Protect Yourself From Identity Theft

May 05, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Identity theft is the illegal use of a person’s Social Security number, credit card or other personal information to commit a crime. According to a report from Javelin Strategy & Research, identity fraud cost Americans $43 billion in 2023, and this is likely only a fraction of the true cost as these crimes are often not reported. Given these shocking numbers, financial service providers and consumers should be as vigilant as ever about protecting personal identifying information.

Although financial institutions are doing what they can to protect our personal information from those who wish to fraudulently use it, we can also take steps to protect ourselves. The first tip is to never give your bank account and Social Security numbers to people over the phone. Many scammers claim to be from your bank or a government entity and tell the person they are trying to protect them, when in fact they are doing the opposite. Remember the Social Security office or your bank is not going to call you and ask for your number.

Another way to prevent identity theft is to not reply to phishing emails. These types of emails or text messages can contain official looking logos and promise free services or goods, lottery prizes or government grants. Others may tell you there is a problem with your bank or another company and they need information to settle the account.

The US Government Office of Justice Programs says in the event of having your identity stolen:

  • Place a fraud alert on your credit report.

  • Close out accounts that have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.

  • Report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission.

  • File a report with your local police department.

They recommend keeping a log of all your correspondence and actions taken to report the incident. This should include dates, names and phone numbers of who you contacted or reported the thief to as well as sending documents via certified mail. Keep a record of any expenses incurred in case you are entitled to restitution when the responsible party is caught.

Radishes for Heart Health: Why They’re a Must in Your Diet

April 16, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

When it comes to heart-healthy foods, radishes don’t always get the spotlight—but they should! These colorful root vegetables are packed with nutrients that support cardiovascular health, improve circulation, and help regulate blood pressure. Plus, they’re crisp, refreshing, and easy to add to meals in memory care.

Radishes Help Regulate Blood Pressure

One of the biggest risk factors for heart disease is high blood pressure. Radishes are rich in potassium, a mineral that helps relax blood vessels and keep blood pressure at a healthy level.

  • Potassium balances sodium levels, preventing spikes in blood pressure.

  • Nitrates in radishes improve circulation, helping the heart pump more efficiently.

  • Natural diuretic properties help flush out excess fluids, reducing strain on the cardiovascular system.

Adding potassium-rich foods in assisted living communities like radishes to your diet can support long-term heart health.

Antioxidants That Protect the Heart

Radishes contain powerful antioxidants like anthocyanins and vitamin C, which help reduce inflammation and protect blood vessels. These antioxidants:

  • Prevent oxidative stress, which damages cells and accelerates aging.

  • Support artery health, reducing the risk of plaque buildup.

  • Boost collagen production, keeping blood vessels flexible and strong.

A Natural Way to Lower Cholesterol

High cholesterol levels can increase the risk of heart disease, but radishes contain compounds that may help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) while increasing good cholesterol (HDL).

  • Fiber in radishes binds to cholesterol, helping remove it from the body.

  • Sulfur compounds improve liver function, aiding in cholesterol breakdown.

Radishes and Blood Sugar Control

Heart disease and diabetes are closely linked, making blood sugar regulation a key factor in cardiovascular health. Radishes have a low glycemic index and contain compounds that:

  • Help regulate blood sugar levels, preventing spikes.

  • Increase insulin sensitivity, making it easier for the body to process glucose.

  • Reduce inflammation, which is often higher in people with diabetes.

For residents in assisted living, incorporating radishes into meals can be a simple and delicious way to support both heart and metabolic health.

How to Add More Radishes to Your Diet

Radishes aren’t just for salads—they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways:

  • Raw – Sliced thin and added to sandwiches, tacos, or grain bowls.

  • Roasted – Cooking radishes mellows their peppery bite and brings out a mild sweetness.

  • Pickled – A tangy, probiotic-rich addition to meals.

  • Blended into dips – Try adding radishes to hummus or yogurt-based dips for extra flavor.

Radishes are an easy and nutritious addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle. Whether enjoyed fresh, cooked, or pickled, they offer a natural way to support circulation, blood pressure, and overall cardiovascular health.

How Aging Affects Processing and Remembering New Information

April 04, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan, our beautiful home is designed to provide residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. An Active Social Life is Beneficial for Seniors

March 26, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

The National Council on Aging reports that just as regular preventive medical screenings, vaccinations and dental exams are vital to maintaining our best health, so is protecting our social and mental health. Studies show older adults who say they feel isolated are affected in several negative ways.

Researchers explain there is a connection between those who say they have a good social life with a longer life span. Studies indicate it may be because these are people who appear to handle stress better; something that is linked to cardiovascular disease.

Studies also find seniors who report having a better quality social life were more likely to regularly exercise. Another concerning finding is that isolation is linked to an increase in a person’s risk for anxiety and depression, which are both linked to a higher risk for dementia.

Many seniors living alone have lost a spouse or other close family members and friends and feel very alone. Experts say if this is your situation, they suggest checking with your local senior center, church or library about interesting activities they may sponsor; or look into joining a book club, gardening club or other hobby groups. If you are an animal lover, think about adopting a pet as they provide companionship and a sense of purpose. Volunteer work is another thing that not only keeps you busy but brings more meaning into your life.

One really good way to feel less alone is to move to a senior living community such as MorningStar at RidgeGate. Our beautiful home offers a variety of options for independent living, assisted living or memory care. As a resident you will enjoy an array of onsite amenities, hospitality services and a community of friends.

Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.  Examples include Tai Chi, Sit and Be Fit, Water Exercises, Coffee & Chat, Trivia Games, Mahjong, Men’s Poker Club, Art Class with Julie, Ladies Bible Study, Happy Hours, Movie Nights and much more.

In addition, our Executive Chef creates seasonal menus largely prepared from scratch which are served all day in our full-service dining room. At MorningStar, we feel breaking bread together offers more than nutrition, it also bonds us as family and friends.  Please contact our team to inquire about availability, pricing or to set up a tour.

Plan for a Parent’s Medical Emergency

March 07, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

While many hospital stays are planned, older adults are more likely to require an unexpected trip to the hospital. When you have the luxury of time, it is easy to get prepared with the necessary information a parent needs when admitted to the hospital. It can be a different story if the trip is sudden.

Medical experts say to ensure a loved one gets the proper care, it is important to see to it that the hospital has a complete medical history.  Notes and documents can be completed and gathered now then updated as health changes occur. For starters, the hospital will want a “next of kin” contact for the patient so decide beforehand who that will be.

Now go through the list of medications your parents take and make sure they are all together in one location. In the event of a medical emergency, you will be able to bring all their medications with you to ensure the hospital knows the most up-to-date medications and dosages.

Another thing to gather information on regards your parents’ pre-existing conditions and any recent surgeries or procedures they may have had. Provide the name of their primary care provider; and be sure to let the hospital personnel know if your parent has dementia or any physical limitations.

If the hospital doesn’t already have a copy of your loved one’s advanced directive, also known as a living will, bring one with you. An advanced directive is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken in end-of-life situations when they cannot speak for themselves. Mom or dad may also have a Do-Not-Resuscitate Order, which is another kind of advance directive. It covers not receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if the person’s heart stops or if they stop breathing.

Other information to give to the hospital regards allergies and dietary restrictions. Additionally, make sure your loved one has their cellphone with them as many hospital rooms do not have phones.

If you are considering assisted living or memory care in the Denver area, MorningStar at Jordan may be your answer.  We are in historic Centennial, convenient to restaurants, shopping and other services.  Residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, and a hospitality and care team who feel called and honored to serve seniors.  Please visit our website for more information and to inquire about pricing and availability.

After a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

February 03, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

While a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s for yourself or a loved one is hard to hear, it is important to become informed because what we do early on can help guide future decisions. The Alzheimer’s Association is a great resource to become familiar with and offers topics ranging from Alzheimer’s symptoms to caregiving and medical breakthroughs. It is also one of the biggest fundraising organizations and supports the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” and the “Longest Day” activities.

Experts say it is important to remember you are not alone. Over six million people in the US are living with Alzheimer’s and millions more know someone with the disease. Although everyone experiences the disease in their own unique way, understanding the major stages of the disease helps families navigate this unexpected journey.

Alzheimer’s five distinct stages include: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI); Mild; Moderate; Severe; and Very Severe. Symptoms can vary from person to person but the various stages of Alzheimer’s disease have some common characteristics and it helps to be prepared.

To help negate the feeling of being a complete victim of your circumstances, studies show there are lifestyle changes you can make in the early stages to help improve brain health. These include exercising and eating a healthy diet as well as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. This is also the time to think about future financial, medical and legal decisions.

The early stages are additionally the time to build a support network and to stay engaged with friends and family. Get in the habit of using memory aids such as sticky notes or digital aids for your appointments and activities. If you find you are getting confused paying bills, keeping track of medications or having a hard time making appointments, ask for help.

Be sure to keep up with all your medical appointments including adding an Alzheimer’s specialist to your healthcare team. Ask your doctors about local organizations and services that may be helpful to you and your family now and later.

MorningStar at Jordan in Centennial, Colorado has 29 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Residents receive daily health monitoring, 24/7 care from well-trained staff, with access to licensed nurses and more supportive third-party service providers. Visit our website for more information about our compassionate, loving memory care.

Care Decisions for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

January 10, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, a person’s needs change and it is important to recognize and address those changes with appropriate care. Along with meeting basic needs, experts say care providers should treat the whole person by creating an environment that allows them to feel independent and safe. The Alzheimer’s Association says determining the best care options can be tough and offers some advice on how to ensure the person has the services, programs, and caregivers in place for the best possible quality of life.

The first step to any decision regarding care is to honestly evaluate your loved one’s needs. Also, to whatever degree possible, it is recommended you include them in any decisions. Another thing to remember is during the early stages of the disease the person may be able to live independently but in the middle stages, 24-hour supervision is needed. Additionally, around-the-clock care is much more demanding in the later and end stages.

Primary points to consider include safety, especially in terms of unsupervised cooking, or if the person has a tenacity to wander or needs help with medications. Does the person have medical conditions that need monitoring such as diabetes or a mobility issue? Other problems that may demand more professional care include a person becoming aggressive or needing help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). Finally, consider if the person would benefit from more social interactions and activities.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Jordan offers care to those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  The Reflections Neighborhood is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages their independence while keeping them safe.  Our approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call Lavender Sky and uses a broad range of Montessori-based therapy techniques. Does a Parent Need Help With the Activities of Daily Living?

December 18, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

If you noticed a change in mom or dad or another loved one during a recent visit from out of town, you are not alone. Experts say when families spend time together after a prolonged separation many adult children realize their parents are not doing as well as they thought they were living on their own.

Some of the most obvious signs a parent is having problems caring for him or herself is an unintended loss of weight, change in grooming habits or signs of a fall. The ADLs or Activities of Daily Living are used by experts to evaluate the needs of a person and include personal care such as bathing, dressing and toileting as well as transferring (ability to get in and out of bed or chair), continence and eating.

Other important signs a person is no longer doing well on their own and could benefit from some sort of assistance are based on what experts call the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). These include things like paying bills, taking care of their home, preparing and cooking meals, being able to get out of the home, and socializing.

At MorningStar at Jordan we offer assisted living and memory care. Our assisted living is designed to provide the services residents need to maintain their independence with 24/7 care managers, medication management, access to licensed nurses and more. Moreover, all residents are treated to a delicious, healthy restaurant-style dining service, wellness programs and activities, and sponsored community outings and events.

Our beautiful home has assisted living suites in a range of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom.  In addition, we offer respite care, (short recuperative stays) or trial stays to see if we are a good fit.  For outstanding senior living in Centennial, Colorado, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.

Help Stop Medicare Fraud

December 11, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

The National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association estimates last year’s annual Medicare insurance fraud was around $100 billion, and most likely much higher. While one in five beneficiaries say they have encountered potential Medicare fraud, there are precautions you can take to reduce or eliminate fraudulent claims starting with protecting your Medicare and Social Security cards and numbers like you do your credit cards.

Experts say don’t respond to a call, text or email asking you to provide your Medicare Number. They caution you to only show your Medicare card or give out your number to your doctor or people you know who should have it. To determine if you are a victim of fraud, examine your Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) or claims statements carefully for any discrepancies or additions of services or charges you did not receive. Another common scam is to try to get Medicare beneficiaries to sign up for drug plans that are not approved by Medicare.

If your Medicare card is stolen or you suspect fraud, report it as soon as possible to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). It is important to know Medicare will never call to sell you anything or visit you at home. They will only call or contact you in limited situations to ask for personal information. One such person may be the agent who helped you sign up for a particular Medicare program or drug plan. You also may be contacted by Medicare if you left your number to report fraud or inconsistencies with your MSNs.

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living or memory care, Denver area MorningStar at Jordan offers a true home distinguished by comfort, wellness and love. This is made possible through a dedicated team who understand how to provide residents with a quality-of-life other communities simply cannot match. Care Services at MorningStar of Boulder

October 04, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

For outstanding assisted living in Boulder, CO, seniors and their families are encouraged to consider MorningStar, the perfect community to age in place comfortably and safely.  By defining health and wellbeing holistically, our home provides services and programming that support the whole person – body, mind and spirit.   Together our Life Enrichment programs and Wellness Care services complement one another to ensure each resident gets the best care.

As a testament to the full scope of our services, we look for creative solutions within the full authority of our license through the Department of Health to help extend the stay of the resident if they experience changes in their health.  These solutions can yield a higher quality of memory care at a lower cost to the family and provide a welcomed continuity of care for the resident.

We are also proud that our assisted living residents benefit from our Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.  This centralized mobile station ensures accurate, onsite assessments, care planning, incident tracking, wound care, behavior management and eMARs (electronic medication administration records).  In addition, record keeping is not only accurate but legible as well as offers complete demographic and medical information at hand.  It also enhances confidentiality of residents’ data.

Our broad care services include five levels of care in memory care for assisted living residents based on a point system and determined after a thorough evaluation with our Wellness Director.  Residents have 24-hour care managers and access to a licensed nurse either onsite or on-call 24/7.  MorningStar of Boulder’s services also include medication management by certified med care managers as well as care planning reviews and scheduled health and wellness evaluations.

To address specific health needs, we have partnered with EmpowerMe Wellness.  They provide on-site access to wellness programs, personal training and physical, occupational and speech therapy services to help residents maintain their highest level of independence for as long as possible.

Please contact us or visit our website for more information. Our community includes 48 stylish suites for assisted living and another 46 memory care suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Compassionate Memory Care in Centennial, Colorado

September 11, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

MorningStar at Jordan’s goal is to provide the best senior living in the area, which includes compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia right through to the most advanced stages.  We understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of a dementia disease.  The path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey.

In addition to MorningStar at Jordan’s assisted living option, our Reflections Neighborhood consists of 29 memory care suites.  The area is specifically designed to be secure but still allow residents the freedom to move safely about their spacious surroundings.  Also, given the nature of dementia, residents pay one price for their suite and their care regardless of the level of memory loss.

As dementia care experts, our unique approach and philosophy to caring for those afflicted with the disease is called “Lavender Sky.”  We know the essence of the person remains despite the level of memory loss, and our job is to nurture and support the individual by finding ways to calm or stimulate as the situation demands.  Lavender Sky provides the path for us to enter, embrace, and explore the “purple world” of memory loss, and to cross over the physical, emotional, and relational boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

Every aspect of our home is designed to provide the comfort, wellness and safety our special residents require, including mealtimes.  We know those suffering from memory loss can sometimes have compromised abilities at the table.  We address this by providing a selection of finger foods, texture-modified diets (mechanical soft and puréed, thickened liquids), and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look. Please see our website or contact us for more information.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest assisted living and memory care in Centennial, CO.

Long-Term Care for a Loved One With Memory Impairment

August 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

For many people suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, there often comes a time when home care is not enough and the person would benefit from long-term care in a residential setting. Of course when that time comes, you want the finest care so it is important to understand what the community offers and whether it meets the needs of your loved one.

Independent living communities, which offer things like meals, transportation, amenities and social activities do not have the ability to care for someone in the middle or advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. This type of community is only appropriate for those in the early stages of the disease who can still care for themselves.

Assisted living communities offer supportive care and provide an alternative between independent living and nursing homes. However, if you are looking at assisted living, ask if they have a dedicated memory care area for those with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association understands it is a difficult decision to move a loved one into residential care but at a certain point they say it may be best for the person and their family. As the disease advances, 24/7 supervision is necessary to ensure the person’s safety; and this level of care can take a real toll on a family caregiver. Moreover, as a caregiver, it is important to consider your own health and whether you are neglecting other responsibilities that are also important. Another thing to remember is the social setting and structure of a memory care community might prove to be good for the person.

To decide on a memory care community, it helps to visit a few places to determine which one would be best for your loved one. Experts recommend visiting during mealtime or activity time. You will also want to know how the community involves families in creating care plans; and what is the procedure to inform families of changes in the person’s condition or care needs.

Other important details to ask about include programs and activities the person will participate in as well as what is the ratio of staff to residents. Be sure to notice if the community is well-kept and that residents appear clean and well-groomed.

At MorningStar at Jordan, we offer experienced, compassionate care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases right through to the most advanced stages.  We provide our tender residents a safe, comforting physical environment, trained caregivers, daily health monitoring, meaningful activities, wellness programs and more. Please contact us for more information and to set up a tour.

Bacteria That Cause Gum Disease May Increase Risk for Alzheimer's

August 09, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Researchers at Tuft University reported a link between gum disease, also known as periodontitis and periodontal disease, to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontitis is a bacterial infection within the soft tissue of the mouth, and “about 47.2% of U.S. adults over 30 and 70% over 65 have gum disease,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The study, which was done with mice, discovered the correlation, but researchers hope the findings can be used to someday help reduce cases of Alzheimer’s disease. The authors cite Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a bacterium that causes gum disease and is already linked to kidney disease, diabetes and coronary issues to be the problem.

The lead author, Dr. Jake Jinkun Chen, professor of periodontology and director of the Division of Oral Biology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine explains the purpose of the study is to identify and characterize the association of induced periodontal disease with Alzheimer’s disease. He says as F. nucleatum generates “inflammation both locally and systemically, it affects the Alzheimer’s disease phenotype, as Alzheimer’s itself is an inflammatory disease.” Additionally, since the bacteria migrate and penetrate the brain, it can worsen the symptoms and signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers plan further studies in humans and say although there is not a proven link yet; good oral health benefits our overall health. They also say to decrease our risk for Alzheimer’s, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.

As Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease progresses, a loved one may need more care than they can get living at home. When the time comes for memory care, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Jordan, a senior community in Centennial, Colorado offering specialized memory care for individuals with memory impairment diseases.
