Learn More About Assisted Living

September 30, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Many families mistakenly think senior living and particularly assisted living is just a more luxurious nursing home. The fact is nursing homes are intended for people who are unable to care for themselves due to physical or mental conditions and require around-the-clock skilled nursing care. Residents may be bedridden or in wheelchairs and receive ongoing palliative and preventative long-term care.

Assisted living is for seniors who are mostly independent but require help with what is known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and include things like dressing, bathing and other personal care activities. In some cases, people move into assisted living knowing that while they do not now need assistance with such tasks, they may need help in the near future.

Assisted living also makes sense for seniors who are looking for more companionship and love the security of knowing they are not alone. As many assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Jordan have an emergency call system in each suite, you can rest easy knowing help is just minutes away. Another perk of MorningStar at Jordan is we offer scheduled transportation so you will never have to worry about getting to your doctor appointments and other important errands.

Moreover, while MorningStar’s suites vary from studios to two-bedrooms, all of our suites are smartly designed to make the most of the space they offer with high ceilings, bay windows (in most units), and both natural and overhead lighting. In addition, residents often tell us what a relief it was to give up their large family homes that were hard to keep clean as well as all of the maintenance required. Residents also enjoy weekly housekeeping, laundry and linen services.

MorningStar at Jordan offers the kind of senior living Centennial, CO families have come to count on. We have 55 bright suites for assisted living and another 29 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Visit our website to learn more about our community, our amenities, and our services. We look forward to hearing from you.

Specialized Memory Care in Boulder, Colorado

September 27, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Boulder offers individualized, specialized care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Our holistic approach to memory care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.

Our Reflections Neighborhood is clustered in a separate area of our community and is specifically designed to meet the needs of residents throughout the various stages of the disease.  The expansive area houses 46 secure suites and is intended to encourage residents to safely explore their surroundings.

Normally, mealtimes in the Reflections Neighborhood are as much about Community as they are about Nutrition, with residents and team members eating together.  Family style meals allow team members to encourage residents’ appetites as well as to provide any needed assistance with eating. During the coronavirus outbreak, however, memory care residents still take meals in the dining room with tables spread out for social distancing.  In addition, much of our food is modified out of respect for some of our residents’ compromised eating abilities and include finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

As dementia care specialists, we focus on nurturing and supporting the essence of the individual, regardless of the level of memory loss.  In order to create an effective individualized care plan to guide our daily interactions and communication techniques, we meet with the senior and their family to learn as much as we can about the person’s background, talents and preferences even before they join our community.  Our specialized care incorporates music, art, dance, and aromatherapy to heal and comfort residents while taking into account the uniqueness of each person.

Another thing that makes MorningStar of Boulder a special place for memory care is our loving, compassionate team who feels privileged to serve and is made up of men and women who willingly go the extra mile to meet the needs of our residents.  Please visit our website for more information.

MorningStar of Boulder represents the finest in senior living with our distinct mission statement – “to honor, to value, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents within a beautiful setting. Please contact us to learn more about exceptional assisted living and memory care in Boulder.

This Year, Its Especially Important to Get a Flu Shot

September 26, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Along with all of the health concerns regarding COVID-19, medical experts remind the general public that the best defense against contracting the flu is to get an annual flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says while wearing a mask is “an important preventive measure against airborne viruses such as the flu, there is no guarantee that they will prevent transmission completely.” So even if you are wearing a mask whenever you are out in public and/or unable to socially distance, experts stress you should still get vaccinated against the flu.

Part of the reason flu spreads so easily is a person can be contagious anywhere from 1 day before and up to 7 days after the individual is symptomatic, which means the spread of influenza can occur before the person is aware they have the virus and for days thereafter. Moreover, the flu can be transmitted indirectly by coming into contact with infected surfaces. Therefore, some of the same procedures we have adopted with COVID-19 such as regular hand washing and sanitizing shared surfaces will help reduce the spread. Also, mask wearing is not a guarantee against the transmission of the flu but can help reduce community spread.

The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older should get a flu shot appropriate for the person’s age and health status (with some exceptions) every season. For the most up-to-date medical advice, please talk to your health care provider about the flu vaccination.

If a loved one requires help with daily personal care activities or is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, we invite you to learn more about MorningStar of Jordan’s assisted living, memory care or respite care in Centennial, CO. An Occupational Therapist Can Be an Important Member of Your Healthcare Team

September 25, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

As we age, we can experience health issues such as a stroke or other disabilities that may benefit from the services of an occupational therapist (OTs).  When asked, many people have no idea what an OT does; while others think they help individuals find work.  Actually, an OT may be an instrumental part of your healthcare team who will work with you to facilitate your best recovery.  If you are wondering what the difference is between a physical therapist (PT) and an OT, a PT focuses on restoring or improving movement, strength, and range of motion; while an OT works on improving the motor skills you need to perform daily tasks.

If a loved one has suffered from a stroke, they may have lost the ability to perform tasks known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), which include bathing, toileting, dressing, eating, grooming, etc.  The job of the OT is to teach the person how to carry out daily, functional activities despite the impairment in order to improve quality of life and maximize independence.

For instance, if the stroke caused damage to one side of the body, an OT focuses on therapies that promote motor recovery.  One common intervention is to limit or constrain the person’s movement on the unaffected arm, while having them use the affected arm to do repetitive or functional tasks.  OTs may also recommend special equipment to improve their patients’ lives such as a wheelchair, walker, electric can opener or toothbrush, a special keyboard for the computer, or eating aids and then teach the person to use them.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Boulder, we provide a wide range of amenities and services to ensure the comfort, wellbeing and safety of our remarkable residents.  In addition, if one of our residents requires OT, PT or other auxiliary services, we have trusted partners we will recommend.  Please visit our website for further information, and email us regarding pricing and availability.

MorningStar of Boulder represents the finest in senior living with our distinct mission statement – “to honor, to value, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents within a beautiful setting. Looking for Assisted Living for Your Parent in the Boulder Area?

September 23, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If your parent lives alone and you are worried that they need more personal daily care than you can provide, it may be time to look into other options.  One of those is assisted living, which focuses on providing residents the daily care they need to help them retain their independence.

Especially now, you want to judiciously make the best, safest choice for your mom or dad.  To help you do so, experts offer a few suggestions of things to think about before you begin your search (obviously you want to respect mom or dad’s preferences and wishes).  They recommend that while you take into account your parent’s immediate needs, you also give some thought to their future needs.  So, find out if the home you are thinking about will be somewhere they can "age in place” and/or if there are limitations in terms of how much care the community provides.

Your questions should include the level of care services they are licensed for as well as their limitations.  For instance, at MorningStar of Boulder our licensing provides us with a range of available care services that makes it possible for us to extend the stay of residents even as health conditions change.

Unless a resident requires round-the-clock nursing (including the management of acute pain), MorningStar is honored, with the partnership of a hospice agency, to care for a resident through end-of-life.  In addition, as a licensed “Directed Level of Care” community, we care for residents within a secure environment (memory care) who, due to compromised cognitive ability, cannot recognize danger and, therefore, cannot respond appropriately and/or cannot express their needs.

If you are considering assisted living, Boulder Colorado’s MorningStar community encourages you to contact us or visit our website for more information about our exceptional community.    We are a true home where the residents are heroes who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect; and MorningStar families know they can trust their loved ones to us.

While we know there are a lot of worrisome stories in the news about COVID-19 among senior living communities, MorningStar of Boulder wants potential families to understand that the care of those beneath our roof is our utmost priority.  To that end we are following protocols set forth by the CDC and other organizations in our fight against the virus; and are confident in our ability to safely accept new residents.

MorningStar of Boulder proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. Keeping a Connection to Your Grandchildren

September 21, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Even without a worldwide pandemic going on around us, many of us live a distance away from our grandkids and we may only get the chance to see them once or twice a year. While long-distance relationships can be tough and make it hard to feel connected, you do not have to resign your to being left out of your grandkids’ lives just because of proximity.

There are several good ideas to help you stay connected even when you are not there in person such as FaceTime or Skype video calls. For little ones who can get restless pretty quickly, be ready to read a picture book, sing songs or tell silly stories. Along with calls for birthdays and holidays, be sure to do it often enough so you keep up with their quickly changing developmental milestones. If they are older, play games together, discuss a shared hobby, exchange jokes and riddles, ask questions, and then really listen.

Another way to stay connected is to start a family Facebook page. This is an easy, inexpensive way for any family member to post current pictures and to share day-to-day news as well as significant events. It also lets other members add comments. Also, do not forget about snail mail. Kids love receiving mail and answering you back is a good way to get them to practice the art of letter writing.

For grandkids who live close by and were used to seeing you several times a week, they may be wondering when they will see you again in person now that you are social distancing. Experts suggest you talk honestly to your grandchildren about the separation and keep reminding them it is only temporary. Tell them you have not forgotten them and that you will keep calling and they can keep calling you.

MorningStar at Jordan is safely accepting assisted living and memory care residents, confident in our protocols and procedures in fighting the coronavirus. Join Us and Advance the MorningStar Mission

September 15, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar Senior Living is a company of servant-minded leaders committed to advancing a mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team’s ability to serve. Our Denver area communities are currently recruiting men and women who understand the significance of serving others to fill various roles within our homes. Openings are available at MorningStar of Arvada; MorningStar at Jordan; MorningStar of Littleton; MorningStar at RidgeGate; MorningStar of Wheat Ridge; and MorningStar of Parker.

We seek men and women with big hearts who would love to work for a company that shares their values and wants to grow professionally as well as personally. As one team member explains, “I first started in assisted living as a part-time job while in EMT school, and was hooked immediately…by the magnitude of need, the powerful sense of family, and the big difference I could make in so many lives. What better career than senior living! In exchange, seniors teach me so much: humility, loyalty, discipline, honor and character. The way they talk about their lives can sound like fiction, but then you look into their eyes and know it is all true.”

From the start, MorningStar’s Founder/CEO, Ken Jaeger, had specific designs on how to foster the ultimate environment for the well-being of seniors as well as an environment where employees would flourish. Thus we are committed to building a team of service professionals who feel called, connected and empowered. Guided by a mission statement that includes investing generously in our team’s ability to serve, we provide all employees training in our proprietary service excellence initiative called “Radiance.” Also, as we provide memory care, team members receive training in Lavender Sky, our holistic approach and philosophy to memory care that helps staff better understand Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

In addition to training and a generous financial compensation package, MorningStar offers a host of other benefits including comprehensive insurance coverage. This includes health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, telehealth coverage, life insurance, and supplemental insurance (disability, accident, critical illness). At MorningStar, we strive to make sure our team members are protected against most of life’s unexpected costs.

Our assisted living jobs in the Denver CO area are diverse and require people with a wide range of skills and education. They include everything from care manager to life enrichment assistant, cook, dishwasher, concierge and housekeeping jobs. MorningStar’s website has a Career page with the full list of current openings, job descriptions and an online application. Please contact us with further questions.

Help Your Elderly Parent Organize Their Medications

August 31, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Chances are if your parents are elderly, they are taking at least one or more prescription medications on a daily basis.  In fact, the Washington Post cites research that estimates, “25 percent of people ages 65 to 69 take at least five prescription drugs to treat chronic conditions, a figure that jumps to nearly 46 percent for those between 70 and 79.”  Polypharmacy refers to the regular use of five or more prescription medications, and puts people more at risk for adverse drug interactions, an area of special concern for the elderly.

Alarming figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state approximately 350,000 people are hospitalized each year after visits to the emergency room because of adverse, or harmful, drug events.  Doctors say while many of these problems are preventable, when you take a number of prescriptions, it can get confusing keeping up with various instructions such as “take on an empty stomach,” and the adverse side effects.

Experts say to help a parent get organized, write down the names of all of the drugs they are taking, the dosage, and if they see several doctors, who prescribed them.  Include any herbal supplements, multi-vitamins and over-the-counter drugs.  The next time they see their primary care doctor, take your list and discuss the reasons for each drug, how long they will be on it, and if any of the drugs are dangerous taken together.  Whenever a new drug is prescribed, ask what it is for and how it should be taken, and read through the paperwork.

Store medications together in a cool, dry location (not the bathroom), discard old, expired medications, and find a pill organizer that makes sense for your parent’s needs.  If they are forgetful, they may need a reminder system.  However, if a parent is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, they should be carefully monitored.

At MorningStar at Jordan, an assisted living and memory care community in Centennial, CO, our residents’ wellbeing and physical health is our primary concern.  This is why one of our many services is medication management that ensures residents take medications properly, and as we even order medications, there is no danger of them running out.  Please visit our website for a virtual tour of our beautiful community and use our email link to inquire about availability and pricing.

MorningStar at Jordan offers the very best in assisted living and memory care with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Please give us a call or visit our website to learn more about our exceptional community in Centennial, CO.

Are You or a Loved One in Need of Daily Care?

August 26, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

If you or a loved one is in need of daily care to ensure your safety and wellbeing, you may be weighing options such as in-home care services versus assisted living.  Most experts suggest a good way to start is to make a list of all the areas in which you or your loved one needs assistance with on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

From a strictly affordable standpoint (we know there is much more to it), the rule of thumb to determine if in-home care services or an assisted living community is less expensive is does the person requires more than 40 hours of paid care a week?  If that’s the case, then assisted living is most likely cheaper.

Also remember that in-home care is a piecemeal approach and each additional service you need adds to the cost of care.  Moreover, in an assisted living community like MorningStar at Jordan, individuals receive 24/7 care from our compassionate, trained care managers in the activities of daily living (ADL).  Another benefit of our community is it is designed to accommodate wheel chairs and other mobile aids as well as has bathrooms equipped with handicap grab bars, and suites equipped with emergency call systems.

Many people get sticker shock when they learn how much they will pay for assisted living, but you need to remember that virtually all your living expenses including food as well as care services are factored in.  No longer will you pay out-of-pocket for home insurance, property taxes, heat, electricity, trash pickup, cable, and Internet service.  In addition, you will not be hit with unexpected repair bills and routine upkeep on your home.

Other services and amenities provided by MorningStar at Jordan include a fitness and wellness center, a movie theatre, beautifully prepared meals served restaurant-style, enrichment activities, and more.  However, we consider our most important asset to be our dedicated staff and their devotion to our residents.  Please visit our website to learn more about our wonderful assisted living and memory care community and all we are doing to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents during COVID-19.

Protect Yourself Against Identity Fraud

August 21, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

To protect yourself against identity fraud, experts say to think about what you have in your wallet, and if it is not something you need to have with you, leave it home.  While you assume a document is safe with you, you also never planned on having your wallet or purse stolen or lost.

The Javelin Strategy & Research company, a financial advisory firm specializing in among other things fraud management and cybersecurity, says the best way to prevent unauthorized access to and the use of private information is to leave items such as passports, Medicare and healthcare insurance cards at home.  Even there, they suggest you keep them locked in a file cabinet or a safe.

Other items experts recommend keeping safe at home is your Social Security card and that should include your child’s or another family member’s.  It is unnecessary to carry it as it poses the biggest risk of your vital information being stolen, and a thief will use it to create a fraudulent identity with the information.  If it is stolen, report it to the Social Security Administration Fraud Hotline (the number is on their website).  Your birth certificate is also an important document to keep out of the hands of others as someone can use it to establish proof of age, citizenship and identity.

In addition, while you do need to carry a passport when traveling out of the country, it is advisable to leave it in the hotel safe when you are out sightseeing.  Make a copy of it in case it does get stolen or lost as it will make it easier to report to the U.S. Department of State.  Finally, while it may seem harmless, do not carry around a list of what you consider your less important passwords as some of them such as email accounts can be used to reset other accounts.  Experts say the bottom line is – if you don’t need it, don’t carry it.

MorningStar at Jordan Offers Loving Memory Care

August 21, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Caring for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia can be a very stressful job.  If you think it is time to consider other care options, rather than feeling disappointed in yourself, remember the job of a caregiver is tough and it may be in yours as well as your spouse, mom, or dad’s best interest to move them into memory care.

If caring for a loved one requires more effort on your part than you are able to give physically or mentally, please reach out and get the help you need as your own health and wellbeing may be aversively impacted. Also, experts stress that while there is no downside to placing someone in memory care in the earlier stages of the disease there could be drawbacks to waiting too long.  Remember the more advanced stages bring with it a significant decline in everyday functioning.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Jordan offers 29 secure suites for the care of residents with memory impairment from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. Our Reflections Neighborhood is staffed by a team of individuals who through purposeful training and experience are dementia care specialists.  Our team understands the unique needs of each resident and delivers that care with compassion and thoughtfulness.  Additionally, every aspect of our home has been designed to accommodate those needs.

Keep in mind as the disease progresses; it becomes very difficult for a family to keep up with the increasing needs as the person requires more and more assistance with daily care activities such as bathing, toileting, and eating.  Other signs of advanced dementia include reduced mobility, wandering, and falling, which may require home modifications.  Professional memory care homes such as ours are equipped to deal with these issues and have 24/7 caregivers available.

So rather than feel like you let your loved down by not caring for them yourself, placing them in a multi-faceted community designed to attend to their changing needs may be the most loving thing you can do.  Please contact MorningStar at Jordan for more information about our outstanding assisted living, memory care and respite care community.

MorningStar at Jordan embodies the finest senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  We strive to provide a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting by creating a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve.  Please contact us to learn more about our exceptional assisted living, memory care and respite care.

Learn More About Osteoarthritis

August 18, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic (long-lasting) joint condition and affects more than 32 million adults in the US.  The disease can cause people to experience pain, stiffness, and swelling and is also referred to as “degenerative joint disease.”

Women are more likely to develop OA than men according to the CDC and risk factors for getting the disease include genetics, obesity, race, injury and overuse of a joint.  It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wear down causing the joints to painfully rub together.

Since there is no cure, the disease is treated in a variety of ways including using over-the-counter pain medications and prescription drugs, physical therapy, engaging in physical activity, weight loss and surgery.  In addition, researchers believe that those with OA can benefit from eating foods known to reduce inflammation because OA is yet another form of inflammation.  Amy Kimberlain, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, explains, eating these foods “gives you a better chance of combating your osteoarthritis symptoms.”

Foods containing flavanols have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and are found in broccoli, kale and berries.  Other anti-inflammatory foods are those high in beta carotene and include carrots, red and orange peppers, sweet potatoes and dark leafy greens such as spinach.  Vitamin C is also important and is found in citrus fruits and winter squash.

For the area’s finest memory care or assisted living, Boulder, Colorado area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar of Boulder.  Our community offers 48 bright suites for assisted living and 46 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. We are currently accepting new residents, confident in our protective protocols.

Get Out and Take a Walk

August 16, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

The Arthritis Foundation says that walking is an excellent aerobic exercise that is easy on the joints and easy to do.  There is no need to drive to the gym or to buy special equipment but rather just lace up your most supportive walking shoes and hit the road.

Experts say that walking offers several benefits such as improving the heart rate, lowing blood pressure and strengthening the heart.  A study from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston found that “women who walk 30 minutes a day may reduce their risk of stroke by 20% and by 40% when they step up their pace.”  They also found that post-menopausal women who walk one to two miles a day can lower their blood pressure by nearly 11 points in 24 weeks.

If you have started walking as a way to help you lose weight and don’t see results yet, keep in mind that walking at a brisk pace burns approximately 200 calories in just 30 minutes, and that adds up over time.  In fact, a study out of the University of Tennessee found that women who walk had less body fat than their counterparts who didn’t walk.

Walking especially offers benefits for seniors such as strengthening muscles, which in turn support the joints.  Stronger muscles in the legs and abdomen reduce the stress we put on our joints, and also help with balance thus reducing our risk for falls.  Movement such as walking circulates the joint fluid and sends nutrients and oxygen to the joint cartilage.

Another bonus of walking according to Michael A. Schwartz, MD, of Plancher Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in New York, is it can stop the loss of bone mass for those with osteoporosis.  In post-menopausal women, just 30 minutes of walking each day reduced the risk of hip fractures by 40%.  Other benefits of walking for older adults appear to include a slowing of cognitive decline, improved sleep and a longer life.

We Need Extraordinary Individuals to Make a Difference in Seniors’ Lives

August 15, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

The MorningStar Senior Living Company began with the goal of providing senior housing that was a true home defined by the human touch. The Founder/CEO, Ken Jaeger, explains his intention was to “re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”  We think MorningStar’s loving homes are living up to this standard; however, we always need extraordinary individuals to help us continue this mission.

Our MorningStar team is honored to be part of a culture defined less by why we do it and more by how we do it.   We call this culture “Radiance,” which is more than just a customer service program but a celebration of selflessness that issues from a deep and sincere place – like a beam of light.  Team members are introduced to Radiance’s precepts upon hire, and each day they are reiterated and strengthened during our daily Huddle.  Examples of Radiance guiding principles include building strong, respectful relationships with seniors, their families and fellow team members; and being attentive to the expressed and unexpressed desires of residents and family members.

Currently MorningStar has open assisted living jobs in Denver, CO and the surrounding area.  We are looking for people with big hearts to fill various roles in both full and part time positions for day, evening, night and weekend shifts.  These include Care Manager, Medication Care Manager/QMAP, Wellness Nurse, Life Enrichment Assistant, Dining Room Server, Housekeeping jobs and more.  Finally, we want to reassure you that during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we are safely hiring and taking every precaution to keep both residents and team members healthy. Please visit our website for more information and apply today to join our loving MorningStar family!

At MorningStar Senior Living, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  We are committed to a foundation built upon honoring God and valuing all seniors, and are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve seniors.  If you have a commitment to service, we encourage you to visit MorningStar’s Career page for information on how to apply for assisted living jobs in Denver CO.

The Link Between Alzheimer’s Disease and Diabetes

August 12, 2020 by MorningStar Senior Living

Studies have suggested a connection between Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes but researchers do not yet fully understand the connection.  Moreover, while not all of the research has confirmed a link, researchers say that people with diabetes, especially type 2, appear to be at higher risk for eventually developing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

One of the things not yet known is whether taking steps to prevent or control diabetes helps to reduce your risk of cognitive decline.  However, we do know that one of the complications of diabetes is damage to the body’s blood vessels as well as the fact that diabetes is one of the risk factors for vascular dementia, which causes a reduced or blocked blood flow to the brain.

Scientists first suspected a connection between Alzheimer’s and diabetes when they realized that the changes in the brain were very similar; and it has been hypothesized that each of these conditions may fuel the damage caused by the other.   With new research, experts hope to get a better understanding of the connection between the two diseases.  “That link may occur as a result of the complex ways that type 2 diabetes affects the ability of the brain and other body tissues to use sugar (glucose) and respond to insulin.”

We also know that diabetes increases the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which may eventually lead to full blown dementia.  In addition, MCI can also appear years earlier in people who later are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

If you are looking for exceptional senior living, MorningStar at Jordan encourages you to contact us or visit our website for more information about our loving community. Along with our 55 assisted living suites, MorningStar at Jordan offers 29 secure memory care suites dedicated to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

MorningStar at Jordan offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Please give us a call or visit our website to learn more about the finest assisted living and memory care in Centennial, CO.
