The MorningStar of Boulder Team Has a Felt Calling to Serve

October 23, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Every one of our new employees are introduced to the precepts of Radiance, our proprietary program that guides the excellent service we are so proud of at MorningStar of Boulder.    In addition, Radiance’s principles are reiterated and strengthened throughout the entire team during our daily Huddle.

As we seek people who have a felt calling to serve, our team understands that life’s highest rewards come from serving others, which is why we also volunteer and serve several other non-profit organizations including the Alzheimer’s Association.  Every year our community looks forward to participating in sponsored events such as the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” The 5K Walk is the world’s largest event and helps to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.  Along with many of MorningStar’s staff, we are joined by residents and family member as walkers, runners, exhibitors, and sponsors.  Each year we not only have fun with our planned activities but also raise much needed funds for such an important cause.

Another big event supporting the Alzheimer’s Association is our participation in the “Longest Day” celebration.  Held on on the first day of summer solstice and the longest day of the year, our community joins thousands of people across the country to show their love and support of those affected by Alzheimer's disease. Past activities have included balloon releases and plantings, games, activities, special foods and movies.

If you are looking for senior retirement living in the Boulder area, visit our website to learn more about our compassionate, loving community.  Offering 48 assisted living suites that include spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans, you are sure to find one that meets your needs.   We also have 46 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment from Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia.

Seniors Benefit from Strength Training

October 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Think you are too old to pump iron?  Research shows that for the majority of seniors who still do exercise, their regimen only includes aerobic exercises such as walking, biking, jogging or swimming.  While these types of exercises are important to our overall health, an article published by the U.S. News & World Report explains why seniors can benefit from strength training.  They state that fitness professionals as well as healthcare providers report everyone from 18 to 80 needs to do both cardiovascular and strengthening exercises.

Research suggests that the benefits go beyond just building better tone and an improved shape as studies link “not just aerobic exercise but strength training with a reduced risk of death from all causes.”  This is why the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommends that even older adults follow their guidelines and do some level of strength training at least two days a week.  As Dr. Jennifer Kraschnewski, an associate professor of medicine, pediatrics and public health sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine points out “ very good evidence [is available] to show that 80-year-olds are just as able to improve their muscle mass as 50-year-olds. And this can be done reliably over a very short period of time – something as short as two to three months."

At MorningStar at Jordan, we provide quality, all-encompassing senior living with our range of wellness programs and activities that support and engage our residents including physical activities designed for all levels of fitness.  One look at our monthly calendar and you will see a variety of exercise classes available daily along with many other entertaining and meaningful programs.   Please visit our website to learn about our unique and loving assisted living home.

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living home in the area.

Time to Get Your Flu Shot

October 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Along with fall’s changing leaves and cooler temperatures, it also signals the start of the flu season, which means it’s time to get your annual flu shot.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older gets a seasonal flu vaccine each year by the end of October.

The flu season begins to increase in October, and typically peaks between December and February but can last as late as May.  Also as it takes about two weeks after your vaccination for the protective antibodies to develop, it is important to get it early in the season. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the various viruses that are in the vaccine.

The CDC stresses it is especially important for people 65 years and older to get a flu shot as they are at greater risk for serious complications that can result in hospitalization and, in some cases, even death.   This is because seniors’ immune systems are generally weaker than those of younger adults. Complications of flu can include: bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.  The CDC also recommends people 65 years and older get a flu shot approved for their age group and not a nasal spray vaccine.

Additionally you need to know that last year’s flu shot will not protect you from this season’s flu virus.  Not only has your immunity from last year’s shot started to wane, but each year the viruses change so you need the protection of the new antibodies.  The flu shot you receive this year has been designed to protect against the flu viruses that researcher have determined will be the most common in the 2019- 2020 flu season.

Most Elderly Adults Have Hearing Loss

October 18, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Commucation Disorders (NIDCD) about one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those 75 and older have difficultly hearing.  This can make it hard for seniors to “understand and follow a doctor's advice, to respond to warnings, and to hear doorbells and alarms.”  Difficultly hearing also makes it hard for many elderly people to follow and engage in conversation with their family and friends.

Known as presbycusis, hearing loss in seniors generally occurs gradually and initially affects the ability to hear higher pitched sounds.  The person may notices that while the speech is loud enough, it sounds as if the talker is mumbling. The condition is commonly caused by the loss of nerve hair cells in the Cochlea or the deterioration of other parts of the inner ear or auditory nerves.   Age-related hearing loss typically affect both ears equally.

In some cases, health conditions more common among the elderly such as high blood pressure and diabetes can additionally affect hearing.  Furthermore, certain medications including some types of chemotherapy drugs can cause hearing loss.

The NIDCD has a checklist to help seniors determine if they are experiencing hearing problems.  Questions include: Do you feel frustrated when talking to members of your family because you have difficulty hearing them?; Do you have difficulty hearing when someone speaks in a whisper?; and Do you feel restricted or limited by a hearing problem?

Another cause of hearing loss can be the result of long-term exposure to loud noise and is one of the most common occupational hazards.  The exposure damages the sensory hair cells in the ears, which do not grow back. It is estimated that at least 10 million Americans have irreversible hearing loss due to long-term exposure to noise.

Seniors should discuss any hearing problems with their health care provider who will refer them to an otolaryngologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, throat, and neck.  The otolarynogogist will test your hearing, and if a problem is found, will refer you on to an audiologist who will determine the type and degree of hearing loss. Either they or a hearing aid specialist will fit you for a hearing aid.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Boulder, “to honor, to serve, to invest”, sets us apart from other assisted living companies. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the best assisted living and memory care in Boulder, Colorado.

Making Assisted Living More Affordable

October 16, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar at Jordan is a graciously appointed assisted living home located in historic Centennial in the south-central area of Metro Denver.  We proudly offer 55 private assisted living suites as well as 29 secure suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

For residents in assisted living, your monthly fee is based on the size of the suite, location within the building and view, and your level of care (we offer 5 levels) as determined by a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director.  The fee for memory care residents is all-inclusive (suite and care) and is one packaged price.

To help families find ways to make assisted living more affordable, we provide information on a variety of innovative financial options and other often under-used benefits.  One such example is to make veterans aware of the “Aid & Attendance” pension benefit.  We refer them to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs where they can find out if they qualify.

Another resource to help pay for assisted living is Long-term Care insurance.  To see what expenses, and/or up to what amounts, will be covered under your policy, review your Benefits Summary section to learn about the specifics of coverage, daily benefit, policy limit, and elimination period.

Many people also overlook life insurance policies as a source for funds.  However, in some cases, whole life and universal life policies can be used to raise funds through cash surrender, death benefit loans and other means.  We recommend consulting your accountant or tax advisor for information on any tax liabilities you may incur.

Please visit our website to learn about pricing and availability or to set up a tour to see our exceptional senior living community.  We look forward to meeting potential residents and their families.

How Much Do You Know About Today’s Assisted Living Communities?

October 12, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Many people think they already know everything there is to know about senior living communities – “a place where old people go to die.”  This could not be further from the truth.  As the largest assisted living referral service, a Place for Mom explains, “senior assisted living is a viable option that can enhance your quality of life by empowering you to live that life the way you want to.”  Today’s vibrant communities include independent living for active seniors, assisted living for those needing help with personal daily care activities, and memory care.

In fact, assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Jordan are specifically designed to give aging adults the opportunity to maintain their independence while providing access to the assistance they need.  In addition, they get the benefit of built-in companionship as well as a range of meaningful wellness programs and activities.

Another misconception about assisted living is that you will have to give up your privacy.  At our community, residents have a choice of spacious private suites in a variety of floorplans with their own separate entrance.  Each suite is ready to move into and just needs your furnishings and personal items.

Also did you know that many of today’s communities including ours are pet friendly?  We recognize that for many seniors, their pet is a part of their family, and it is essential to their wellbeing to bring that member along with them as they transition to their new home.

People sometimes worry that moving into an assisted living home may further remove them from the comfort and security of knowing their family’s help is not far away.  At MorningStar, you no long need to worry about the risks of living alone.  We offer the comfort and security of 24/7 care so that if you need assistance in the middle of the night, someone is right there to help.

Please visit MorningStar at Jordan’s website to learn more about our loving community.  We offer 55 assisted living suites in spacious studio and one- and two-bedroom floor plans Within our Reflections Neighborhood, we have 29 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment.

Is Assisted Living the Best Choice for You or a Loved One?

September 30, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

You may be confused about whether assisted living is the best choice for you or your loved one.  While licensing requirements for assisted living communities vary by state, they generally provide care for individuals who do not require around-the-clock skilled nursing.  The National Center for Assisted Living defines assisted living as “part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”

Thus, assisted living communities are ideal for seniors who are mainly independent but need help with the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) such as dressing, bathing, and other personal care tasks.  They also provide daily meals and 24/7 care and can readily accommodate residents’ changing needs and preferences.  Most offer transportation and housekeeping services, which mean an assisted living home is perfect for aging in place.

Many communities provide wellness programs and activities that engage and support the residents’ intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual needs.  Furthermore, many encourage family members to get involved with the community’s activities and special events.

MorningStar at Jordan is an assisted living and memory care community in historic Centennial, CO, in the south-central area of Metro Denver.  Our luxury community offers 55 private assisted living suites and 29 secure memory care suites devoted to those with Alzheimer’s or dementia-related diseases.   We are located at Arapahoe and Jordan Roads, convenient to banks, hospitals, medical facilities, shopping, and restaurants.  Please visit our website to learn more.

MorningStar of Boulder Offers All-inclusive, Compassionate Memory Care

September 27, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

At MorningStar of Boulder, we understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.  We know the path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey.  MorningStar of Boulder offers assisted living as well as experienced, compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia right through to the most advanced stages.

Our memory care is in a separate area we call Reflections Neighborhood and consists of 46 secure suites.  The Reflections Neighborhood is specifically designed to allow residents the freedom to move safely about their spacious surroundings.  Also, given the nature of dementia, residents pay one price for their suite and their care regardless of the level of memory loss.

As dementia care experts, our unique approach and philosophy to caring for those afflicted with the disease is called “Lavender Sky.”  We know the essence of the person remains despite the level of memory loss, and our job is to nurture and support the individual by finding ways to calm or stimulate as the situation demands.  Lavender Sky provides the path for us to enter, embrace, and explore the “purple world” of memory loss, and to cross over the physical, emotional, and relational boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

Every aspect of our home is designed to provide the comfort, wellness and safety our special residents require including mealtime.  We know those suffering from memory loss can sometimes have compromised abilities at the table. We address this by providing a selection of finger foods, texture-modified diets (mechanical soft and puréed, thickened liquids), and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

MorningStar of Boulder invites area families to contact us for more information and availability and pricing.  To see firsthand our loving care, we encourage you to set up a tour of one of the finest senior retirement homes in Boulder.

MorningStar of Boulder offers the very best in senior retirement homes with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself our exceptional community.

MorningStar at Jordan’s Clinical Services Help Manage Health Conditions

September 26, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

If you are considering assisted living, and like many older adults suffer from a chronic health condition, MorningStar at Jordan is designed to help you better manage it.  We define health and well-being holistically, and as such, offer a range of services and programming that supports the whole person – body, mind and spirt.  Both our Enrichment Team and our Wellness Care Team play an important role in making our community the best choice of senior living residences in Centennial, CO.

We are pleased to offer assisted living residents the many benefits provided by our centralized, mobile Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.  This ensures an accurate record of assessments, care planning, incident tracking, wound care, behavior management and eMARs (electronic medication administration records). The MorningStar Family

September 23, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar Senior Living’s Founder and CEO, Ken Jaeger, first began forming the idea of starting a company from a desire to create senior living that was defined by the human touch.  He says his intention was to “re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.” This simple but profound concept has driven the overwhelming success of our MorningStar brand.  Now sixteen years later, MorningStar continues to add communities across the Western U.S., including MorningStar of Boulder Assisted Living and Memory Care.

At MorningStar of Boulder, our goal is to create a true home for our residents - one that feels like a family.  To help us achieve this, our dedicated team strives to live up to our unique mission statement, which includes honoring God in all of our business practices and relationships and valuing all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals.  The last part of our mission statement is to invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well, as we know our brand demands committed individuals who will use creative minds and compassionate hearts to serve our residents.

We also aspire to and nurture our core values of Love, Respect, Honesty, Fairness, Goodness, and Kindness to help us build our MorningStar family.  Last month we focused on “kindness” and thought about the many ways we could go out of our way to do something nice for someone. When we give an act of kindness, it gives us a rewarding feeling back, and motivates us to continue to be kind.

MorningStar at Jordan Offers Unparalleled Assisted Living & Memory Care

September 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

In case you wondered, not all assisted living communities are alike.  At MorningStar at Jordan, our care philosophy evolved from a unique and loving concept.  MorningStar Senior Living began when Ken Jaeger, our founder, set out to establish his own brand of exceptional senior living.

Ken’s dream was to start a senior housing company that was defined by the human touch.  He explains how he “wanted to re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”  From this distinct beginning, MorningStar was founded on the following three mission statements:

·         Honor God in our business practices and relationships — a commitment to strong moral values and ethics

·         Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals — a commitment to creating a community that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence

·         Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well — a commitment to hiring and retaining employees who use creative minds and compassionate hearts to serve residents

We back up our mission statement with a set of core values that include Love, Respect, Honesty, Fairness, Goodness, and Kindness. These values guide us in day-to-day life as well as in the way we dispense care to each resident.  Along with our mission to serve seniors, we support local causes such as the Alzheimer’s Association as well as other global issues.

So what does all this mean for our assisted living and memory care residents?  MorningStar at Jordan is dedicated to providing compassionate, loving care that enhances our residents’ lives.  We are proud to have a team of individuals with a felt calling to serve, and who consider seniors to be heroes.  Each staff member is the type of person who does the right things even when no one is watching and willingly goes the extra mile to assist our residents.  Please visit our website to learn about pricing and availability or to set up a tour to see our exceptional assisted living home.

Study Shows Blood Pressure Drugs May Lower Risk of Dementia

September 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Recently a large study out of Europe found a link between older adults who take blood pressure-lowering drugs and a lower risk of developing dementia.  Medical News Today explains that while researchers are still unclear as to what causes dementia, much work is being done to improve prevention strategies.  By studying “potential risk factors that may contribute to the development of this condition,” scientists say they hope to learn more about connections between certain health conditions and higher rates of dementia.

Another study published last year in the journal, Neurology, found that patients with hypertension had a higher risk of experiencing brain lesions related to dementia.  In this newest study from the University of Leipzig in Germany, the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France, and the Frankfurt, Germany branch of IQVIA, researchers had access to a large database that collects and stores health information on millions of people.

Using the Disease Analyzer database, researchers looked at 12,405 people, aged 60 and older, with or without dementia.  They compared those who took antihypertensive drugs with those who had for periods of time or had never taken the drugs.  Results showed that those who took “certain antihypertensive drugs — including beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and angiotensin II receptor blockers — seemed to have a lower risk of dementia.”

The study authors warn that antihypertensive drugs do not guarantee a person will not develop dementia.  They say rather it highlights the benefits of such drugs.

At MorningStar of Boulder assisted living and memory care community, we offer comprehensive care services including 24-hour care managers, medication care managers, routine Health & Wellness Evaluations, and much more.  Please visit our website to learn more about the area’s finest senior retirement living.
