Making Your Assisted Living Suite into a Comfortable Home

November 19, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

We all know that life changes can be fraught with anxiety and fear and moving into assisted living is certainly a major change for many seniors.  However, experts say there are several things families can do to help ease the transition period.

One of those things is to help your loved one make a comfortable home in their new suite.  Julia Bailey, a senior associate and interior design project manager with Denver-based OZ Architecture, explains that, "Moving into assisted living often can feel like a loss of independence and privacy for your loved one, but thoughtful interior design can go a long way toward improving happiness and well-being for the resident, as well as improving overall functionality of the new living space."

Ms. Bailey cautions that you need to remember to let your loved one have a say in how their new home will be decorated including the personal mementos and photos they want to bring with them and which ones they want to display.  Trigging happy memories with sentimental items is a big step toward making their new place a real home. Also accent pillows and pictures are an easy way to add a lot of color and attractiveness to their place.

Please keep in mind safety concerns when placing furniture and avoid using area rugs that can become trip hazards or overcrowding a room and not leaving enough space to easily navigate.  Install hand rails where needed and make sure there is easily accessible lighting in the bathrooms and hallways if the person is getting up at night.

Helping your loved stay organized can improve the home’s safety as well as the aesthetic.  Consider any mobility issues the person may have and make sure frequently used items are within easy reach on a shelf.  Chairs and sofas should be firm and stable.

At MorningStar of Boulder, we have 48 private bright suites for assisted living and another 46 secure suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.    We are committed to provide the best senior retirement living in the area, and invite you to set up a tour to see our exceptional community.

Learn More About Assisted Living Communities

November 16, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Too many older adults do not have a true picture of what senior living is all about.  They still think senior living communities are like the nursing homes their elderly relatives had been “sent to” years ago once they could no longer care for themselves, and considered them to be depressing places.  Since these misconceptions are from people who have not visited one of today’s modern, vibrant communities, they do not understand that nothing could be farther from the truth.

In the case of assisted living communities, residents typically are able to lead a more independent lifestyle than many elderly adults who live alone as they have access to assistance whenever they need it.   Others worry an assisted living home may be too expensive. However, the truth is that once you factor in your current living expenses (including the costs of home repairs and maintenance) as well as the additional costs of paying for a variety of care services, assisted living is a lot less expensive than you thought.

Seniors also fear an assisted living community may not offer enough to keep them feeling productive and engaged.  Again nothing could be farther from the truth.  At MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan, we offer a whole host of resort-style amenities and services along with meaningful programs and activities. As a resident, you benefit from social interactions, physical activities geared toward your fitness level, and programs designed to stimulate your mind.

Furthermore, assisted living gives a resident’s family peace of mind knowing help is close at hand whenever it is needed.  Families are also comforted by the fact their loved one is getting nutritional meals that are not only good for them but delicious tasting.  MorningStar at Jordan invites Centennial, CO area families to set up a tour to see why our residents are proud to call us “home.”

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living home in the area.

Many Seniors Prefer a Community Lifestyle Over Living Alone

November 12, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Several studies have shown that the majority of seniors who move into senior living residences say they prefer it to living alone.  A Place for Mom reports that “while many seniors want to age at home as long as they can, research shows that senior living communities may be the healthier option; especially after a spouse passes away.”  Also seniors are often unaware of the wide range of services and amenities available at an independent or assisted living community.

When a senior lives alone, they can become pretty isolated especially if they have stopped driving.  In addition, trying to maintain a house can be difficult for aging adults.  Housekeeping chores, preparing meals, and going up and down stairs can be challenging for the elderly.  Another problem faced by seniors who live alone is a fear of falling.  Having no one around to help in the case of an emergency can be scary as well as life-threatening.

Senior living communities such as MorningStar at Jordan provide creative programs and activities that encourage and enhance health and wellness, socialization, and mental stimulation.  At MorningStar we also provide scheduled transportation as well as arrange special outings to local destinations such as museums, parks, plays, shopping malls and scenic drives.  Residents at our assisted living and memory care community will no longer have to worry about fixing meals as we provide three daily meals that are both healthy and delicious.

MorningStar at Jordan offers 55 private assisted living suites with the choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  In our memory care neighborhood, we have 29 secure suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Please contact us to learn about the many benefits we offer to those in need of assisted living or memory care.

MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan represents the very best in senior living residences with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We are dedicated to providing a true home for residents amidst a beautiful, serene setting by creating a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Want to Learn More about Servant-minded, Purpose-driven Leadership?

November 12, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

The MorningStar Senior Living Company, made-up of a group of servant-minded leaders with a felt calling to serve, is currently seeking extraordinary individuals to fill a variety of assisted living jobs at our Denver area communities.  While education and experience requirements are diverse, one of the first things we look for are people with big hearts as they the kind of individuals who will help us create the ideal environment for our residents.

Many of us know that the most important thing we can do is to lend a hand to a person in need.  In fact throughout time, philosophers and religious leaders alike have lauded the benefits of helping others as a way to lead a purposeful life.  As a famous Chinese proverb says: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap.  If you want happiness for a day, go fishing.  If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune.  If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”

Research even provides anecdotal evidence to support the fact that giving is a powerful pathway to personal growth and lasting happiness.  Moreover many of us believe that it is not only how much we give, but whether it is given with love.

The assisted living jobs at our Denver homes include a variety of positions from care managers and medication care managers/QMAPs to directors, cooks, drivers and servers as well as housekeeping jobs.  Our jobs are both full and part-time, and as we are an around-the-clock operation, we also have evening, night, and weekend shifts.

Denver’s highly respected MorningStar communities provide independent living, assisted living and memory care.  Each is beautifully designed and loaded with all of the amenities and services needed to give our cherished residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Please visit MorningStar’s Career page for a link to “Assisted Living Jobs – Denver.”

At MorningStar Senior Living, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  We are committed to a foundation built upon honoring God and valuing all seniors, and are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve seniors.  Please visit MorningStar’s website for details on assisted living including housekeeping jobs in Denver.

If You Haven’t Already – It’s Time to Get Your Flu Shot

November 10, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Along with fall’s changing leaves and cooler temperatures, it also signals the start of the flu season, which means it’s time to get your annual flu shot.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older gets a seasonal flu vaccine each year with rare exception.  They recommend “that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. Getting vaccinated later, however, can still be beneficial and vaccination should continue to be offered throughout the flu season, even into January or later.”

The flu season begins to increase in October, and typically peaks between December and February but can last as late as May.  Also, as it takes about two weeks after your vaccination for the protective antibodies to develop, it is important to get it early in the season. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the various viruses that are in the vaccine.

The CDC stresses it is especially important for people 65 years and older to get a flu shot as they are at greater risk for serious complications that can result in hospitalization and, in some cases, even death.   This is because seniors’ immune systems are generally weaker than those of younger adults.  Complications of flu can include: bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.  The CDC also recommends people 65 years and older get a flu shot approved for their age group and not a nasal spray vaccine.

Additionally, you need to know that last year’s flu shot will not protect you from this season’s flu virus.  Not only has your immunity from last year’s shot started to wane, but each year the viruses change so you need the protection of the new antibodies.  The flu shot you receive this year has been designed to protect against the flu viruses that researcher have determined will be the most common in the 2019- 2020 flu season.

Gift Ideas for Seniors

October 30, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

With the holiday season fast approaching, many of us are stumped as to what to buy for an elderly parent and other senior loved ones.  Experts suggest you keep in mind they most likely they do not need a lot of “things” but would appreciate something that helps to make their lives easier and/or more enjoyable.

In fact, do not limit yourself to the idea that gifts have to be something new.  Many seniors enjoy getting out and taking them to an activity they love such as a sport’s game (maybe a game of their grandchild’s), a play, or concert is quality time spent together.  Another idea is to give them a series of gift certificates for a year’s worth of monthly dinners out with you or for things like haircuts, manicures, a spa day with massage, or even ride services.

As many elderly adults get cold easily, a comfy, soft throw blanket makes for a good gift.  Another thoughtful gift especially for someone with Alzheimer’s disease is a customized photo blanket.  They can be ordered through several large retailers and are not too expensive.  If your parent is a music lover, expand their collection with popular songs from their younger days, and if they don’t already have one, buy them a portable boom box that is easy to use.

Another gift idea is to get them a phone or simplified tablet that will let them facetime, enjoy family photos, and browse the Internet.  Gift baskets filled with favorite foods or new soaps and lotions, non-skid soled slippers or compression socks also are appreciated by seniors.  Other ideas include large-print playing cards, puzzles, and adult coloring books with a new set of markers are also fun gifts for seniors.

If you are looking for senior living residences in the Centennial, CO area, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Jordan.  We are committed to provide our assisted living and memory care residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community second to none. Please visit our website to learn more.

Seniors Benefit from Strength Training

October 21, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Think you are too old to pump iron?  Research shows that for the majority of seniors who still do exercise, their regimen only includes aerobic exercises such as walking, biking, jogging or swimming.  While these types of exercises are important to our overall health, an article published by the U.S. News & World Report explains why seniors can benefit from strength training.  They state that fitness professionals as well as healthcare providers report everyone from 18 to 80 needs to do both cardiovascular and strengthening exercises.

Research suggests that the benefits go beyond just building better tone and an improved shape as studies link “not just aerobic exercise but strength training with a reduced risk of death from all causes.”  This is why the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommends that even older adults follow their guidelines and do some level of strength training at least two days a week.  As Dr. Jennifer Kraschnewski, an associate professor of medicine, pediatrics and public health sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine points out “ very good evidence [is available] to show that 80-year-olds are just as able to improve their muscle mass as 50-year-olds. And this can be done reliably over a very short period of time – something as short as two to three months."

At MorningStar at Jordan, we provide quality, all-encompassing senior living with our range of wellness programs and activities that support and engage our residents including physical activities designed for all levels of fitness.  One look at our monthly calendar and you will see a variety of exercise classes available daily along with many other entertaining and meaningful programs.   Please visit our website to learn about our unique and loving assisted living home.

Most Elderly Adults Have Hearing Loss

October 18, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Commucation Disorders (NIDCD) about one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those 75 and older have difficultly hearing.  This can make it hard for seniors to “understand and follow a doctor's advice, to respond to warnings, and to hear doorbells and alarms.”  Difficultly hearing also makes it hard for many elderly people to follow and engage in conversation with their family and friends.

Known as presbycusis, hearing loss in seniors generally occurs gradually and initially affects the ability to hear higher pitched sounds.  The person may notices that while the speech is loud enough, it sounds as if the talker is mumbling. The condition is commonly caused by the loss of nerve hair cells in the Cochlea or the deterioration of other parts of the inner ear or auditory nerves.   Age-related hearing loss typically affect both ears equally.

In some cases, health conditions more common among the elderly such as high blood pressure and diabetes can additionally affect hearing.  Furthermore, certain medications including some types of chemotherapy drugs can cause hearing loss.

The NIDCD has a checklist to help seniors determine if they are experiencing hearing problems.  Questions include: Do you feel frustrated when talking to members of your family because you have difficulty hearing them?; Do you have difficulty hearing when someone speaks in a whisper?; and Do you feel restricted or limited by a hearing problem?

Another cause of hearing loss can be the result of long-term exposure to loud noise and is one of the most common occupational hazards.  The exposure damages the sensory hair cells in the ears, which do not grow back. It is estimated that at least 10 million Americans have irreversible hearing loss due to long-term exposure to noise.

Seniors should discuss any hearing problems with their health care provider who will refer them to an otolaryngologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, throat, and neck.  The otolarynogogist will test your hearing, and if a problem is found, will refer you on to an audiologist who will determine the type and degree of hearing loss. Either they or a hearing aid specialist will fit you for a hearing aid.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Making Assisted Living More Affordable

October 16, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar at Jordan is a graciously appointed assisted living home located in historic Centennial in the south-central area of Metro Denver.  We proudly offer 55 private assisted living suites as well as 29 secure suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

For residents in assisted living, your monthly fee is based on the size of the suite, location within the building and view, and your level of care (we offer 5 levels) as determined by a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director.  The fee for memory care residents is all-inclusive (suite and care) and is one packaged price.

To help families find ways to make assisted living more affordable, we provide information on a variety of innovative financial options and other often under-used benefits.  One such example is to make veterans aware of the “Aid & Attendance” pension benefit.  We refer them to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs where they can find out if they qualify.

Another resource to help pay for assisted living is Long-term Care insurance.  To see what expenses, and/or up to what amounts, will be covered under your policy, review your Benefits Summary section to learn about the specifics of coverage, daily benefit, policy limit, and elimination period.

Many people also overlook life insurance policies as a source for funds.  However, in some cases, whole life and universal life policies can be used to raise funds through cash surrender, death benefit loans and other means.  We recommend consulting your accountant or tax advisor for information on any tax liabilities you may incur.

Please visit our website to learn about pricing and availability or to set up a tour to see our exceptional senior living community.  We look forward to meeting potential residents and their families.

How Much Do You Know About Today’s Assisted Living Communities?

October 12, 2019 by MorningStar Senior Living

Many people think they already know everything there is to know about senior living communities – “a place where old people go to die.”  This could not be further from the truth.  As the largest assisted living referral service, a Place for Mom explains, “senior assisted living is a viable option that can enhance your quality of life by empowering you to live that life the way you want to.”  Today’s vibrant communities include independent living for active seniors, assisted living for those needing help with personal daily care activities, and memory care.

In fact, assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Jordan are specifically designed to give aging adults the opportunity to maintain their independence while providing access to the assistance they need.  In addition, they get the benefit of built-in companionship as well as a range of meaningful wellness programs and activities.

Another misconception about assisted living is that you will have to give up your privacy.  At our community, residents have a choice of spacious private suites in a variety of floorplans with their own separate entrance.  Each suite is ready to move into and just needs your furnishings and personal items.

Also did you know that many of today’s communities including ours are pet friendly?  We recognize that for many seniors, their pet is a part of their family, and it is essential to their wellbeing to bring that member along with them as they transition to their new home.

People sometimes worry that moving into an assisted living home may further remove them from the comfort and security of knowing their family’s help is not far away.  At MorningStar, you no long need to worry about the risks of living alone.  We offer the comfort and security of 24/7 care so that if you need assistance in the middle of the night, someone is right there to help.

Please visit MorningStar at Jordan’s website to learn more about our loving community.  We offer 55 assisted living suites in spacious studio and one- and two-bedroom floor plans Within our Reflections Neighborhood, we have 29 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment.
