Radishes for Heart Health: Why They’re a Must in Your Diet

April 16, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

When it comes to heart-healthy foods, radishes don’t always get the spotlight—but they should! These colorful root vegetables are packed with nutrients that support cardiovascular health, improve circulation, and help regulate blood pressure. Plus, they’re crisp, refreshing, and easy to add to meals in memory care.

Radishes Help Regulate Blood Pressure

One of the biggest risk factors for heart disease is high blood pressure. Radishes are rich in potassium, a mineral that helps relax blood vessels and keep blood pressure at a healthy level.

  • Potassium balances sodium levels, preventing spikes in blood pressure.

  • Nitrates in radishes improve circulation, helping the heart pump more efficiently.

  • Natural diuretic properties help flush out excess fluids, reducing strain on the cardiovascular system.

Adding potassium-rich foods in assisted living communities like radishes to your diet can support long-term heart health.

Antioxidants That Protect the Heart

Radishes contain powerful antioxidants like anthocyanins and vitamin C, which help reduce inflammation and protect blood vessels. These antioxidants:

  • Prevent oxidative stress, which damages cells and accelerates aging.

  • Support artery health, reducing the risk of plaque buildup.

  • Boost collagen production, keeping blood vessels flexible and strong.

A Natural Way to Lower Cholesterol

High cholesterol levels can increase the risk of heart disease, but radishes contain compounds that may help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) while increasing good cholesterol (HDL).

  • Fiber in radishes binds to cholesterol, helping remove it from the body.

  • Sulfur compounds improve liver function, aiding in cholesterol breakdown.

Radishes and Blood Sugar Control

Heart disease and diabetes are closely linked, making blood sugar regulation a key factor in cardiovascular health. Radishes have a low glycemic index and contain compounds that:

  • Help regulate blood sugar levels, preventing spikes.

  • Increase insulin sensitivity, making it easier for the body to process glucose.

  • Reduce inflammation, which is often higher in people with diabetes.

For residents in assisted living, incorporating radishes into meals can be a simple and delicious way to support both heart and metabolic health.

How to Add More Radishes to Your Diet

Radishes aren’t just for salads—they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways:

  • Raw – Sliced thin and added to sandwiches, tacos, or grain bowls.

  • Roasted – Cooking radishes mellows their peppery bite and brings out a mild sweetness.

  • Pickled – A tangy, probiotic-rich addition to meals.

  • Blended into dips – Try adding radishes to hummus or yogurt-based dips for extra flavor.

Radishes are an easy and nutritious addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle. Whether enjoyed fresh, cooked, or pickled, they offer a natural way to support circulation, blood pressure, and overall cardiovascular health.

Why Vitamin C is Essential for Seniors’ Immune Health

April 14, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

Vitamin C has long been praised for its immune-boosting properties, but as we age, its role becomes even more important. This essential nutrient helps the body fight infections, heal wounds, and reduce inflammation. It also plays a key role in maintaining healthy skin, bones, and even cognitive function

How Vitamin C Supports the Immune System

The immune system naturally weakens with age, making it harder to fight off infections. Vitamin C strengthens the body’s defense by:

  • Encouraging the production of white blood cells, which fight infections.

  • Acting as a powerful antioxidant, reducing cell damage from free radicals.

  • Supporting faster wound healing, which is especially important for seniors.

Regular vitamin C intake has been linked to a reduced risk of colds, flu, and other infections—key concerns for residents in assisted living Centennial.

The Role of Vitamin C in Reducing Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is linked to many age-related health issues, including arthritis, heart disease, and cognitive decline. In memory care, Vitamin C helps:

  • Lower levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation.

  • Protect the body’s cells from oxidative stress, slowing the aging process.

  • Improve joint health by reducing inflammation-related stiffness and pain.

Best Food Sources of Vitamin C

While many people think of oranges when it comes to vitamin C, there are plenty of other great sources:

  • Citrus fruits: Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes

  • Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries

  • Bell peppers: Surprisingly, these contain more vitamin C than oranges

  • Leafy greens: Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard

  • Tomatoes and broccoli: Easy additions to meals that provide a vitamin C boost

Many residents in assisted living communities in Centennial, CO enjoy incorporating these foods into daily meals to naturally support their health.

Should Seniors Take Vitamin C Supplements?

For most people, getting vitamin C from food is ideal, but some may benefit from supplements, especially those who:

  • Have trouble absorbing nutrients due to digestive issues.

  • Have a restricted diet that lacks fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Need extra immune support during flu season.

It’s always best to talk to a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements to determine the right dosage.

Making Vitamin C a Daily Habit

Getting enough vitamin C doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple ways to include it in everyday life include:

  • Drinking a glass of orange juice with breakfast.

  • Adding bell peppers or tomatoes to sandwiches and salads.

  • Snacking on berries or citrus fruit.

Many of our residents prioritize vitamin C as part of their overall wellness routine, helping them stay strong, healthy, and ready to enjoy life to the fullest.

How Aging Affects Processing and Remembering New Information

April 04, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan, our beautiful home is designed to provide residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. Lifestyle Changes Can Reduce Type 2 Diabetes Risk

April 02, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes affects millions of Americans, and every year more than a million people are diagnosed with the disease. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reports in 2021, 38.4 million Americans, or 11.6% of the population, had diabetes. Of that number 2 million had type 1 diabetes, which includes more than 300,000 children and adolescents.

Seniors aged 65 years and older make up a large percentage of Americans with the disease at 29.2% or 16.5 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed). Diabetes can be deadly and was the 8th leading cause of death in 2021. People with diabetes are at an increased risk of vision problems, heart attacks, nerve damage and stroke. In 2022, the CDC estimated the cost of diabetes was $412.9 billion.

Prediabetes is another huge problem and numbers from 2021 report 97.6 million Americans aged 18 and older are affected. It is a chronic condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. While it carries an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, it isn’t inevitable. Studies show prediabetes can be reversed or the risk mitigated with lifestyle changes such as diet, medications, and early detection.

Yale Medicine endocrinologist, Anika Anam, MD, explains, “Prediabetes goes hand in hand with metabolic syndrome, the term for a condition that includes hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol.” She adds each of those conditions raises the risk for serious issues including heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

The CDC’s national Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), finds “people with prediabetes who lost a modest amount of weight—5 to 7% (10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds, for example)—with the help of a structured lifestyle-change program cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.” In addition, experts say at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day can not only improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels, but aid in weight loss. Cutting out added sugars, eating more complex carbs (vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains), and increasing protein are other recommended lifestyle changes as is reducing stress.

How to Layer Clothing for Maximum Warmth and Comfort

March 19, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

Staying warm during colder months doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or style. For seniors living in assisted living in Centennial, mastering the art of layering can keep you cozy and comfortable, whether you’re enjoying a brisk morning walk or relaxing indoors. Let’s explore how to layer effectively and make the most of your winter wardrobe.

The Basics of Layering

Layering is all about combining different clothing pieces to trap heat and keep cold air out.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

Base Layer: Stay Dry

The layer closest to your skin should wick away moisture to keep you dry. Look for lightweight fabrics like merino wool, silk, or moisture-wicking synthetics. Cotton isn’t ideal since it absorbs moisture, leaving you feeling damp and chilly.

Middle Layer: Stay Warm

This is your insulation layer, trapping body heat. Think fleece pullovers, down vests, or thicker sweaters. Choose breathable materials that keep you warm without making you overheat.

Outer Layer: Stay Protected

The outer layer shields you from wind, rain, or snow. Opt for water-resistant or waterproof jackets with hoods to keep you dry and comfortable outdoors.

4 Tips for Comfort and Mobility

1. Choose Lightweight Fabrics

  • Bulky clothes can be heavy and restrict movement. Instead, go for lightweight options like thermal tops and insulated jackets that provide warmth without the bulk.

2. Keep Extremities Covered

  • Heat escapes quickly from your head, hands, and feet. Wear a warm hat, gloves, and thick socks to retain body heat.

3. Don’t Forget Scarves

  • A cozy scarf can seal the gap between your jacket and neck, blocking out chilly drafts.

4. Layer Loosely

  • Tight layers can reduce circulation, making you feel colder. Make sure each layer fits comfortably over the other.

How to Adjust Layers Indoors

For residents in senior living, layering isn’t just for going outside—it’s also great for keeping comfortable indoors. Rooms can feel warmer or cooler depending on the time of day, so try these tricks:

  • Use a thin cardigan or shawl for easy on-and-off comfort.

  • Switch to breathable layers if you’re active inside, like during yoga or crafting sessions.

Simplifying Your Wardrobe

Layering doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how to build a versatile winter wardrobe:

  • Invest in Quality Basics: Durable thermal tops, fleece pullovers, and waterproof jackets are worth the cost.

  • Stick to Neutral Colors: Neutral tones make it easier to mix and match layers.

  • Use Accessories for Style: Hats, scarves, and gloves can add a pop of color and personality.

Warmth Meets Wellness

Staying warm in assisted living communities isn’t just about comfort—it’s also important for your health. In cold weather, the risk of illnesses like hypothermia increases, especially for seniors. Proper layering helps regulate your body temperature and reduces the risk of cold-related health issues.

Layering is more than a practical winter trick—it’s a way to stay active, safe, and stylish during the colder months. With the right approach, you’ll be prepared for any weather while enjoying your daily routines.

Consult Your Physician if You Have Concerns About Memory Loss

March 05, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that anyone worried about memory loss make an appointment with their health care provider.  While we all know it is scary just thinking about the possibility of having Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the Alzheimer’s Association has a list of reasons why it is to your advantage to know.

The process for getting a diagnosis starts with a full evaluation with a healthcare provider that includes your medical history and any medications you are taking as well as a series of mental status tests.  If the initial evaluation indicates problems, your doctor will recommend further physical and neurological exams, diagnostic tests and brain imaging.

The top reason to be evaluated for Alzheimer’s is an early diagnosis gives you a better chance of benefiting from treatment.  If it is determined you have Alzheimer’s, experts explain that while there is no cure for the disease, there are medications that “demonstrate removing beta-amyloid, one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease, from the brain reduces cognitive and functional decline in people living with early Alzheimer’s.”  Other treatment options can lessen the symptoms, including memory loss and confusion, for a limited time.

An early diagnosis also means you may be eligible for clinical trials that could provide some medical benefit.  In addition, recent research suggests that certain lifestyle changes such as “controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking, participating in exercise, and staying mentally and socially active, may help preserve cognitive function.”

Another important consideration is the additional time an earlier diagnosis will give you to plan for your future and to do things now, rather than wait.  Planning for the future also helps family members know what your wishes are and prevents future feelings of guilt or arguments over your care.  The Alzheimer’s Association adds that an early diagnosis can save your family and the U.S. Government money spent on care.

Choosing an Assisted Living Community

March 03, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

For anyone considering a move to assisted living, choosing the right community is a big decision for families as getting it wrong may mean another move within a couple of months. To help, senior living experts say the first thing to do is to think about the level of care you or a loved one needs to improve quality of life.

After you have a good idea of what your needs are, now factor in things like location and affordability. If you want the home to be a convenient drive for easy visiting, concentrate on those communities. If mom or dad no longer drives, look for a community offering transportation for doctor appointments or errands; or if they plan to bring a car, does it offer parking? Does the home offer 24/7 care, medication management and access to licensed nurses?

Obviously, affordability is an important consideration, but senior living advocates warn don’t be initially shocked at the price. Rather think about all the living costs such as property taxes, maintenance, utility bills and meals included in the home’s monthly fees. For a better understanding of mom or dad’s assets, it may be worth your while to consult an expert in elder financial consulting. They can explore various options such as eligibility for Veterans’ benefits, what your parent’s long-term care insurance may cover, and the advantages of leveraging real estate assets and life insurance, tax benefits and more.

Other things to think about include the physical characteristics of the community. Does it offer a floor plan that works for you? Do you want amenities such as a fitness center, hair salon, outdoor patio, restaurant-style dining, theater, Wi-Fi, etc.?

If you are considering assisted living communities in Boulder, Colorado, we encourage you to learn more MorningStar. Virtual Fitness Programs in Assisted Living: Staying Active from Anywhere

February 14, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Staying active is essential for seniors, but not everyone feels comfortable heading to a gym or braving the outdoors. That’s where virtual fitness programs come in. For residents in assisted living, these programs make it easy to stay healthy and active right from the comfort of home—or even the community’s activity room.

The Rise of Virtual Fitness

Virtual fitness programs have grown in popularity over the past few years, offering seniors access to a world of exercise options at their fingertips. These programs combine technology with expert guidance, allowing participants to follow along with classes through a tablet, laptop, or TV screen.

Here’s why they’re such a hit:

  • Convenience: No need to leave the house or coordinate transportation. Just log in and get moving.

  • Variety: From chair yoga to tai chi, there’s something for everyone, no matter your fitness level.

  • Personalized Pacing: You can pause or replay sessions to match your comfort and ability.

Popular Classes for Seniors

Virtual fitness programs cater to all kinds of interests and abilities:

  • Chair Yoga: Perfect for improving flexibility and reducing stress without heavy movement.

  • Low-Impact Cardio: Fun, easy-to-follow routines that get your heart rate up without being overwhelming.

  • Strength Training: Use light weights or resistance bands to build muscle safely.

  • Dance Classes: Think Zumba Gold or line dancing—great for coordination and a little fun!

Technology Made Simple

Worried about the tech side? Virtual fitness is designed to be user-friendly. Most programs offer step-by-step guides to help you log in and get started. Many senior living communities even have staff or volunteers who can help residents navigate the technology.

Tips for Getting Started

  • Choose the Right Program: Look for classes tailored to seniors, with clear instructions and low-impact options.

  • Set Up Your Space: Clear an area where you can move safely, and keep water and a chair nearby.

  • Join a Group: Many communities offer group sessions where residents can do virtual classes together for extra motivation.

Virtual fitness programs in assisted living communities in Centennial prove that staying active doesn’t have to mean leaving home. With a little curiosity and a good internet connection, seniors can enjoy the benefits of movement from anywhere, no matter the season.

Reduce Your Risk of Arthritis With Healthy Habits

February 10, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

Many people assume arthritis comes with aging, but experts say that while joint pain is common in older adults, arthritis is not a normal part of aging. The CDC explains arthritis is a group of more than 100 conditions causing inflammation and swelling in the joints or nearby tissues with symptoms such as pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and mostly occurs in older adults (about 70% are 55 years and older). Other common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

While there is not a cure for arthritis, there are treatments, medications and therapies. In addition, studies find healthy lifestyle habits can help manage symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout as well as lessen your risk for even getting it. For example, the CDC reports 40% of people with arthritis can decrease pain and improve function by being physically active.

Osteoarthritis is the breakdown of the cartilage of the joints causing bones to rub against one another resulting in pain and difficulty moving the joint.  Experts say millions of cases could be prevented by avoiding excessive weight gain. Exercising regularly and doing resistance training is another way to avoid injury to the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic condition causing inflammation and swelling in joints. It can misshape, misalign and damage joints; and if it is in one knee or hand, it is typically on the other hand or knee. Recommendations to reduce your risk for RA include avoiding tobacco. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is linked to several health conditions including RA; and prevention includes improving oral health with good hygiene and dental visits.

Gout is another common form of arthritis and occurs when crystals of uric acid are deposited in one or more joints. People with gout experience pain, swelling and redness in the affected joints. Experts say eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol, and staying well hydrated are good steps to reduce your risk. If you are overweight, lose weight and if possible avoid diuretics (discuss all medication changes with your doctor). Studies show that regardless of what type of arthritis you have, early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in your future joint health.

The Safe Use of Medications

February 05, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

It may surprise you to know according to the Department of Health and Human Services, fifty-five percent of seniors are non-compliant with prescription drug orders and do not take medication as prescribed by their doctors. It is a serious problem as approximately 200,000 older adults are hospitalized annually due to adverse drug reactions.

Medical professionals say there are steps seniors and those who care for an elderly loved one can do to help lessen the problem. To start with, take medications as prescribed including the correct dosage and time, with or without food, and never crush a pill into a powder. Especially if you see multiple doctors, be sure to always bring a list and dosage of all medications you are taking including non-prescription and herbal supplements.

Experts say using the same pharmacy can help reduce drug interactions, and to be sure to read the warnings regarding adverse reactions. Periodically review your prescriptions with your doctors to make sure you are taking the right dosage and still need the medications. To see if any meds you take have a warning for usage in the elderly, check the American Geriatric Society’s Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults. It is also recommended you properly dispose of older medications and drugs you no longer take.

If you are on medications to treat diabetes or high blood pressure, you need to continue to test your glucose level and BP numbers. Other drugs may be prescribed with the understanding you will have your blood tested periodically and it is important to follow through as too high or too low of a dosage can cause problems.

Tasty and Nutritious Foods to Improve Your Health

January 20, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in dementia care

When dieting, it is best to shy away from fried foods, foods loaded with empty carbs and sugary foods. Dieticians say that still leaves a lot of tasty food we can eat without feeling guilty. At the top of the list are non-starchy vegetables of which there are many ways to prepare them to ensure they are both satisfying and tasty.

If vegetables aren’t your favorite food, it may be you are not creative enough in preparing them. A simple suggestion is to give your veggies a quick spray of olive oil, add seasoning and a few cloves of garlic. Either roast or air fry to give them a punch of flavor. If you love dips, think about switching up from heavy-caloric dips to ones using salsa or low-fat yogurt.

A list of veggies nutrient-dense and light in calories includes broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, sprouts and kale. If you want fruits, the best to eat are watermelon and cantaloupe, most berries and kiwi. Beata Rydyger, a registered nutritionist based in Los Angeles, says “Along with these foods being beneficial for weight maintenance and weight loss, they are very high in macronutrients such as carbohydrates and micronutrients including vitamins and minerals.” Moreover, these foods are rich in fiber, and fiber keeps blood sugar levels stable and keeps you feeling fuller longer.

Other foods that fill you up are nuts and seeds. While they are higher in calories than fruits and veggies, a handful contains protein as well as vitamins and minerals. Snacking mid-afternoon on a cup of low-fat cottage cheese, hard-boiled egg or cup of tuna helps ensure you won’t overeat at dinner time. Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking a glass of water or bone broth before a meal can help reduce the amount you eat during the meal. However, dieticians say when making any dietary changes, you should start slowly and work with your healthcare provider.

If you are considering dementia care in the Denver area, MorningStar at Jordan may be the place for you. We provide residents a carefree lifestyle to help live life to the fullest. Muscle Loss in Older Adults

January 17, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

The term sarcopenia refers to age-related muscle loss and is a natural part of growing older. However, it also may occur at a faster pace after prolonged periods of inactivity from injury, illness or the pain of osteoarthritis. Sarcopenia causes muscle atrophy and brings on problems such as poor balance and greater weakness, which in turn, can result in more inactivity and increased risks for falls.

Seniors with muscle atrophy may have difficulty reaching their arms upward, opening jars, typing on a keyboard or even tying shoes.  The Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine reports on a study that found “older men who did eight weeks of strength training lost about 25% of their muscle gains after they stopped training for two weeks.”

Jodi Klein, a physical therapist with Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, suggests a few things you can do if you know you have a surgical procedure ahead of you that could cause muscle atrophy. She says if you are currently active, keep it up; if not, use this time to get started.  Klein explains, “The better shape you are in going into surgery, the better shape you will be coming out, and the less chance you have of enduring muscle loss.”

Older adults who want to regain muscle strength should talk to their health care provider about the best methods. Experts recommend an exercise routine that builds both upper and lower body strength. This could include weight training with dumbbells and resistance bands in conjunction with walking, swimming, and biking. If it would be helpful, think about turning to an expert to aid you in regaining strength.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan, we provide older adults carefree retirement years with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Beautifully designed to meet our residents’ every need, MorningStar offers a range of programs and activities to engage and support physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being.  Please visit our website to learn what sets us apart from other assisted living communities and why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

How Do Patients Feel About AI Generated Medical Advice?

January 15, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

The Harvard Medical School published an article discussing how patients rated AI’s information next to real doctors’ advice in terms of empathy. Following up on findings from the ChatGPT survey showing AI to be more empathetic to patients, the author, Robert H. Shmerling, MD, Senior Faculty Editor, Harvard Health Publishing; Editorial Advisory Board Member, Harvard Health Publishing, says there is most likely more to consider. Currently AI does tasks such as “drafting doctor’s notes, suggesting diagnoses; helping to read x-rays and MRI scans; and monitoring real-time health data including heart rate or oxygen level.”

Shmerling points out while AI’s surveyed responses were longer than the doctors, there is more to it than the “amount” relayed to patients’ including how accurate and up to date the information is. Another thing to consider is the answers AI provided were not tested for fabrication. Therefore, experts advise it is probably premature to rely on AI answers to patients’ questions without solid proof of their accuracy and actual supervision by healthcare providers.

A University of Arizona Health Sciences’ AI study reports more than half of its participants didn’t fully trust AI-powered medical advice, but many more put faith in AI if it’s monitored and guided by human touch. The National Institutes of Health funded study gave participants mock medical conditions and asked if they would prefer to have an AI system or a physical doctor handle their diagnosis and treatment, and under what circumstances. The study’s lead author, Marvin J. Slepian, MD, JD, Regents Professor of Medicine at the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson and member of the BIO5 Institute, explains the study has importance for both future and current medical decisions. However, he says, “The onus will be on physicians and others in health care to ensure that information that resides in AI systems is accurate, and to continue to maintain and enhance the accuracy of AI systems as they will play an increasing role in the future of health care.”

Choosing the Right Assisted Living Community

December 09, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

For anyone considering a move to assisted living, choosing the right community is a big decision for families as getting it wrong may mean another move within a couple of months. To help, senior living experts say the first thing to do is to think about the level of care you or a loved one needs to improve quality of life.

After you have a good idea of what your needs are, now factor in things like location and affordability. If mom or dad needs help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) focus only on assisted living communities.

Other things to consider include the physical characteristics of the community. Does it offer a floor plan that works for you? Do you want amenities such as a fitness center, hair salon, outdoor patio, restaurant-style dining, theater, Wi-Fi, etc.?

For outstanding assisted living communities in Centennial, Colorado, we encourage you to learn more MorningStar at Jordan. MorningStar of Boulder Welcomes Couples

December 06, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

When a couple’s health experiences are different, and one is healthier than the other, that person may assume the role of caregiver. As time evolves, the needs of the chronically ill spouse may become more complex and require daily care. This can be difficult for the healthier spouse, and even impact his/her own health and well-being.

To ensure both parties have an opportunity for the best quality of life; an assisted living community may be the answer. While leaving a family home and transitioning to community life is a big change, the transition is easier for the person with a spouse or partner by their side. Marissa Kirby, NHA, CHC, CHPC, and vice president of compliance at NEWGEN HEALTH, LLC, explains, “In many cases, particularly when a couple has been married for many years, the ability to live together can make or break their decision on whether or not to move to an assisted living facility.”

Many assisted living communities like MorningStar of Boulder welcome couples; where we not only expertly and compassionately address the needs of a person living with a chronic illness or disability but also the needs of the healthier spouse. MorningStar’s assisted living provides the maintenance-free environment of independent living with the addition of care services for the ADLs (activities of daily living) tailored to the resident. We offer an array of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites. Each suite is equipped with a kitchenette, a handicapped-accessible bathroom, a 24-hour emergency call system, and a private heating & air conditioning system.  Your monthly fee includes cable TV and utilities, weekly housekeeping and laundry and linen services.  We do trash removal and spot cleaning daily.  Moreover, if you are wondering, we are pet friendly!

Senior-friendly activities, resort-style amenities and built-in companionship can be a winning combination for many couples. In addition to assisted living, our Reflections Neighborhood has suites devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. The Benefits of Assisted Living Communities

October 02, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

Many times, a move to assisted living is not only good for the senior but for the family as well. Mom or dad living alone, perhaps already experiencing a fall or another type of health emergency, is stressful for everybody involved.

Senior living experts point out the benefits of receiving attentive senior care along with services like nutritional meals, access to meaningful programs and transportation to and from appointments. At communities like MorningStar of Boulder, we sit down with in-coming residents to create a Personalized Service Plan designed to help with the ADLs (activities of daily living), which include bathing, grooming, transferring (such as from bed to a wheelchair), feeding and toileting.

Dee Pekruhn, director of life plan communities’ services and policy for LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, says, “Whether they stand alone or are part of a larger continuing care campus, assisted living communities offer a wide variety of community and social activities.” These typically include arts and crafts, physical exercise classes such as chair yoga, live concerts and other entertainment, and educational and technology classes. At MorningStar, we tell our residents if we don’t already have a class addressing one of your interests, to start one.

Special outings and trips are another component of many senior living communities including MorningStar of Boulder. Bus trips to local points of interest, shopping or cultural events are just some of the activities enjoyed by residents.

Another important service is medication management as statistics show the average older adult takes four or more prescription drugs each day, and as high as 36 percent of seniors take five or more. Medical management ensures seniors take the proper medication they need when they need it.

MorningStar of Boulder is proud to offer exceptional assisted living with our distinct mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest.”  Our community offers 48 private assisted living suites and 46 memory care suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Assisted Living Offers Support to Enhance Your Independence

September 13, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

For many families, assisted living is a new concept and they don’t know if it would meet their loved one’s needs. While services may depend on where you live, there are similarities regardless of your zip code. The first thing families should understand is assisted living is not skilled nursing care but rather intended for seniors who require a “helping hand” with daily care activities. Seniors need to understand it does not take away their independence but rather enhances it.

Assisted living communities offer an environment to safely age in place while receiving an array of senior care services, companionship and programs to improve quality of life. Residents enjoy not having to worry about home maintenance and yard work as well as preparing meals and driving. They are maintenance-free and provide meals and scheduled transportation to medical appointments or trips to area shopping and restaurants.

Another big benefit to assisted living is the resident no longer feels like a burden to their family. Now when a son or daughter comes for a visit, it is just that. There isn’t a list of chores to do or the need to help with personal care or meal prep but time can be spent enjoying one another.

When you are searching for assisted living, one of the services listed should include help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). ADLs include things like medication management, bathing, dressing, grooming, transference (help getting in and out of bed to wheelchair, walker etc.)  As an incoming resident, your loved one’s level of care will be based on the ADLs to create a Personalized Care Plan.

At MorningStar at Jordan, we provide a full range of senior care and hospitality services, luxury amenities and wellness programs to engage residents physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about our memory care in Centennial, Colorado.

Risk Factors for a Fall

September 09, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

Many of us have heard about or know a senior who has had a fall that led to a serious injury. Each year statistics report one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury; and approximately 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for a fall injury. Falls resulted in over 38,000 senior deaths in 2021.

The Harvard Medical School reports the highest risk factor for a fall is a previous fall. While a senior may have fallen or tripped and not thought much about it, as they only twisted an ankle or didn’t sustain a serious injury, the event may be a precursor to another fall.

There are things seniors can do to protect themselves from a fall and it starts by being aware of any risk factors you may have including vision and hearing problems, which can make a fall more likely. Experts say stiff joints can hamper your gait and balance and make it easier to fall, as do certain medications for blood pressure and antihistamines. As a deficiency in vitamin D decreases a person’s bone mineral density and strength of the bones, it too can cause instability and raise the risk for a fall. Experts report even something as unrelated as a head cold or the flu can cause dizziness and increase your risk.

To help boost core strength and improve balance, talk to your healthcare provider about the best type of exercises to do. Other steps to decrease the likelihood of a fall are to keep moving to loosen stiff joints and help build strength, wear sensible shoes and remove home hazards. Finally make sure your home has plenty of good lighting.

At MorningStar of Boulder, our community is designed to accommodate our residents’ every need and to see to their comfort as well as their safety.  Each of our suites is equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system and handicap-accessible bathroom. We also recognize the importance of exercising, and as such, provide a full calendar of activities that includes a variety of exercise programs.  Visit our website to see what sets our community apart from other assisted living communities and why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

Learn More About Arthritis

May 08, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living Community

In an article in Medical News Today experts discuss some of the common myths and facts regarding arthritis, a condition that causes pain and inflammation in joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the two main types of arthritis, and a national survey found nearly half of adults 65 years and older have been diagnosed with arthritis. OA, the most common form and leading cause of disability in older adults, is the result of cartilage between the bones in a joint wearing down.

Many people believe arthritis is only a disease of the elderly but RA, while not as common as OA, typically starts in individuals as young as 20 to 40 years old. People also mistakenly think if a joint hurts, it must be arthritis. Doctors say there are several reasons a person may experience pain in and around joints including old injuries, bursitis, and tendinitis.

Another myth is you shouldn’t exercise if you have arthritis; however, studies show exercise can actually help with range of motion and strength in the joint (consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or activity). The American College of Rheumatology says, “Exercise and arthritis can and should coexist. People with arthritis who exercise regularly have less pain, more energy, improved sleep, and better day-to-day function.”

Then there is the debate on whether heat is better than ice for sore joints. The Guy’s and St Thomas’s National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust in the UK, explains, “Used in the right way, heat can help reduce pain and stiffness in joints and muscles. Cold application can help reduce joint inflammation and swelling.” Moreover, experts say believing arthritis is unpreventable is only partially true as there are things people can do to mitigate risk or slow down the progression such as maintaining a healthy body weight.
