Key Medicare Terms for Informed Decisions

August 25, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Enrolling for and/or making changes to a Medicare plan can be confusing. Medical News Today’s website states that learning how the health program works can help avoid errors, including missing enrollment periods, overlooking costs, and choosing unsuitable plans.

To help you avoid costly mistakes that result in you not getting the best coverage, it is important to understand what you are signing up for. One easy way to start is to learn Medicare terms.

Medical News Today explains the following terms:

Out-of-pocket cost: This is the amount a person must pay for care when Medicare does not pay the total amount or offer coverage. Costs can include deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and premiums.

Premium: This is the amount of money someone pays each month for Medicare coverage.

Deductible: This is an annual amount a person must spend out of pocket within a certain period before Medicare starts to fund their treatments.

Coinsurance: This is the percentage of treatment costs that a person must self-fund. For Medicare Part B, coinsurance is 20%.

Copayment: This is a fixed dollar amount a person with insurance pays when receiving certain treatments. For Medicare, this usually applies to prescription drugs.

Additionally, it is important to understand Medicare plans. Original Medicare is Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Medicare Advantage is known as Part C and is managed by private insurers. Part D offers separate drug coverage. Medigap is a supplemental plan that helps pay costs such as deductibles, premiums and coinsurance not covered by Original Medicare. If you have further questions, visit Medicare.gov.

Challenge Your Brain With Puzzles and Games

August 18, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

While there is a long-held belief that memory loss and aging are inevitable, it is now known we can help keep our brains sharp. Studies have shown our brains continue to build new connections, and engaging in activities that challenge us can lead to sustained brain development and offer new ways to approach challenges.

The most effective puzzles and games linked to a reduced risk of dementia are those requiring critical thinking, problem-solving and memory recall. Patrick Porter, Ph.D, a neuroscience expert and founder of BrainTap, explains “These activities stimulate the brain by challenging it to find patterns, make connections, and think creatively. They require mental flexibility and encourage the brain to adapt and reorganize neural networks, enhancing cognitive reserve.”

To get the most benefit from mental activities, the experts say it is best to vary the type of games we play. Shifting from games that rely on speed, rapid decision making or memory help strengthen and tap into multiple ways to engage the brain. Studies show it is important to keep challenging ourselves and pushing the bar toward more difficult activities. Another thing to keep in mind are the studies linking socialization to a decrease in dementia. So before you jump on the computer for some brain games, think about gathering a group of friends to play a game of trivia or piece together a puzzle.

Is Fatigue Affecting Your Daily Activities?

August 04, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

You may be one of the millions of Americans who complain about feeling a sense of fatigue that makes it difficult to get on with life. The Harvard Medical school explains there is a distinction between just feeling tired and fatigue, which “includes components that are physical (weariness or weakness), mental (lack of concentration and sharpness), and emotional (lack of motivation or boredom).”

Some of the causes of fatigue may be easier to identify such as lingering symptoms from an illness like COVID or the flu, or side effects from medical treatments like chemotherapy. Even some medications are known to cause tiredness. When fatigue is ongoing and interferes with day-to-day activities, doctors say you should consult with your healthcare provider.

Your doctor can look for things like anemia as it can be a reason for a decline in energy. It occurs when a person’s blood has too few red blood cells, or cells without enough hemoglobin that is used to transport oxygen throughout the bloodstream. Heart disease is another cause of fatigue as it can make the heart pump less efficiently and result in fluid build-up in the lungs. This can lead to a reduction in the amount of oxygen able to circulate into the lungs and heart.

Other causes of fatigue include depression and insomnia that often go hand in hand. However, antidepressants, which are often prescribed to treat depression as well as certain blood pressure medications and antihistamines, can increase tiredness.

Experts suggest consulting a doctor about fatigue related to medical or mental health issues, but there are self-help methods to manage everyday fatigue. The first is to get into the habit of exercising. Next watch what you eat and try to reduce your consumption of fried and over-processed foods. Following a low glycemic diet may help boost energy. Other tips include staying hydrated, reducing alcohol and watching how much coffee you drink each day.

Products Designed to Improve Quality of Life for Seniors

July 21, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

It seems as if every day the market offers more and more tech devices, gadgets and mobility aids designed to keep older adults moving and give them as independent a lifestyle as possible. Mobility aids include everything from canes and walkers to fall prevention items, wheelchairs, personal scooters, powered wheelchairs, transfer devices and more. The range of products is huge as in the example of walkers. While there are two basic types, standard or rolling (sometimes called rollators); the selection is varied and includes many options and add-ons such as seats and storage baskets.

Technology devices include a variety of products like health monitoring systems and cognitive aids to keep seniors safer and more connected. Today’s SOS alerts systems and fall detectors enable seniors to get help when and where they need it. Amplification devices make it easier to hear the TV, and phones are designed to be easy to use and see. Electronic medication reminders help seniors stay on track with daily meds.

Products such as shower chairs, grab bars and raised toilet seats can make a bathroom safer for seniors and help avoid falls. Ergonomic, adaptive kitchens tools are designed for seniors with arthritis and weak hand grip strength. These include specially designed bottle, cap and jar openers; and scooped plates and bowls to reduce movement.

Adaptive, light-weight tools for gardening enthusiasts also make it easier to dig in the soil and reduce hand and wrist fatigue while weeding. Raised beds and trellises eliminate the need to get down on the ground, and a rolling gardening chair cart makes it easier to get around. Thick kneeling pads are designed to more comfortably knee or sit on the ground, a few even offer cup holders and pockets for tools. Check out the Internet for other useful items.

When to Consider a Memory Care Community

July 11, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

A Place for Mom’s website explains how many people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia can live independently with or without the help of in-home caregivers or family members. However, they also stress there may come a time when the disease progresses to a stage where the person’s safety and physical well-being is in jeopardy and more care is needed.

As a person with Alzheimer’s may have good days and bad, it can be hard to tell if they would be better served in a memory care community. Experts say signs include: has their appearance changed? Do they look unkempt and have they lost weight due to forgetting to eat? Do they appear agitated and confused? Are they unable to carry on a conversation?

Your loved one’s healthcare provider can help you decide if it is time for memory care. Dr. Philip Branshaw, an internal medicine specialist in Batavia, Illinois, says, “When talking about memory care . . . I’ll center the talk around [the person’s] ability to perform their activities of daily living.”

A Place for Mom says to gauge a senior’s abilities and safety, your doctor may ask if they:

  • Get lost on routes they take frequently, such as going to the grocery store or taking a walk around the neighborhood

  • Have trouble remembering to eat or drink

  • Are forgetting to take their medication appropriately

  • Are struggling to bathe regularly or get dressed as usual

  • Had a fall or been to the emergency room recently

  • Leave the stove on after preparing food

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Jordan provides compassionate memory care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic approach to memory care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  Beginning with dedicated caregivers to activities, programs and meals tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Brain Games Boost Mental Fitness

July 07, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Over the last couple of decades, researchers have found brain-training games may help improve attention levels, logic skills, and memory as well as enhance cognitive function in healthy subjects. Shaheen Lakhan, MD. Ph.D. FAAN, a physician-scientist and clinical development specialist and founding neurology department chair and curricular dean at California University of Science and Medicine writes the following: “The brain is just like a muscle – it thrives on exercise! As a neurologist, I’m thrilled by the incredible potential of brain games to help people flex their mental muscles, activating underused brain circuits to sharpen cognition and skills like focus, speed, and memory.”

Experts say effective brain games include Sudoku and crossword puzzles. With crossword puzzles, cognitive skills used include recollecting past verbal knowledge and memories. Sudoku relies on short-term memory, which is often one the first sign of Alzheimer’s disease, and requires the player to look ahead to plan out subsequent moves.

Android and iOS offer apps for brain games that are either free, include in-app purchases or require a subscription to open more games. One game is Elevate that centers on reading, writing, speaking and math; and allows you to customize training on areas you wish to focus on. Another game, Luminosity, was involved in a study that showed people who played the games for “15 minutes a day at least seven days a week for three weeks experienced improved attention and motor speed.”

MorningStar at Jordan is a beautiful 55+ community offering assisted living and memory care in Centennial, Colorado.   Our focus is on providing everything residents need to live their best life with resort-style amenities, best-in-class dining, and an array of senior care and hospitality services. Enhance Overall Health by Prioritizing High-Quality Nutrition

June 09, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

While losing weight is tough, for many of us, the real battle is keeping the weight off. Caroline Thomason, RD, CDCES, a dietitian and diabetes educator based in Washington, D.C., explains there is a growing body of evidence showing that when we focus on higher-quality nutrition, not only does our weight improve but also our health. Changing to a diet with more vegetables and fruits means you will take in fewer calories than you previously did, allowing weight loss to naturally take place. An improved diet results in better health.

One of the biggest problems with “dieting” is that a person too often focuses on calorie content without regard to nutritional value.” Experts say this makes sticking to a calorie restrictive diet harder. Once we include nutritional foods in our day-to-day diet, it makes us feel fuller and even lets us eat more while taking in fewer calories.

Another thing about a life-long nutritional diet filled with fruits and vegetables, plant-based proteins and whole foods is it promotes better health and quality of life as you age. Research shows people who eat better have a lower risk of many chronic diseases. Furthermore, dietitians say it is never too late to adopt healthier eating patterns. By simply changing diet, many people can lower high-blood pressure and cholesterol as well as reverse diabetes.

Doctors agree adopting good eating habits that are permanent is what counts rather than short-term diets. Along with diet; exercise, sleep and stress management are all important for better health.

MorningStar at Jordan is a 55+ community in Centennial, Colorado. Our beautiful home offers assisted living residents a lifestyle of wellbeing, community and security. Along with nutritious daily meals tailored to the changing health needs of older adults, we have a broad range of onsite amenities, wellness programs and activities. In addition, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides all the services required to meet the needs of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

When is it Time to Consider Memory Care?

June 04, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

The US News & World Reports, states, “More than 6 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s disease according to the Alzheimer’s Association. More than 11 million family members care for someone with dementia, while others with memory issues live in assisted living communities, nursing homes or memory care units.”

The decline of a person with Alzheimer’s disease slowly worsens over time; and it is not always easy for family members to recognize their loved one needs additional support for both their safety and daily living activities. Healthcare providers say a community setting may be called for if the person exhibits subtle behavioral changes in personality, declining health and an increase in confusion. Incontinence is another reason families turn to memory care. Moreover, the family caregiver should be considered as increasing needs can lead to caregiver burnout. Also, memory care provides peace of mind if your loved one is no longer answering their phone or replying to emails.

For some, Alzheimer’s can bring with it dramatic and challenging behavior changes. Your gentle spirited mom or dad may start to exhibit aggressive behaviors that are difficult to deal with. A generally outgoing person may withdraw and avoid socializing. Hygiene can be hit and miss, and often the person no longer changes clothes or brushes their hair or teeth.

Other behaviors that change over time can make family caregiving increasingly difficult and time-consuming. Physical safety concerns such as wandering, forgetting to turn off the stove, burning themselves or still driving can be a constant worry.

Assisted living communities offering specialized memory care like MorningStar of Boulder are equipped to handle these challenges. To begin with, the physical makeup of our distinct Reflections Neighborhood is designed to protect residents from harm and includes secure doors and easy-to-navigate surroundings.

All MorningStar’s compassionate, dedicated team receive training to provide the best care.  In addition, memory care residents are encouraged to participate in a variety of purposeful activities that include music, life skills, art, entertainment and exercise as well as special events and outings. We invite you to schedule a tour to experience firsthand our philosophy and commitment to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Protect Yourself From Identity Theft

May 05, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Identity theft is the illegal use of a person’s Social Security number, credit card or other personal information to commit a crime. According to a report from Javelin Strategy & Research, identity fraud cost Americans $43 billion in 2023, and this is likely only a fraction of the true cost as these crimes are often not reported. Given these shocking numbers, financial service providers and consumers should be as vigilant as ever about protecting personal identifying information.

Although financial institutions are doing what they can to protect our personal information from those who wish to fraudulently use it, we can also take steps to protect ourselves. The first tip is to never give your bank account and Social Security numbers to people over the phone. Many scammers claim to be from your bank or a government entity and tell the person they are trying to protect them, when in fact they are doing the opposite. Remember the Social Security office or your bank is not going to call you and ask for your number.

Another way to prevent identity theft is to not reply to phishing emails. These types of emails or text messages can contain official looking logos and promise free services or goods, lottery prizes or government grants. Others may tell you there is a problem with your bank or another company and they need information to settle the account.

The US Government Office of Justice Programs says in the event of having your identity stolen:

  • Place a fraud alert on your credit report.

  • Close out accounts that have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.

  • Report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission.

  • File a report with your local police department.

They recommend keeping a log of all your correspondence and actions taken to report the incident. This should include dates, names and phone numbers of who you contacted or reported the thief to as well as sending documents via certified mail. Keep a record of any expenses incurred in case you are entitled to restitution when the responsible party is caught.

If you are considering assisted living in Boulder, CO, MorningStar may be your answer. Radishes for Heart Health: Why They’re a Must in Your Diet

April 16, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

When it comes to heart-healthy foods, radishes don’t always get the spotlight—but they should! These colorful root vegetables are packed with nutrients that support cardiovascular health, improve circulation, and help regulate blood pressure. Plus, they’re crisp, refreshing, and easy to add to meals in memory care.

Radishes Help Regulate Blood Pressure

One of the biggest risk factors for heart disease is high blood pressure. Radishes are rich in potassium, a mineral that helps relax blood vessels and keep blood pressure at a healthy level.

  • Potassium balances sodium levels, preventing spikes in blood pressure.

  • Nitrates in radishes improve circulation, helping the heart pump more efficiently.

  • Natural diuretic properties help flush out excess fluids, reducing strain on the cardiovascular system.

Adding potassium-rich foods in assisted living communities like radishes to your diet can support long-term heart health.

Antioxidants That Protect the Heart

Radishes contain powerful antioxidants like anthocyanins and vitamin C, which help reduce inflammation and protect blood vessels. These antioxidants:

  • Prevent oxidative stress, which damages cells and accelerates aging.

  • Support artery health, reducing the risk of plaque buildup.

  • Boost collagen production, keeping blood vessels flexible and strong.

A Natural Way to Lower Cholesterol

High cholesterol levels can increase the risk of heart disease, but radishes contain compounds that may help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) while increasing good cholesterol (HDL).

  • Fiber in radishes binds to cholesterol, helping remove it from the body.

  • Sulfur compounds improve liver function, aiding in cholesterol breakdown.

Radishes and Blood Sugar Control

Heart disease and diabetes are closely linked, making blood sugar regulation a key factor in cardiovascular health. Radishes have a low glycemic index and contain compounds that:

  • Help regulate blood sugar levels, preventing spikes.

  • Increase insulin sensitivity, making it easier for the body to process glucose.

  • Reduce inflammation, which is often higher in people with diabetes.

For residents in assisted living, incorporating radishes into meals can be a simple and delicious way to support both heart and metabolic health.

How to Add More Radishes to Your Diet

Radishes aren’t just for salads—they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways:

  • Raw – Sliced thin and added to sandwiches, tacos, or grain bowls.

  • Roasted – Cooking radishes mellows their peppery bite and brings out a mild sweetness.

  • Pickled – A tangy, probiotic-rich addition to meals.

  • Blended into dips – Try adding radishes to hummus or yogurt-based dips for extra flavor.

Radishes are an easy and nutritious addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle. Whether enjoyed fresh, cooked, or pickled, they offer a natural way to support circulation, blood pressure, and overall cardiovascular health.

How Aging Affects Processing and Remembering New Information

April 04, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan, our beautiful home is designed to provide residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. Along with inviting common areas both inside and out, we offer a range of amenities and wellness programs to promote a healthy and engaged lifestyle. Please contact us or visit our website to see what sets us apart from other assisted living communities and why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

An Active Social Life is Beneficial for Seniors

March 26, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

The National Council on Aging reports that just as regular preventive medical screenings, vaccinations and dental exams are vital to maintaining our best health, so is protecting our social and mental health. Studies show older adults who say they feel isolated are affected in several negative ways.

Researchers explain there is a connection between those who say they have a good social life with a longer life span. Studies indicate it may be because these are people who appear to handle stress better; something that is linked to cardiovascular disease.

Studies also find seniors who report having a better quality social life were more likely to regularly exercise. Another concerning finding is that isolation is linked to an increase in a person’s risk for anxiety and depression, which are both linked to a higher risk for dementia.

Many seniors living alone have lost a spouse or other close family members and friends and feel very alone. Experts say if this is your situation, they suggest checking with your local senior center, church or library about interesting activities they may sponsor; or look into joining a book club, gardening club or other hobby groups. If you are an animal lover, think about adopting a pet as they provide companionship and a sense of purpose. Volunteer work is another thing that not only keeps you busy but brings more meaning into your life.

One really good way to feel less alone is to move to a senior living community such as MorningStar at RidgeGate. Our beautiful home offers a variety of options for independent living, assisted living or memory care. As a resident you will enjoy an array of onsite amenities, hospitality services and a community of friends.

Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.  Examples include Tai Chi, Sit and Be Fit, Water Exercises, Coffee & Chat, Trivia Games, Mahjong, Men’s Poker Club, Art Class with Julie, Ladies Bible Study, Happy Hours, Movie Nights and much more.

In addition, our Executive Chef creates seasonal menus largely prepared from scratch which are served all day in our full-service dining room. At MorningStar, we feel breaking bread together offers more than nutrition, it also bonds us as family and friends.  Please contact our team to inquire about availability, pricing or to set up a tour.

Plan for a Parent’s Medical Emergency

March 07, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

While many hospital stays are planned, older adults are more likely to require an unexpected trip to the hospital. When you have the luxury of time, it is easy to get prepared with the necessary information a parent needs when admitted to the hospital. It can be a different story if the trip is sudden.

Medical experts say to ensure a loved one gets the proper care, it is important to see to it that the hospital has a complete medical history.  Notes and documents can be completed and gathered now then updated as health changes occur. For starters, the hospital will want a “next of kin” contact for the patient so decide beforehand who that will be.

Now go through the list of medications your parents take and make sure they are all together in one location. In the event of a medical emergency, you will be able to bring all their medications with you to ensure the hospital knows the most up-to-date medications and dosages.

Another thing to gather information on regards your parents’ pre-existing conditions and any recent surgeries or procedures they may have had. Provide the name of their primary care provider; and be sure to let the hospital personnel know if your parent has dementia or any physical limitations.

If the hospital doesn’t already have a copy of your loved one’s advanced directive, also known as a living will, bring one with you. An advanced directive is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken in end-of-life situations when they cannot speak for themselves. Mom or dad may also have a Do-Not-Resuscitate Order, which is another kind of advance directive. It covers not receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if the person’s heart stops or if they stop breathing.

Other information to give to the hospital regards allergies and dietary restrictions. Additionally, make sure your loved one has their cellphone with them as many hospital rooms do not have phones.

If you are considering assisted living or memory care in the Denver area, MorningStar at Jordan may be your answer.  We are in historic Centennial, convenient to restaurants, shopping and other services.  Residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, and a hospitality and care team who feel called and honored to serve seniors.  Please visit our website for more information and to inquire about pricing and availability.

After a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

February 03, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

While a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s for yourself or a loved one is hard to hear, it is important to become informed because what we do early on can help guide future decisions. The Alzheimer’s Association is a great resource to become familiar with and offers topics ranging from Alzheimer’s symptoms to caregiving and medical breakthroughs. It is also one of the biggest fundraising organizations and supports the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” and the “Longest Day” activities.

Experts say it is important to remember you are not alone. Over six million people in the US are living with Alzheimer’s and millions more know someone with the disease. Although everyone experiences the disease in their own unique way, understanding the major stages of the disease helps families navigate this unexpected journey.

Alzheimer’s five distinct stages include: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI); Mild; Moderate; Severe; and Very Severe. Symptoms can vary from person to person but the various stages of Alzheimer’s disease have some common characteristics and it helps to be prepared.

To help negate the feeling of being a complete victim of your circumstances, studies show there are lifestyle changes you can make in the early stages to help improve brain health. These include exercising and eating a healthy diet as well as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. This is also the time to think about future financial, medical and legal decisions.

The early stages are additionally the time to build a support network and to stay engaged with friends and family. Get in the habit of using memory aids such as sticky notes or digital aids for your appointments and activities. If you find you are getting confused paying bills, keeping track of medications or having a hard time making appointments, ask for help.

Be sure to keep up with all your medical appointments including adding an Alzheimer’s specialist to your healthcare team. Ask your doctors about local organizations and services that may be helpful to you and your family now and later.

MorningStar at Jordan in Centennial, Colorado has 29 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Residents receive daily health monitoring, 24/7 care from well-trained staff, with access to licensed nurses and more supportive third-party service providers.
