease in cognitive decline in those with a strong social network.

As one of the top communities for senior living Highlands Ranch CO and the surrounding area has to offer, MorningStar at RidgeGate offers a whole host of wellness programs and activities that enhance and support mental, physical, spiritual and social connections.  Each day residents have the opportunity to engage the mind, body and spirit as well as find ways to learn and contribute.  Please visit our website to learn why MorningStar is such a great place to call home.

The Joy of Serving “Heroes”

June 18, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

At Denver’s MorningStar senior living communities, we feel privileged to have the opportunity to serve seniors – true heroes who have lived through both good times and bad and have many fascinating stories to share.  Our older generation has experienced times of war as well as seen technologies and innovations become part of everyday life that was unimaginable in their youth.

People working in senior living are often surprised to discover how pleasurable it is to serve seniors and how much they learn from it.  After all, if we take the time to listen, seniors have plenty of valuable life lessons to pass on to the younger generation.  Over the span of a lifetime, they have gained a wealth of experience and knowledge, which provides them with a unique perspective.  And older folks typically love having someone around who is willing to listen to them and to look at pictures and cherished mementos from the past.

When you hang out with seniors, you get the chance to hear about their various backgrounds and interesting careers and to be inspired by their life-long perseverance.  They can help you see what is really important in life, and you use their life lessons to develop more rewarding relationships with our own family.  Also you will come away with a better understanding of the aging process and increased empathy for those suffering from illnesses and disabilities.

Moreover our Denver MorningStar communities allow you to work with like-minded, loving people who also have a felt calling to serve.  In fact we are proud to say our communities are like an extended family.  Our open assisted jobs are at MorningStar of Arvada, MorningStar at Jordan, MorningStar of Littleton, MorningStar at RidgeGate, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, and Parker Senior Living by MorningStar.

At MorningStar Senior Living, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  We are committed to a foundation built upon honoring God and valuing all seniors, and are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve seniors.  For a rewarding career, please visit MorningStar’s Career page for information on assisted living jobs in Denver

Often Overlooked Sources of Funding Assisted Living

June 16, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

When it becomes apparent that your parent or another senior loved one needs more care than they are getting at home, you may worry that an assisted living home is just too expensive.  At MorningStar at Jordan, we understand the concern but want families to know we can help direct them to often overlooked sources of funding.

However first, we want you to remember that our assisted living community offers a whole new lifestyle.  Monthly fees will include the necessities and much more including a fully equipped private suite, daily meals, and transportation services.  Additionally, each suite includes cable TV and utilities as well as an emergency call system.  We also supply a full range of meaningful wellness programs and fun activities and entertainment.

One of the sources of income we discuss with potential residents and their families includes the generous “Aid & Attendance” Pension issued by the US Department of Veteran Affairs.  The monthly benefit pays for assisted living to qualified veterans, as well as their surviving spouse.  We will direct you to a local resource that can help ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.

We also remind seniors to take a look at their Long-term Care insurance policies.  They can help to protect your personal assets by paying for senior care up to the amounts set forth in the policy.  To determine your LTC policy’s coverage, check the Benefits Summary section for specifics on the type of coverage, daily benefit, policy limits and elimination period.  Keep in mind premiums may be tax deductible, and benefits from tax-qualified plans are non-taxable, which makes this option even more attractive.

Another source of funding to help with assisted living costs can be to leverage your life insurance policies.  Many whole life and universal life policies build a cash reserve through interest-earning excess premiums known as the policy’s “cash value”.

Before taking advantage of any of these funding methods, please consult with a financial advisor.  MorningStar at Jordan’s team is ready to answer questions regarding pricing and availability of our beautiful assisted living and memory care community.

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living home in the area

Independent Living or Assisted Living?

June 13, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Seniors often end up feeling confused about whether independent living or assisted living is their best senior living option.   Experts say the most important thing is to base your decision on is how well you manage your daily personal care activities on your own.

If you need help with things like meal preparations, personal hygiene, managing medications, and household chores, assisted living is probably your best bet.  However, if you are an active senior who is handling these tasks on your own but would like convenient access to hospitality services such as dining, wellness programs and activities, housekeeping, and companionship, independent living is perfect for you.

Moreover, for seniors who still feel comfortable managing their own personal care for now but worry things could change in the future, communities such as MorningStar at RidgeGate are the answer.  Our community offers 124 bright suites for independent living, with penthouses as large as 1838 square feet.  In addition, we have 71 suites for assisted living and 29 secure suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments.  If down the road, you feel you need more assistance than our independent living offers, you will have priority to one of our assisted living or memory care suites.

MorningStar at RidgeGate’s goal is to provide the best independent and assisted living Highlands Ranch CO and the surrounding area has to offer.  Our residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, and a hospitality and care team who feel called and honored to serve seniors.  Please visit our website for more information and to inquire about pricing and availability.

Helping Your Loved One Transition into Assisted Living

June 12, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

While we recognize the many benefits of senior living residences, any change is difficult and moving into assisted living is certainly a big change for most seniors.  This is why experts have tips to help families support their loved one during the transition.

A couple of common problems families encounter are a parent feeling abandoned or frustrated by a perceived loss of independence.  Your loved one may also experience problems adjusting to a new routine.  They may resent having to downsize and moving from their own home to a smaller apartment.

Psychologist Dr. Deborah L. Stote explains it will help seniors adjust to their new home if they get encouragement and support from their family during their first days and weeks at the senior living community.  She says seniors “need positive reassurance that they are moving into a new chapter of their lives, rather than ending the life they have always known.”   However, Dr. Stote cautions families not to do too much “handholding.”  Being too protective can be counterproductive and prevent them from trying to make an adjustment to their new home.

While transitioning to assisted living can be difficult for some seniors, others quickly realize the advantage of no longer having to worry about their homes’ upkeep or needing to prepare their own meals.  Their earlier feelings of resentment or sadness turn into feelings of gratitude as they understand their new home is better equipped to help them maintain their independence and can give them the support and care they need.

MorningStar at Jordan offers 55 assisted living suites on three levels, with spacious studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floor plans. Our Reflections Neighborhood offers 29 suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with memory loss from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related disease.  Please contact us to schedule a visit to our community to find out for yourself why our residents are proud to call us home.

MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan represents the very best in senior living residences with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We are dedicated to providing a true home for residents amidst a beautiful, serene setting by creating a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Your Next Doctor’s Appointment

June 07, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Dr. Danielle Ofri, author and associate professor of medicine at New York University, wrote an in-depth article for the New York Times detailing the strategies seniors can use to get more out of their next doctor appointment.  She starts by explaining that you should take a few minutes to figure out what you want to get out of the appointment.  Ask yourself if this is just a well visit or do you have something specific you want to discuss with the doctor such as a new symptom or problem.  It might be you wish to discuss changes in your diet or lifestyle or to bring up topics such as end-of-life preference?

Dr. Ofri stresses that quality is better than quantity and being focused on a couple of things you hope to accomplish from the appointment will probably result in more specific answers.  Also scheduling regular appointments will give you the time to concentrate on your various needs.

To ensure your doctor has the information he or she needs, write down all the medications and dosages you are taking beforehand, including any herbal supplements and vitamins.  If it is easier, bring all your pill bottles so the staff can go through your medications and daily dosages.   Remember your insurance information, and if it is a new doctor, bring along your health records.

Another important part of a successful doctor visit is communication.  Always keep in mind you are your own best advocate and want to make sure you are clearly heard.  Experts suggest you keep track of the time to make sure your primary concerns are covered.  Furthermore, do not bring up new problems right at the end of the visit but rather schedule a new appointment to discuss those issues.  Most importantly the experts say to not leave the office until you completely understand your treatment plan.  If you need, ask one of the nurses to go over the doctor’s instructions with you.  After you leave, go over everything that occurred during the visit including treatment plans and recommendations for any follow-up appointments and write down anything you may forget.

Does Your Loved One Need More Care?

May 31, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

It is sometimes difficult for adult children to realize their parent needs more care in order to ensure their safety and wellbeing.  This is why MorningStar at Jordan offers a Decision Guide to help families navigate through the process of making the move to senior living, especially assisted living, which is a new paradigm in wellness and engagement.

Some of the typical signs that indicate your parent needs more help include falling, driving mishaps, and forgetting significant things such as leaving the stove-top on.  Also really take a look at how they are living.  Does their home seem a lot more cluttered and less tidy?  Is unopened mail piling up?  Does your parent suffer from failing eyesight, poor balance or forgetfulness?  Another sign your parent is not doing well on their own is if they look less groomed or appear to be wearing the same clothes for days at a time.

When you put all of this together, it probably means your loved one is not able to care for themselves as they once did, and it is time to begin discussing alternatives to ensure their safety and wellbeing.  Start by gathering your family together in a relaxed atmosphere and approach the conversation slowly.  Remember your first conversation is just a starting point and the decision will most likely be make in stages.  During the conversation it should be noted that getting the care your loved one needs will benefit the whole family.  You may even be pleasantly surprised to learn your parent has started to think they need a change.

We want you to know MorningStar at Jordan’s team is ready to help.  Please call or email with questions or to set up a tour to see one of the finest senior living residences in Centennial CO.

Balance Exercises Help Seniors to Stay Active

May 31, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

It is important for older adults to take precautions to prevent falls as the resulting injuries tend to be more serious such as a broken hip or head trauma.  However doctors also point out that being sedentary is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is important to keep moving.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that one out of every four Americans aged 65 and older falls every year but say there are things that seniors can do to help prevent a fall.  The trick is to find a way to safely move about while taking into account any balance issues you may experience.

As many adults are less active as they get older, it can exacerbate the physical effects of aging. Experts say, “Failure to engage in even mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”  Other issues that can lead to falls include poor eyesight and taking medications with side-effects such as drowsiness, dizziness and low blood pressure.  Chronic health conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis as well as problems with numbness in the feet can also increase the risk of falls.

The good news is there are a variety of easy-to-do balance-training exercises that can help seniors improve their balance. Even if you rely on a cane or other assistive devices, balance exercise can improve your mobility.  While it is helpful to join a class that offers balance-training exercises, there are also exercises that can be done throughout the day right at home.  One example is to try standing on one foot while close to the kitchen counter.  If you need to, keep your hand on the counter for support and as you feel more confident try taking your hand off.   Another thing you can do is to try and get up from a chair without using your arms.

MorningStar at RidgeGate strives to be the best senior living Highlands Ranch CO and the surrounding area has to offer, and we take the well-being of our residents very seriously.  Our residents have many opportunities to stay active including joining the walking club, taking a swim in the saline swimming pool or working out at the fitness center.  See our website to learn more.

Gardening is Both Fun and Healthy for Seniors

May 26, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Research has shown gardening to be an effective low-impact exercise for seniors.  Along with providing a moderate amount of aerobic exercise for aging adults, gardening can offer benefits to your mental and emotional health.  To keep it accessible to the elderly for whom lifting and bending can be difficult; it is smart to incorporate a few modifications such as raised garden beds as well as using various ergonomic tools.

One of the best things about gardening is it stimulates all of the senses and offers an excellent excuse to get outside and soak up some vitamin D as well as boost serotonin levels in your brain.  Serotonin is a chemical that improves your mood and helps you to feel calm and centered.  In addition to relieving stress and anxiety, gardening gives seniors a sense of purpose and accomplishment with its beautiful or edible finished product.  It also is an enjoyable way to use of all of your motor skills and improve endurance and strength.

Working in a garden has also proven helpful to those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.  Gardening can help recall pleasant memories from the past and remind a person of healthier times.  Experts advise not to give someone with dementia a sharp tool.

If seniors plan to get out and garden, they need to protect themselves against pests and the elements.  It is recommended that seniors avoid the heat of the day and apply plenty of sunblock and wear protective clothing including sunglasses and a hat.  They should have shady areas available with benches or chairs so they may easily take a break as needed.  It is also important to remember to drink plenty of fluids as dehydration can be a problem.

Among our many services and amenities at MorningStar at Jordan, we offer residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and create something beautiful with our resident gardening beds.  Please visit our website to learn more about the finest assisted living home in Centennial CO.

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.
